Ah well.

I really have to go back to my manifesto. Meeeh.

I'm thinking of writing a Slender Man story for the next 6 weeks.
:| I'm not a very good writer myself.. But if you give me a play or something akin to a play, I'm a half decent actress.

why don't you try your hand at a full-original work?

Because I've been trying since September 15th, 2003, 3:30pm.

I have so many plans and notes for it, yet it can never just seem to come together the way I want it to. That's why I wrote When Jeuno Fell; it was more like a vacation from Legion, the one I started years ago.

Edit: I just refer to it as a manifesto because of all the notes lol, should have specified.
Is it just an unfinished draft or have you not fully completed the story line?
Nice on the timeline.
My novel was going to be pretty nuts conceptually.
I have it buried with the outline and I'm a few chapters in...
Full of secret codes and different patterns.
like 23-word paragraphs and 23 chapters and stuff like that.
really restrictive way to write but it made me kind of get more creative.

I had most of the story line planned, but I could never be happy with a draft while I wrote it.

I was considering just blitzing through a draft and then shelfing it for a few weeks then going back to working on the actual writing part.

How did you start it out?
Did you do the end first or what method did you go about doing it?
If you want someone to throw ideas at I'd be happy to go for it.
I think if I would have went for being an editor rather than a creator I might've done a lot better lol.

I started by writing some of the backstory to get myself into the world I was building, and then I started to write the story linearly, swapping perspectives to keep it interesting.

I used to write, myself. :D

Mostly on roleplay forums though. I like writing short stories with other people involved, never know where it's gonna go.

I always had trouble with writing a story in linear form.
I go with the old standard to an extent.
Establish who the character is in the beginning, Establish a badass ending.
And then gradually fill the blanks for the middle.
The most essential part is the middle.
I see that fuddled with so much being an anime and film buff...it's outrageous sometimes.
Where they take that method and then just throw in some convenient but nil explained concept that puts the main character in the situation that he is and then kind of just snowballing from that.
But writing linear is just way too hard I think unless you are like writing non-stop to finish pretty much IMO.
Also a lot of the other plot bubbles and techniques seem to help.
who is your character as a person, why your character is the way he is?
and who is he in regards to his surroundings and also going into detail about the surroundings...all hard to do while bunched up within a linear plot.
I'd honestly say if you've sat on it as long as you have doing an outline rather than a draft could be a good option.
That outline can become a draft as you work and then you go at it...seems to work from where I see it and from other writes I've studied under.

When I was 10~ I started on roleplay forums. By age 12 I had started the rudimentary elements of what is now called Legion.

Edit: Thanks for the tips, Vinnv. I think that my problem is honestly that while I've been working on it for so long, I simply haven't caught up as a writer to what I want to do. Basically, I feel like I key-whored up my level (story) but have to do the skillups now (writing talent) :3

I wrote a full novel and made it into a graphic novel(with dbz-stylized characters) when I was 9.
Think fist of the north star meets dragon ball z/gt.
the story was good IMO but the art was garbage.

Well if you want to ever bounce some ideas I'm open to it.
Constructive criticism and the insight of others can be some of the best help when you are learning to be a better writer.
We can always be our worst critic I do believe, getting different perspectives can make your growth as an author go to new leaps and bounds if you let it.

I did that with a few character names.
my first one I had was pretty nerd-weaboo-ish.
"Mactilleone Fallenore"
I had a guy named Sirius before Sirius Black...i think it was "Sirius Starwell" or something like that...but hey I was 9 lol.
Now I've came to puns and double meanings and whatnot...
mactilleone came from a name i made for a gameboy game that only accepted 4 character names and then I expanded upon it lol.
But at that time DBZ and Gundam Wing names were pretty luxurious and stylized to a childs eyes lol.

Kane -> Kain -> Kane -> Cane -> Kain -> Kane -> Cane -> Cain.

Cain is here to stay.

And let's not even get started on the villain's name. His first name started off sounding like Calamari, now that I read it out. Now he's Marcus Anceps.

And amg Gundam Wings almost made me name someone Lucretia.

Now she's Lycea.

I made my whole storyline first and established that before I did the characters.
Do you read manga?
If you do I'd suggest reading Bakuman...it does storytelling and development justice IMO even if it's in a manga setting.

Some of my characters had to be named first. It was just part of who they were.

Cain is a Cain, and that's all there is to that :3

just depends which school of writing you come from.
plot driven or character driven.
being able to do both makes you a lot more versatile though.
i personally like starting fresh when I have a work that's stagnated to the nth degree.

I'm a firm believer that the plot should be created by the interactions between your characters. That's how life works.

developing the characters is good and fine and all, but it doesn't make you a better writer doing it just one way :/
trying it the other way makes you better at the part that you are lacking in and can help you further on character driven plot.
there is no right way to write though :D

Perhaps I should rephrase.

I feel that a work is a lot more realistic when the characters create the plot. Literally.

If you want to write fanfics and stories made for children solely you could say that would be the "only" way.
But it's a lot more complicated than that.
Can't be a master of storytelling like Stephen King for instance by only focusing on the characters.
defining what each role a character will play without "giving them life" is better IMO because they aren't supposed to have life until the story is completed past what's in your head.
I'm not saying you are wrong in thinking that making good characters is an essential...but it's not THE essential.
fanfics facilitate an ideal such as that just because the set and setting already exist to an extent :/

I know I am not properly phrasing what I want to say lol. I'm not talking about only focusing on them. I'm talking more about in the planning and translation from planning to paper. BLEH I DO NOT HAVE THE WORDS TO EXPLAIN YET THE CONCEPTS ARE RAMPANT IN MY HEAD BLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

you can always do like a bubble diagram for the relationships between the characters with an overlay of how they come together within the plot.

what i was saying was actually writing a new work with plot as a focus...not to be your main prize piece...just a practice piece.
as a writer doing it a bunch of different ways is pretty good.
try your game at a romance a mystery and stuff like that can also help.
in my creative writing class we wrote one short story a day to facilitate that kind of growth.
but essentially the more you write and the more different things you write the better a write you'll become and you'll become better at saying the things you want to say because you're able to do it in more ways than one :P
edit:
and that's me pretty much regurgitating what every college professor I have had and what they say to do over the years.
concepts are good but when you get stuck on them they can be devastating in a writing career.
