It can be more than a consideration though. For some it's the most important thing there is and they wouldn't be able to be happy in a relationship without it. Some might see that as shallow but it just is what it is. Just like you might have humor as #1 or that guy needs an asian girl. It also just might be things we think we want until we actually get it lol... life's a tricky ***.

In any case it's not wrong to make that a priority even if it is superficial. People want what they want and you can't force someone to do something they don't want to it won't turn out good for anyone that way.

This was a couple pages ago, but it's a simple answer.

Men seek out fertility in women. Fertility is represented by their phenotype (outward appearance). Men seek out their own personal definition of fertility (See: influential women in their life), and women that present certain biochemical cues for fertility. Women, of similar attractiveness, who are close to their period, are more attractive than those women that are not, as an example.

Women seek out stability in men. A man who exudes their [women] definition of masculinity and stability is sought after. Stability can be represented in a few ways (See: influential men in their life), but is usually brought down to size, strength, and social status. This is why many women have issues with dating a man that is smaller than them.

This is also why men date younger and women date older, on average. Men seek out younger, more fertile mates, while women seek out stronger, more well-established mates.

These things are major deciding factors in mate selection, even now. Attractiveness is incredibly important, and influences our actions on a subconscious level. It is worth noting though that attractiveness has a wide degree of variance from person to person.
