my grandpa served like a ***. he chauffeured for an admiral in the navy during WWII. he got a shark skin suit for real cheap in HK. that's the only story he ever told me. i have an uncle who was in nam though. he's about as bat ***crazy as they come.

yeah my other grandpa was in the navy in the korean war, but he never said anything at all.
& I guess I lost an uncle in vietnam, but it's kind of hard to mourn / know much about someone you never met.

My father almost served in Nam. The night before he was supposed to ship out (he was a Navy man), he and a bunch of his buddies decided to go out drinking. Well, no one bothered to designate a driver so on their way home they decided to wrap their vehicle around a tree.
My father broke several vertebrae (although surprisingly did not die or lose feeling in his extremities) and was medically discharged.
Let's see... my grandfather served on a tin can in the Pacific theater in WW2, my eldest brother was discharged from the Navy boot camp for lying on his application, my second youngest brother just came home a couple years ago after doing MI work in Hawaii for the Army(staring at aerial photographs all day) and the youngest one just came home to Wisconsin last year after serving with the Marines doing helicopter maintenance. Also, that lucky *** got to travel to places like Greece and Dubai.

My dad missed Vietnam by one year, so they sent him to go party hard in Germany! Guess how my parents met! LOL!
My American grandfather was stationed in India and North Africa during WWII. He was in what used to be the Army Air Corps. He met my grandmother during flight training in College Station when my grandmother was at Texas A&M.

That's three generations of mind-*** spanning from great-grandparents to my mom's generation. Some of it gets a little depressing. My German side of the family is awesome and I love them, but from WWI, to Weimar Republic, to WWII, to reconstruction there's a lot of suicides, alcoholism, and abandonment.
