He said he didn't want to stop for two weeks. I asked if he actually didn't want to or he couldn't. He ended up losing that bet the next day... easiest $100 I ever made... dude has a real problem though. Lakshmi.Flavin said: » Ramyrez said: » Seriously. I've seen life after drinking. If you look at the "am I an alcoholic" lists and believe the "if you say yes to even one of these your an alcoholic," then yeah. I suppose I fit the word. (edit:though, as a note, based on what people around here have said, so do about 80% of the posters here.) I think those lists lack serious nuance and are of questionable validity without a professional D&A councilor or psychologist involved, but that's just like, my opinion man. It's not a hard stop - special occasions and work conferences, I'll still have a few - but my regular consumption is gone, and I honestly couldn't be happier for it. I will assert that it's also not easy to stop, but that's because I'm a person of habit as much as anything with a certain degree of ritual in nearly everything I do. Cutting out part of that is hard no matter whether it's drinking, eating, scratching my balls, whatever. (edit: even posting here; there are certain events at work where I have to stop doing anything and wait for things to process through systems, and I pretty much instinctively tab into browser at that point.) I too, however, have drastically cut back and the results have been largely positive. Including the reduction in empty liquid calories, not just from the alcohol itself, but also in the pop I was drinking/mixing along with. I've cut out most alcohol as a part of a larger scale effort to improve my lifestyle overall and, at least so far, it's been successful. I was talking more about that single mother who just got off her 12 hour shift going home to make sure her kids are tucked in and such so the drunk *** doesn't ram into her car and come out relatively unscathed while she dies on impact and her family is then forever scarred.... everything is a personal affront to remo mcfeely!
Anyone else always tip in cash? I'm not sure how tips work these days and how they dispense them later but I always feel if I CC them the actual person who served as the waiter/waitress doesn't get that full tip. They're the only one that deserves it damn you!

I picture people squished like sardines walking from place to place. Lakshmi.Flavin said: » Anyone else always tip in cash? Always. It's basically the only reason I carry cash anymore at all. I carry around a ton of cash, only because old gangster movies made me think it's the thing to do.

I did just read an article though and found out there is some kind of underground racing thing in Chicao on lower Whacker in the middle of the night. Lakshmi.Flavin said: » I figured I was doing the public a service keeping that money out of the hands of the bar he was probably going to go to that night and get drunk at. Well sure, he might be better off, but what about that small business owner? WHY DO YOU HATE CAPITALISM, FLAV. Lakshmi.Flavin said: » Anyone else always tip in cash? They're the only one that deserves it damn you! Yes. Because even if the business doesn't skim off the CC tip, it has to be reported into taxes if it's paid by CC. I'm not saying those in the service industry shouldn't pay taxes, but I think it's up to them how they go about reporting it or not, and let them suffer the consequences if someone at the IRS has such a bug up their but that they want to audit a poor server at Primanti's. Siren.Mosin said: » I carry around a ton of cash, only because old gangster movies made me think it's the thing to do. I went through a period where I carried little to no cash, but I've started frequenting a few small businesses recently that, while offering CC services, get gouged pretty hard by the major CC banks for the surcharges, so I pay cash whenever I can. Tipping lol, poor souls
Bismarck.Dracondria said: » Tipping lol, poor souls I'm not a big fan of the system. I'd rather they just made a real wage like everyone else, but that's how it is right now. The least I can do is take a tiny step (carrying cash) to see that they lose less of their money to CC fees. It's not done in Sweden unless it's a fairly fancy restaurant
Bismarck.Dracondria said: » It's not done in Sweden unless it's a fairly fancy restaurant Yeah, it's not widely done in Europe as far as I can tell. I read a thing recently about a bartender in GB and he said he can pick out Americans in a crowd normally (we are, apparently, more outgoing and friendlier to strangers? Who knew?) and he tries to be extra-good to them because they tip and don't realize it's not a thing there, so he can make mad money on a night with a lot of Americans in his place. Look, man. I love that movie too, but that is like...the Godwin of tipping discussions.
I actually didn't like the movie. Not a Tarantino fan. I also don't agree with Buscemi's methods here and I always tip 15%. I just thought it would fit in with the discussion.
I'd ask in faux outrage "how can you not be a Tarantino fan!?" but the fact of the matter is, I understand completely how you can not be a Tarantino fan.
My favorite comment about him -- and I sadly forget to whom it should be attributed -- is that "he doesn't so much make movies as remix movies; he's a DJ of movies." Seriously, though, I'd love to see tipping go away.
It introduces an element of risk to the income of someone who is statistically unlikely to be a high earner (yes, some people can make bank off tips, but those are not the standard, and it's silly to think they would be). Having a bad day and don't feel like smiling? Better suck it up, because no one tips a sourpuss. Don't respond to my hamfisted attempts at flirting? Well, your refusal to put up with sexual harassment for an extra 2% is noted, miss. |
