I love the argument of "their jobs will be replaced with machines" good!
It's about time we cut cheap manual damn near slave labor out of the equation, and stop the debt cycle, and actually try to improve/innovate as a society. Nice idea, but people are generally too lazy to really have this happen.
Hence why:
I can't believe people still operate under the idea that wages didn't stagnate for decades while profits soared.
People getting taken advantage of by big businesses and alike because they're lazy. Do as little work as possible and not think for yourself.
Arrogance has sped up the process of course.
Ultimately providing the Idiocracy this country is headed towards.

Do as little work as possible and not think for yourself. *sniffs* Do I smell the bootstrap myth once again?
Man, the world would be great if everyone could be the CEO of their own private empire. 7 billion chiefs, zero Indians, to adapt a rather offensive metaphor that a co-worker chants like a mantra.

It's pretty simple to see why this is bad. If they start getting $15 an hour. then obviously everything will go up, economics 101. Enjoy $10 gas. $7 a gallon milk. $300 car insurance. etc. Companies will leave the area for the surrounding area to pay workers less, companies will stop shipping products to seattle, and it'll become the new nebraska... as in no one lives there.
The gains are temporary, the repercussions are monumental.

Except that this is literally what happens every time, everywhere, it's called outsourcing. How many products are made where labor is cheaper?
That's right, all of them.

I wonder if anyone has read the ordinance.
For one, it will take several years to be fully implemented. In 7 years time, we could elect another Republican President who could ruin the value of the dollar yet again and suddenly $15/hour will seem normal. It also appears to be removing employer contribution to health insurance, meaning that people may be making more (indeed, they will exceed the federal poverty guidelines for Medicaid) but having to pay out-of-pocket for the health insurance that is required by ACA.
I'm really less impressed as I read more about this. But I'm also someone who'd rather just see life-essential things like healthcare be fully socialized so I don't even have to think about them, so take my opinion with as much salt as is necessary.

The only way to truly fix the economy is a self inflicted Armageddon that pits brother against brother, fathers against their sons, mothers against their children, neighbor against neighbor, and so forth until the population of planet Earth has declined dramatically to the point of near extinction. Only then can we find salvation.

I can understand the betterment of ones self worth, I just can't quantify why it is so incredibly expensive for higher education. I think we could move a lot further if we reevaluated the cost of schooling in contrast to raising the minimum wadge.

With private schooling, it still comes to supply and demand.
More demand, higher prices, when education is treated as a withering resource and commodity.
Some of the post-secondary schools in Canada this year, are raising tuition costs by as much as 300% from last year, making it exceptionally harder to get into school, having to take bigger loans, pay higher interest on that loan, for longer periods of time, or go without certain certifications

When my parents went to college, their fees, even in adjusted dollars, were monumentally less than mine. And, even then, my father was attending via the GI Bill and my mother was a minority admission (white girl at a traditionally black college, go figure). I attended a state university, for the record, and one whose president had done everything he could to keep tuition and fees under control, but the board had other plans. Namely, they all needed to add a guest house onto their mansions.
Higher education shouldn't be seen as high school 2.0 in terms of employment qualifications. If it is to be seen as little better than a GED to have a BA/BS, then the cost should be comparable to what I paid for private schooling in high school (this was '90s dollars back when we still had an economy, but I think fees were in the range of $4,000 a year). Something needs to shift; I'd prefer that we stop sending kids to college unless they actually ought to be there. The drop-out rate for freshmen should be an indicator of what a crock the current system is.

Some of the tuition fees here in Canada weren't all the great to begin with, though depending on University, or other Higher Learning Institution, across the country, can vary depending on credit courses, and non-credit courses, etc.
I believe they range from as little as $150.00 at the extreme low, to $2,500 at the median, to $3,500 on the high end in Alberta, and thankfully, there are no current plans to increase tuition costs, where as in say, Quebec and Ontario, it's almost double what we pay in the West, and is set to triple even further in those provinces.
Here in Alberta, some schools give us the option of paying per credit, along with tuition and other fees, which keeps the costs marginally lower than most other places. Again, this varies with each Higher Learning Institute.

Smartest thing said in this whole thread. Yes Pleebo it has time and time again. Look at the manufacturing industry in the US. It's designed here then sent to China to be casted, molded, machined, and shipped here from China and Mexico. Why? Because the EPA cracked down and started taxing the foundries and all large companies that consume large amounts of power and resources. On top of that the labor fee is much much cheaper. That is why Detroit is the way it is now. I can get my parts made in China for 80% cheaper and that's after being shipped over in crates.
If you increase unskilled workers wages products will go up to match the rising cost of employment plain and simple. If you really think the large companies 1%ers will take a pay cut you are kidding yourself. Increase the wage and the small businesses will go out and the ones that don't you will be paying twice what you are now. The thing everyone fails to see is that yeah on paper smaller businesses make money but, you have all the cost of running a business like insurance, advertising, rent, utilities, loans, product. Also don't forget that the person that started the business put the time, heart, sole, late hours and put up the money and took the risk to start the business in the first place. You want them to take a cut and only make on average 10%-20% more then what some unskilled worker that is just there for a paycheck makes? You are a special kind of stupid. That is just for the smaller companies. Yes the 1%ers could pay more but they don't.

I know for a FACT that is the case. I am in that industry, there are 60% fewer foundries, machine shops in the US because of the low wages and less taxes and no EPA is other countries.

Facts are citable. What you wrote is a biased, unsubstantiated opinion. But yeah, let's compete with Chinese wages and environmental standards. People enjoy being paid a dollar a week and living under tangible blankets of smog.

I enjoy my Chinese wages, as it barely affords my house hold a bowl of rice that has to last all week for a family of five.
As for the blanket of smog, it makes for a nice blanket of filth that destroys my lungs and covers my body in enough filth that it has to be scraped off with particle board every night.

Globalization has been flooding the market with more and more competition for decades. It's not just that, but it is a very large factor.
Seattle enacts $15 minimum wage, a phased in big dream
Article without the ordnance itself but its complex.
Selected quotes:
Quote: Phased in over three to seven years, Seattle will have the highest minimum wage in America. We’ll still be a couple dollars below Australia....
“While this is a bold proposal, it is a moderate proposal: There’s a seven-year phase in,” Mayor Ed Murray said. The process of compromise brought “huge wins” for business, particularly small business, during implementation, the mayor added....
Inside the council chamber, however, attacks on the plan came from the left. Backed by a crowd of chanting supporters — and speaking to the crowd — Socialist City Council member Kshama Sawant tried to rollback provisions such as training wages and a temporary incorporation of tips into the $15 wage base....
At the same time, Sawant was declaring victory, saying that the battle for a $15-an-hour wage was “won on the streets,” adding, “We defeated the arguments of business in the corporate media....”
The sharpest critique of Seattle’s process has come from David Meinert, owner of The Comet Tavern and 5-Point Cafe, and a member of Murray’s task force. Meinert aired blunt opinions of the wage plan on his Facebook page last week....
“We have a messy ordinance with four different minimum wages, different phase in times for different businesses, a move away from standard definitions of what a business is and what an employee is, and confusing elements like ‘phasing out’ of tips and health care benefits.”
