Let me ask you this then: Do you think Obama works hard?
Harder than most politicians, in that he's one of the most-watched people in the world and has to do his part of the process and all the responsibilities that go along with that. Most senators can go to a super market in jeans and a t-shirt and not even get recognized.
In comparison to your average white collar worker? Ehhhh. Probably not. As much as I loath admitting it, Obama does work hard, harder than most people (both blue collar and white collar), as he has a lot to juggle in his job. International affairs, peace treaties, domestic issues, Congress, his own administration, security, defense, and so on.
If anything, I think that the PotUS doesn't get paid enough for the amount of work he puts in.

Seriously, do you think that all a CEO does is play golf and attend cocktail parties?
Not at all, they put in a great deal of work.
Look, what I'm talking about is on a fundamental level where we're talking about things "in theory" and I readily admit that they're ideals not really achievable in any realistic sense. So let it go, okay? Just being a dreamer. The difference between me and the hippies is I realize and accept that, and keep going to work every day because the lights gotta stay on. Nothing in my lifetime is going to change, though I do hope some day the human race gets there.
I just know I'll be fertilizer one way or another by that time. ^^; We both know that this will keep popping up in conversations.
By Ramyrez 2015-05-07 08:07:11
Fair enough, I suppose. The thing about the PotUS is that it's as much balancing fame and stress as actual "work" like the rest of us in the white collar world do. It's almost sort of unfair to compare.
By Ramyrez 2015-05-07 08:09:32
We both know that this will keep popping up in conversations.
Yeah, well.
I've given strong thought to pulling a Fone and just ceasing to reply in a serious fashion in all but the rarest of circumstances.
Then again, we also both know I'm probably incapable of that.

Yeah, your passion in your viewpoints is almost as great as mine.
Probably greater, depending on the viewpoint.
But years of practice have made me the paragon of rational, calm responses you see daily.
That is to say, I don't express my displeasure with opposing viewpoints physically anymore.

In mudslinging news:
The Hill tries to tie Jeb Bush to porn industry
Quote: Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush is coming under scrutiny from social conservatives for investing taxpayer money in a company with ties to pornography.
The former Florida governor invested $1.3 million from the state’s pension fund into Movie Gallery, a film rental company that offers X-rated films in addition to comedies and action movies, according to a report in the International Business Times.
The report examined thousands of emails from during his tenure that show a strained relationship between Bush and the “religious right."
One voter wrote Bush was supporting a company that was “enslaving men and women to its addiction."
American Family Association founder Donald Wildmon, in particular, took offense to Bush’s ties to pornography. He wrote a mass email rallying social conservatives against Bush.
“Movie Gallery shades hundreds of its stores with ‘back rooms,’ filled with thousands of videos and magazines exhibiting morbid depictions of sex,” Wildmon reportedly said in the email. “By investing in Movie Gallery stock, the state of Florida is giving its stamp of approval on hard-core porn. Tell the Florida Board of Administration to get out of the porn business by divesting itself of Movie Gallery stock.”
Initially, Bush did not back down amid pressure, allegedly maintaining that he had to make the most profitable investment choice for taxpayers.
But in the state sold the shares in 2006 after Movie Gallery’s stock performance began to slip.
The revelations came from 280,000 emails recently released from Bush's time as governor.
So, media is trying to tie Bush to the porn industry by any means possible. Kara would be proud at the logical leaps this article makes.

So, media is trying to tie Bush to the porn industry by any means possible.
It's one of the most profitable, widely-accessed industries on the planet. Good for him if he got a piece of that. (Pun entirely intended.)
The problem here isn't anyone investing in the pornography industry, it's our country's continued backward, stunted, puritanical view of pornography.
Seriously. Is it a stretch to say that the large percentage of people who ally themselves with such "values" organizations are utter hypocrites? Pornography is so wildly consumed that whenever scientists try to do studies about the effects of it upon the human brain, they have problems finding enough test participants who haven't regularly viewed pornography.

I don't mind it, because I'm not forced to watch it. But there are too many people here in Texas that would disagree with me, I don't even bother with them anymore.

