Remora.Brain said: » Legalization of prostitution: I haven't read my way through this entire thread yet, but this one caught my eye. New Zealand has already legalized prostitution, and it hasn't gone particularly well, although some of that is due to the idiocy of the New Zealand Government. Loopholes exist in their legislation because they failed to adequately define where prostitutes could "work", and as such, brothels have popped up everywhere you can imagine, including next to schools. While I'm sure the clientele don't mind, general public sentiment toward prostitutes isn't exactly glowing if you know what I mean. The NZ Governments' main drive for legalizing prostitution was to ease the burden on the police force. The irony of course, is that the murder rate of prostitutes has gone up, and I'm sure that requires a tad more police work. It's also disgusting to know that since prostitution was legalized, some children have "found" their way into the trade. I remember an article from a couple of years ago where a member of the public had noticed a teenage streetwalker on one of the busier streets of Wellington. The person approached the teenager and said something to the effect of "You should be ashamed of yourself, what would your Mother think if she knew you were here?", to which the girl replied "You can ask her, that's her working the other side of the street!" Then there's sex slavery. Since prostitution was legalized, more and more sex workers have come into the country from other parts of the world, and although I haven't personally seen any articles citing evidence, there have been plenty of allegations that some are in the trade by force. Legalizing prostitution might sound like a good idea on paper, but it's one of those things that in reality, just opens up too many other cans of worms. By Remora.Brain 2014-02-10 05:08:42
I sincerely hope a person who aspires to become the president of the United States in the future is waking up at 5:08 AM (6:08 EST) and not turning in at 5:08 (6:08 EST) AM on a Monday. LOL! As for other sentiments on this thread... The future is looking bright. If you're going to legalize prostitution you should set aside specific areas and require a license.
Setting aside a specific area with some amount of protection and with the same zoning requirements as a strip club should be the most obvious of starting places for any government considering legalization of prostitution. The licensing process would require several forms of ID, monthly STD screenings, and disclosure of STDs. Any prostitute without a license or john using a prostitute without said license would be arrested and fined. Not having a license could mean that you're under-aged, have an STD you don't want potential customers to know of, or are evading taxes by working outside the system. Enforcing the those rules helps to protect the health of those involved and cut down on under-aged prostitution. It seems better than forcing consenting adults, of legal age, that turn to prostitution to put themselves into more dangerous situations in attempts to avoid the police. It also seems better than forcing everyone else to pay to lock these people away, especially considering these people wouldn't have been locked away for doing the exact same thing if money hadn't been involved. So instead of Police arresting prostitutes, they instead need to check their ID to make sure they are operating within the confines of the law? Doesn't seem like much of an improvement... It's a lot better that they check IDs and occasionally arrest a prostitute than arrest every prostitute they come across.
It saves us possibly hundreds of millions a year in housing prostitutes in jails/prisons, while allowing us to tax a sex industry that pulls in an estimated 30 billion a year. Safer and turns a profit. You have no idea of the stance of France when it comes to muslims, that's the issue in you talking about it. I've spent over 20 years of my life in a French city that is literally nicknamed "the capital of Maghreb". Now, in case you didn't know, Maghreb is the alliance of 3 muslim countries. I have never met a single muslim from said city that agreed with the need for Burqa in France, and you know why? Because the average muslim is a respectful person that wants to blend in and live a peaceful life, in peace with both his religion and the country he chose to live in. The Burqa tends to go against it and the cloth itself bred a new wave of extremist muslims wanting to disrupt the peace that the old generation of muslim who came to France in the 60's after the war built over the decades. Seriously, don't even talk about this topic, you're pathetic. America's actions can't be stopped for many reasons. Same goes for China and Irael. Now, you'll notice something funny between these 3 countries and what has been happening in Africa and middle east. The rest of your post was nothing but ***, literally, you're nothing but a puppet of your government, unable to think for yourself and dig in the mountain of information that is internet in order to understand what is going on. Furthermore, you even open your mouth about a topic you have no clue about. That's the main reason as to why you're laughable. You keep feeding on what your American medias tell you, like a good boy, like a good sheep. Keep it up, you're literally the American model they want you to be. Stay in your Texas ranch with your friends the buffalos and the friend chickens, nobody will pull you out of it, don't worry. Can I be the first Muslim cracksmoke to be president? Oh wait...

