Long story short, the stupid games with basically no point to them (Like Farmville comes to mind), make a ton of money selling ingame currency for real world money. RMTing.
As-is, Farmville has made more money than any video game, ever. Encouraging crappy, lifeless games in that genre rather than actually well-thought-out games. Since Farmville took about a week to design and has made more money than games that have taken years to design.