I like how you keep bringing up Infowars.com, like anyone besides Lordgrim has ever cited them as a source for anything, let alone any of the left of moderate posters. Fictionalized map in question, straight from infowars: Sorry, what were you saying again?
inb4 "satire" "rhetorical question" or "that's not what I said" deflection excuses that generally come up when I prove you wrong.
You didn't prove me wrong, the one having a fit over the map is the Texas rep, here I'll quote him again for you:
Quote: On Tuesday, Texas Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert also released a lengthy statement saying his office has been “inundated” with calls on the matter.
“This military practice has some concerned that the U.S. Army is preparing for modern-day martial law,” he said. “Certainly, I can understand these concerns.”
At the same time, Gohmert said he understands why military officials want to test whether Special Forces groups can move around a civilian population and handle various threat scenarios.
Gohmert explained that his concerns stem from the way the military is approaching the exercise. He cited a widely circulated map which details the seven states that are part of the exercise – California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Texas. The map has Utah and Texas colored red and labels them “hostile.” It labels other states as “permissive,” leaning hostile” and “leaning friendly.”
Gohmert said he was “rather appalled” that the “hostile” areas “have a Republican majority, ‘cling to their guns and religion,’ and believe in the sanctity of the United States Constitution.”

It may be more prevelant or "open" in the Bible-thumping areas of the country, however on a national stage everyone treats sex as this sort of elephant in the room. The vast majority of people have it and enjoy it. There's just so much religious stigma assigned it over the centuries that we collectively treat it as this terrible thing.
The sexual revolution wasn't so much a revolution as much as the very first battle in a war that's ongoing to this day.

Holy ***, I glazed over the fact it was public money.
They're mad he invested public money in porn?
They should be mad he invested public money in video rental stores, because they're straight-up dying 80s/90s businesses.
He should be investing the money directly into the porn industry if he wants a true return on investment. This isn't an attack on his state's morals, it's an attack on his state employees' pensions! XD
Edit: Actually, I also now see those shares were sold in 2006 when video rental stores began tapering off.
So...good on him and his administration on getting the most for his state's employees.

I clicked on the hyperlink in the Fox article, and it took me to the map which was displayed in a Fox affiliate article, which cited infowars, I never actually went to infowars lol. What are we arguing about? KN's crazy neighbors? Accusing my governor of listening to my crazy neighbors.
I mean, it isn't the first time a state has put it's defense force on standby during a US Army military exercise.
But the loonies in mainstream media, who is out looking for a buck from people who cannot tell the difference between protecting the public and keeping the "invasion" from happening, are selling this to loonies like Candlejack and Vic.

As long as we're acknowledging there are a few vocal crazy neighbors worth making fun of, then whatever is fine by me. And, sadly, crazy neighbors are in no way limited to Texas.

I'll take that as an obvious concession. Concession of what? You used the same sources as a person we are no longer supposed to mention on this thread because of his conspiracy theory posts.
I mean, if you don't want to associate with that person, you should use the same methodology that people demean him for in the first place. Even if you know the map is from a source highly known as inaccurate, you don't use it at all.
So, congratulations, you are part of the flower head group now.

I have the best neighbor ever. He's like 93, was a Marine in WWII and subsequently a history teacher, Purple Heart recipient in the Pacific Theater, and smokes two cigars a week and drinks Irish whiskey. And we have the best male neighbor relationship you can have.

Random Politics & Religion is for topics that aren't thread worthy on their own and do not have their own existing thread.
Rules and Guidelines
Forum Rules and P&R Section Guidelines still apply.
Satire is tolerated.
If your topic covers a story over 6 months old (Watergate, Benghazi, 2012 Election, etc.) post it here.
Discussions on racism, homophobia, transphobia, and the like are allowed, targeted insults based on these will not be tolerated.
Political debates get heated and are meant to be intense, if you take offense to being called or proven wrong, you don't belong here.
If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen; if you prove you can't handle the criticism you bring upon yourself in this thread, you may be removed from it. You are responsible for what you post.
Along those lines, heat is fine, but sustained, clearly personal hostility is not okay. The personal attack rules still apply. Attack positions, not posters. Failure to adhere to this will result in your removal from the thread.
This thread is NOT the Flame Core.
These rules are subject to change and modification where and when needed.
Random Politics & Religion may be mained or demained depending on the activity within at a Moderator's discretion.
With that out of the way, let the debates begin!
