But generally speaking there are so many people willing to take advantage of someone that I'm almost to the point of rejecting the first bid someone gives, and tell them they need to do better than that.

A lot more problems stem from people rejecting "reasonable" prices and finding someone to do it on the cheap. I'd frequently get people storming out of the shop saying we were trying to take advantage of them and coming back a few months later when whoever's brother-in-law or neighborhood garage screwed up or caused a bigger issue by trying to skip steps.

Itemized quotes should be the standard, if you just get a number, I'd think twice about using them. A good contractor should also give you itemized adjustments to a bid if additional costs occur.

Today was a good day. Had to buy a new 3TB hard drive, as mine survived multiple plane trips only to start dying yesterday watching reruns of Two and A Half Men. Speedfan read an 80 for lifespan where it should be between 90-100. Paid off a Serbian mobster the money I owed him for like 3 weeks. Good day, y'all.

If you contract for work, it's reasonable for the company to request justification for what you're reporting. When I worked for Nissan, we had to attribute every clocked hour to a particular project. At VW, we even punched a realtime clock for each job code, including subcodes. So, if you had a repair that had several steps without a global job code, you were back and forth to the clock for every step, even though you didn't get paid actual time, you had to prove that you had actually spent the time doing it. I was a real struggle for guys like me that had 2 stalls and would frequently have multiple jobs in process at once.

see... automotive companies are the worst...
I always fight back because what we do is not just punching a clock... and they want the work guaranteed that means the possibility of call backs and they want you to fit all the work into time windows during shutdowns and they want the total up front before you ever see itand they want two union goons breathing down your neck the whole time and you have to comply to all their rules for PPE and training and insurance and CONJUNCTIONS COST EXTRA!
