The economy nearly always expands, more people working = greater productivity. I don't see what point kara is really trying to make.

KN's just turning this into another *** measuring contest because people were questioning him earlier in the thread. Now, he's trying to toss Kara's credibility under the bus since his was questioned.

Well shrunk might be the incorrect term, I'm sure he meant slows or retards.

Nope. Just my perception of what's going on. The cycle is predictable though.

Tax cuts for wealth individuals (Reaganomics) always net more total revenue for the government. So if the tax burden indeed needs to rise, that seems like a pretty good solution.
lol look at the fallacy of trickle-down economics being spouted again...

For starters you confuse ending a tax break with a tax increase, they're not the same thing.

Secondly: If you want to talk economics then talk to an economics person, not some failed political ideology from a hack middle of the road president who wouldn't get elected in today's politics if he was covered in gold.

I think you are grossly underestimating the stupidity of the american voter... go watch a couple episodes of Jersey Shore and tell me he couldn't win

Ban political ads from all forms of media. The population by enlarge is very gullible no matter has asinine the ads may seem.

An economy does not always expand. Every once in a while you get a recession (what US nearly got in 2008-2010) in which an economy either stops growing or shrinks a little. Nobody really knows why but the general consensus amount economists is that there is a cycle to recession every 20-50 years. So a government should, in theory, grab money when the economy is growing strong and spend money when the economy is slowing down.

Raising taxes to pay back public debt, in theory, would slow down the rate of growth for an economy. This is because, in theory, you are giving away a portion of your earnings to pay back debt and you should, in theory, has less money to save, invest or spend.

However, raising taxes alone does not necessary mean you will experience a recession (i.e. shrinking economy). For example, if you raise taxes on high income households and luxury goods then use those money to invest in job training and education then you might not get a recession at all. In fact, you can increase growth because your population is getting more educated and, trained thus more 'productive'.

Of course, it's meaningless if you can't enforce it and you just lose popularity and get no money.

Isn't that just part of what naturally happens when you artificially force-feed the beast?

If you think our financial collapse is bad, just wait until China has theirs. They're keeping the economy artificially high by building entire cities too expensive for anyone to actually live in.
