It's still not determined rather they are dead or not, even if they are it's a loss but only on a larger scale because the media is covering it, lives are lost every day but the world keeps turning regardless. I hope they find the plane to give the families closure about everything though.

There are very conflicting reports as to what happened.
One report suggested that the transponder went down, military tracked unknown flight heading SW at low altitude.
Another report states that the countries Air force chief, Gen. Rodzali Daud, released a statement denying remarks attributed to him in a local media report saying that military radar had managed to track the aircraft turning back from its original course, crossing the country and making it to the Malacca strait to the west of Malaysia. The Associated Press contacted a high-level military official, who confirmed the remarks.
When you need NSA to spy and get the truth, they are nowhere to be found.

Levity in the face of potential adversity or tragedy is a coping mechanism for some people. Staying solemn all the time is not healthy for anyone. Some people less than others.

very very very very very very very few cell phones are completely factory waterproof >.>;
the only cellphones that are really "waterproof" are those lifecases, but I'm pretty certain they only protect over a certain water depth/level.
edit- yup, i just looked it up, up to 6.6ft >.>;

I think the point was that people here and elsewhere are being awfully flippant about what's almost certainly a tragic loss of life. It's certainly well within peoples' rights to be that way, but it shows a serious lack of empathy.
Anyway, back on topic. Here's an article from the WSJ speculating the plane may have flown for as many as 4 hours after contact was lost based on engine data transmitted to Boeing.

Lost got started as a collaboration between TV producers and writers since it is fictional. The story of flight MH370 started when a real plane full of real people disappeared. So I would have to say that no, this is not how Lost got started.
