If last year there were 5 million college educations available and there was a total of 150 billion dollars available to spend of them, then each education is going to cost an average of 30,000 bucks (right?)
Wrong.

If next year the government says we're gonna dump an extra 20 billion into the pool in new loan programs well now you have 170 billion over what is now 5.2 million educations. Now it costs 32,692 per education.

Also wrong.

Ragnarok.Nausi said: »
Multiply that by the past 20 years and it becomes painfully clear what has happened. Dumping easy money into the sector effectively distorts the value of what is exchanged. Pretty soon the easy money for college will have entirely destroyed the whole concept of higher learning as the price will be so astronomical that there will be absolutely no way for one to properly leverage the debt coming out of school.

Again, wrong.

kids are funneled into tiered systems based on aptitude.

we used to do that here but everyone thought it was unfair to the stupid kids in the "brown group"...

when I went to school we had "gold" "silver" and "brown" (instead of bronze) group...

they weren't even smart enough to deserve a metallic color lol.

The biggest issue here is requiring a 100k loan. That's messed up.

Allow me to educate you on the fundamentals of "supply and demand."

So the issue is capitalism and not liberalism?
Education is a right, not a privilege.

Supply and demand is an economic idea, as such it isn't exclusive to capitalism. It exists with or without capitalism.

Education is not a right, it is an entitlement and one that has been severely distorted and destroyed by liberal attitudes and policies.

One does not have a RIGHT to other people money, ever.

If you want to live in a better society you need as many highly educated people as possible. Making education only for few is counter-intuitive for the progress of a civilization...like usual traditionalists would rather encourage disparaging conditions.

Cause if you say that too many degrees reduces their economic worth is like saying that learing to read doesn't have any worth cause everyone can do that. Raise the intellectual level of a society and the entire civilization grows. Every person that learns how to perform surgery, how to fix a bridge, how to advance robotics, how to bioengineer food, etc. is worth it.

That being said, cut down stupid ***like women studies and the likes.

You have to let people compete on the job market for their skills on equal grounds, and not for who had the most money to learn them while everyone else didn't have access.

Yeah every college kid today is going to learn how to study robotics, engineering, and medicine.

Give me a *** break. Replace engineering with bong making, surgery with trying to score, and robotics with sleeping as late as possible. Degrees in "safe spaces" and "how am I being oppressed today" aren't with ***. I didn't say less people should study those specific noble pursuits just effectively that they should get their own money if they wanna go.

I'm not sure why people ***on degrees that aren't the cliche stuff. Do you want every student to rush headlong into computer science, doctoral, law and architecture programs? Because that's how you get a bubble. Just ask all the architecture degrees hyped only for the '08 housing market to implode.

Should you think about your degree program? Yes. Should you major in something super specific? Probably not, but I'm not you and your life is yours to live. Plenty of successful people were the same philosophy majors people make fun of and there are plenty of worthless MBAs running around.

It's about how you apply the degree, how you are as an individual and most importantly that the degree is just a key to open a door to whatever success you seek.

If we're so concerned with personal responsibility and not creating a new era of feudal serfs, education is the means for a self-sufficient society able to better itself rather than take handouts. Able to participate in democracy etc. Lower teen pregnancy rates. Broaden the taxbase etc.

But hey, lets keep jerking off to that person with a Puppetry degree. Feels good man.

I agree with all of this, though I think the issue with the liberal arts is that very few people have the insight to do something profitable with them. I think it's more symptomatic of the misconceptions of college being for everyone and ensuring a good job, as well as that the structure of a degree isn't necessarily the best thing for a field. That said, the stuff like women's studies still have value in our society, even if not a direct monetary one.

Part of the college experience is discovery. What's wrong with college kids getting high, having sex, and sleeping in? These things aren't exclusive to drop outs. Anyway, you should also bear in mind that Bernie's plan only provides free tuition (which does not cover everything, such as room and board) at public colleges/universities (community and state colleges), as well as lowering the interest rates on student loans.

and therein lies the rub...

not everyone has an aptitude for any "higher learning" you can't teach the kid that passes out every time he sees blood to be a doctor...

and our (the usa) process of "guidance" is shoving everyone that likes to play video games into computer sciences because they're kinda similar right?

we threw away all the aptitude tests because they weren't fair and we focused on feelings and likes and interests....
and then it's like trying to teach someone who can't walk and chew gum at the same time how to juggle chainsaws while riding a unicycle on a tightrope

Philosophy is not women studies.

Fact is some degrees are just pure ***, they only exist for the nepotism of professors. We got some like that in this country too. You literally can't complain if you can't find a job with a degree in "selfie science".

Yes you still need liberal arts, but smart ones at least.

Lowering the cost of college money will only make college MORE expensive. Were we not paying attention during the housing market crash? Or are we so indoctrinated and brainwashed that we actually believe that it was corporate greed?

Seriously, for such a rounded education, if college grads can't grasp this concept, they are indeed flushing that money down the toilet.

Education and healthcare are the two things I expect to be provided by a state. Everything else we can debate, but those two things should be rights alloted to every single individual regardless of their economic status.

It wouldn't even be that bad to be 7 billions on the planet, the problem is that the births are all in India. Meanwhile we get older, and they get..crowded.

Both are considered garbage degrees and a waste of time by laymen. Throw in Sociology and Psychology degrees for extra effect.

What people should ask kids is how they intend to turn their studies into something that can be a career path. Simply graduating at all is pretty much the baseline right now. Anyone who has had to job hunt without a degree at all knows how *** up a creek you are without a 2-4 year.

That is not how the world works and it never will. Plenty of ways exist to learn a trade that doesn't cost very much. Save up your money and invest in a higher education if you are not lucky enough to be born into money. Which is exactly what this is about.

Everyone wants to be equal? Naw, more like everyone wants to not be paying back debt for the next 35 years to obtain a piece of paper that is currently the bare minimum in terms of employability.

There are blue collar paths available that people could and should consider if book learnin' isn't for you. But if you think the plumbing market is going to be able to soak the amount of HS grads seeking a life well get the pipe wrenches, PVC tubing and *** cracks ready.
