Still a waste of $1,000 I think Hotz should demand money for his PC. I mean seriously, he PAID for it, and *** Sony just *** steals it with the help of *** Government.

Maybe he should have thought about that before he did breached the DMCA
Briefly reading through DMCA but haven't seen anything against hacking a console.

It's not just the DMCA genius, you have to think about the individual company as well, by hacking their property (yes even after you bought it, it is still THEIR property) you are pretty much just asking for them to open up lawsuits and all this ***.

Oh yeah, and in the DMCA you won't find jack ***about "hacking"

The term your looking for is more aptly referred to as "modding"

As in they are modifying existing code to be able to read and execute illegal copies of software that is owned by Sony.

I find it funny that the government says modding an iPhone is okay yet PS3 it's not.

I mean yeah, I'm against pirating, but Sony is making a hurricane out of drizzle clouds.

Cause really when it comes to cell phone modding... it's a waste of time to pursue anything about that, just leave it up to the company to pursue that if they really want to, really the only thing that I have seen apple pursue about anything bad was the whole itunes hack thing that let people get ***for free.

Gaming consoles are more at a loss then with cellular devices since everything is more expensive.

With a hacked iPhone you get what... to pick your service provider?

With a hacked PS3 you would be able to download and rip games, $60 a pop people are losing out on a lot of money. I would put the money I have made developers lose out on in the thousands since I got a modded PSP alone and those games are worth about half as much.

I admire what Sony is doing about it, thinking just of the game developers they are trying to protect.

Catnip: True. I just think that Sony's making it sound like the poor guy should get executed for that stuff. They should do what Microsoft did a few years back, just make their console unusable. It's Sony's property too right? Why not update the console to break if the key gets used.

Lillica: I was reading that it was more of letting the iPhone use apps that Apple doesn't approve.

They're not trying to protect the devs. They're trying to work on their image. If they were trying to protect the devs, they would've done something about PSone emulators, PS2 emulators and roms by now.

It's all for the PS3's image of "being unhackable"

By setting an example for this one guy sony is ensuring noone will attempt this without negative things happening to them, i'm sure if this keeps happening then they will implement something that will detect if the systems code has been altered in any way and pretty much make the console a big worthless piece of plastic.

Microsoft at least did something right in the aspect of punishing people for modifying their consoles to accept illegal copies of games, but as far as I know it only limits you from not being able to go online, or does it completely lock out your account/console?

I kinda agree with what Sony is doing, if they didn't at least set an example to people to what extent they are willing to go to punish piraters then nothing will happen and it will continue to happen.

No it's not. its about oh ***the money we could lose if nothing sells. It's not their image, it's not the devs, it's their own profit.

You do know that this kid hacked the PS3 in 2009 then in early 2010, right?

If Sony was protecting the game devs, why didn't they sue him last year or earlier when he successfully hacked the PS3 the first time?

They're only suing him because they realized that they can't fix it with any updates.

uhhhh....

really?

I mean really?

I think they are thinking about the devs when they are punishing people that are in essence stealing their games, i'm not sure how you can deem it that they are thinking about only themselves when they obviously are trying to do something so they and the devs won't lose more money.

PSone and PS2 is dead technology as far as anyone cares, they aren't and won't be getting money since they aren't as many if not any game developers even developing on those consoles anymore.

I thought that was kinda funny and honorable of microsoft to do that, what better way to make sure your phone/system is secure then let someone that obviously knows how to get into their system test it and try to hack it.

Yep.
Because no matter what those guys will try to jail break your device. Thats how those guys work. It's fun to them to break code. Why not test your device against the best in the world, for free lol.

I wonder...

If someone hacks the PS3 in a 3rd world country without these laws, can Sony still sue them like they did here?