Pssst! Hey, you! He's not in Texas. Thanks for the stereotype though. It's nice to get a gauge on people's real feelings, no matter how inaccurate and crude. Wow someone is angry lol. Your rage it confuses me!
You're right on the first part I can't really claim to know the full stance as I'm only going off some articles I read. It still seems to impose an infringement on personal religious freedom whether or not there are a number of muslims that agree it is not necassary to wear one. The ones that do want to wear one should not be allowed to? You can't be a respectful muslim that just wants to live a peaceful life in a burqa? They can't be stopped for a number of reasons? Please enlighten my ignorant self. Puppet of my government? Living in Texas? Am I a republican now too? I may be ignorant about some things i'll admit that but overall no. I don't live in texas either lol. It is truely easy for you to throw out baseless insults about things you have no idea about lol. Sounds to me though more like you're ruled by emotion and have no grasp on what reality actually is. You really don't have much to say other than call me names do you? Edit: Also, if you're going to accuse someone else of ignorance you shouldn't speak about things that blatantly show your own. Safer and turns a profit. Assuming an industry accustomed to illegality is willing to become 100% legal. Somehow I find that unlikely. I can't imagine your average streetwalking prostitute, as opposed to the high dollar call girls, not wanting to change to safer environments that also prevents them from having to worry about about police whatsoever.
It's like that in a few countries and it works. Yes, it sure isn't easy to make it work because there's a lot surrounding it, but your approach is a bit too fatalist.
edit: at Atheryn although i agree with your assumptions about prostitution, what a criminal wants should be the lowest consideration in domestic policy, even if it aligns with more important reasoning.
If you feel you are good enough for presidency then try to play Democracy 3. It's a fairly realistic simulator for politics and economy. You just need to do everything you wanted to do (legalize prostitution, weeds...etc) and pray that people won't hate you enough so you can get enough votes for next election.
I think prostitution is one of those things that's a little different in that the ones often considered the criminals can be the ones most taken advantage of.
There's no law against f*cking consenting strangers of legal age, but if you f*ck consenting strangers of legal age and take a few bucks for it, it's suddenly a crime. So the most tangible reason for it being illegal in this day and age is tax purposes. I think it's really just another means for people to earn themselves a living if they're either desperate or just okay with making a living that way. Regardless, many people can benefit from this. Prostitutes, Johns, families of Johns who are affected because of cheating partners, and anyone who benefits from government projects that benefit from the tax revenue. All you folks who are talking about sex workers and its industry... have you ever actually done any reading up on it? I have to assume not by the exclusive use of the word "prostitute."
It's actually a really complex affair, even in countries like the US where it is not only illegal but regularly prosecuted. The laws largely exist to prevent people being streetwalkers, which is just as well considering the insane amount of danger involved for being at the bottom of the payscale. Most folks who want to legalize or decriminalize sex work, though, are a completely different sort altogether. Same goes for their clientele, and not merely as a consequence of differing economic circumstances. What's really interesting, at least in my mind, is looking at the differences between female and male sex workers in the US. The latter group is actually kind of remarkable in ways that reflect very badly on our cultural values regarding gender. Lol...hypothetical warfare. The west coast's missile defenses are built up, even if they did get a missile in the air, all we'd have to do is shoot it down with something that can intercept it before it reenters the atmosphere, then maneuver one of the 18 Ohio-Class nuclear submarines near North Korea, and we can pretty much select key points for the roughly 20-24 nuclear missiles those submarines have. 20-24 targets selected, and pretty much say "If you try to launch a nuke at us, we'll pretty much just lay waste to a good chunk of your land." I'd rather intimidation be used instead of destroying innocent (Though some brainwashed) civilians and their homes. Lakshmi.Feint said: » I demand a pie graph!
