I loved playing AoE, and I did used to play on MSN Zone, with a few of the guys I worked with. good times.
OMG this is actually amusing, last time i visited my RL best friend we dusted off Age of Empires II... we both took an hour to make custom maps (being fair about it) and took turns playing them.
It's amazing how much fun the game can still be.
The only thing i wish you could do is play AOE2 in windowed mode... blah.

AoE I onry its the best one hands down! haha
whole bunch of people still play at IGzones.com. they have a patch out that can play with no CD and a few other minor tweaks, nothing too earth shattering
