Brazil and Mexico Cautioned Over Homophobic Football Chants

Quote:
With the World Cup now into full swing, we could be about to see a first for the tournament: several teams have been threatened with points deductions over the racist and homophobic chants of their fans.

Both Brazil and Mexico are under fire for fans who chanted ‘puto’, which is a term for a male prostitute and a gay slur in both Spanish and Portuguese. Brazilian fans chanted it at Mexico’s goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, while Mexican fans broke it out during their team’s match against Cameroon. Fifa has confirmed that it has opened disciplinary proceedings against the two countries - this will likely initially simply be a warning, but if either team’s fans continue the offensive chants then there could be point deductions made.

Keen to prove that homophobia isn’t the only form of bigotry alive and well, both Russia and Croatia are also under fire for fans who brought neo-Nazi and anti-Semitic banners to their matches. Both teams have been penalized in the past for racist and anti-Semitic chants, including “monkey calls.”

Piara Powar, executive director of Fare and a member of FIFA’s anti-racism task force, told British newspaper The Telegraph that “the levels of homophobic abuse at some matches is also totally unacceptable," adding, "there is some rapid education required before it begins to run out of control."

Both Brazil and Mexico play their next matches on Monday, June 23rd, and if ‘puto’ is heard again then there could be a serious impact on the tournament.

More word/PC policing from the LGBT. This is really absurd. Slang in Spanish takes on different meanings depending on the region/country.

Gay Soccer Fascism at its finest.

Rooster grilled cheese is not impressed with the amount of gay fascism.

What kind of world is this when we can't call the opposing team '***' on a globally televised event :(

Except it doesn't mean ***. Puto means *** or ***.

"***" is maricon, mariposa or joto.

Spanish slang takes on different meanings depending on the particular region or country. e.g. "cuño" takes on vulgar meanings only in specific regions.

EDIT: On another note. I missed Hillary Clinton's Book signing here in LA at the Grove. FML #ragequit

Well, rather than sort out regional nuances, FIFA simply tells them to shut the *** up. Problem solved.

FTFY

EDIT: In anycase Mexico's coach Miguel Herrera stood up against these gay fascists:

Quote:
There are more important things to resolve than things that have been said to goalkeepers in Mexico for some time

Quote:
It seems to me that it's not serious. You see that every time there's a sending off or a bad decision, the poor referee gets everything said to him, you would have to fine both teams in every match.

If people stop telling you what should you offend you. How will I know when to be offended ?

Pretty sure your article stated FIFA enacted disciplinary procedures. Unless they're run by the gay facists, too.

People need to just develop some thicker skin and stop being offended all the time. If one goes about life being offended by what everyone else says, I feel bad for them.

Those are Miguel Herrera's response to FIFA as of today so we'll see how they respond to him.

I really like this guy's reply to Frontier's Magazine on their Facebook page.

Old: "Grow a backbone. They're just words!"
New: "All this anti-gay backlash is facism!"

Is there some unbeknownst Goldilocks-level of sensitivity we should all be aiming for? Something just right that lies somewhere in between rolling over in submission and, you know, actually doing something about it.

Do your own thing, and stop worry about what others think about you. It's one thing if you're violently attacked for being gay, then obviously fight back, and/or press charges, etc. It's another thing getting offended by what other people in another country and culture are chanting at a soccer match.

But World Cup is serious business. It proves once and for all which is the greatest country in the world...at soccer.

More like somewhere between flipping out at every little offense and not doing anything about it.

I can definitely see the Croats with their nazi bs, but really that snippet has no context. Exactly what were they doing, to which team, and/or player? Anti-Semitic is broad term that sometimes has no meaning on the intent, especially in that part of the world. I'd have to see what they were doing.

Example, a lot of people think holding up the Israeli flag with a red circle with a line through it, is anti-Semitic. It's not, it's anti-Zionism.

Firstly there is a huge difference between homophobia and antisemitism. When I think of antisemitism I think of the holocaust and genocide, when someone yells "puto" I am not thinking of a genocide and I'm certainly not thinking of Matthew Shepard.

Secondly it's a game, its sports. People say all kinds of profane ***in the heat of the moment.

Lastly, the term isn't homophobic. Anyone saying it's homophobic needs to brush up on their Spanish. Hence the backlash on Frontier Magazine page already.

Huh? The context is bigoted behavior being penalized by the same organization. Perhaps I'm just a terrible person but it's not hard to imagine what racism and "monkey calls" entails. Is it wrong to want to restrict that type of behavior?

That is probably mild to what goes on at NFL games... people have been stabbed for wearing the "wrong" jersey.

I'll have to look into this. I was borderline fluent in Spanish about five years back, and I never heard it used in any context involving homosexuality. Then again, there's a type of Mexican bread with a name that's highly offensive in Argentina, so I guess it could be a weird regional thing like that.

Not everything in life needs to be so politically correct that life becomes a process of walking on egg-shells.

"Holy ***I can't say this word because in a certain region of Argentina it's homophobic!"

It doesn't involve homosexuality whatsoever.

Puto/a is slang for prostitute.
Puto = male prostitute.
Puta = female prostitute.

EDIT: Oh yes "panocha." It's a type of plain bread almost like a roll. However, depending on the context of the sentence it get's defined as pussy. This is a good example actually.

So you can be talking about bread or pussy!!!

See you have no concept of Eastern European politics and history. You're coming at this from an American neo-liberal point of view. You just take 'oh they're being anti-Semitic' at the word of whatever you're reading, disregarding any cultural meaning to them.
