It would really be wonderful if there was a cure for cancer. Both my paternal grandparents died of it. But it's probably a pipe dream, because:
Bahamut.Baconwrap said: »too bad there is more than one type of cancer. Cancer drugs are about as effective as hiv meds. The minute the condition mutates, onto next treatment option.
So what we really need is something concrete to prevent people from getting cancer in the first place.
the problem is that each cancer is a different disease, each/most have a different cause. E.g liver cancer vs lung cancer vs breast cancer.
So it's like one caused by liquor, another by cigarettes and the other can be caused purely by genetics.

Start by closing down terrible fast-food restaurants like McDonalds.
Then, idk, create some drug that eats fat, or something.
No people just need to stop being lazy ***. You can overeat and be thin/healthy if you actually exercise or do reasonable amounts of activity. I exercise so that I can enjoy my food and still look and feel good. Obesity getting labeled a disease just gave people, that already had a million excuses, a million and one excuses.
Look up the concept of "Pre-existing condition"...and then re look at obesity being classified as a disease.
Obese people will be paying through the nose for insurance and/or denied insurance as well.

Thought nyp was more of a tabloid really?
Thats why looking at the sources for the NYP is using for the actual study is important, especially with science articles. What you have from the NYP, and any other news source that quotes or tries to tell you about a scientific study, whether it be from the news or a tabloid, is some guy who works for said news organization who knows a bit about every science field trying to summarize a highly technical article in a specific scientific field.

And again I say, there are genetic predispositions to being fat and/or losing fat.
Now, I could eat even fewer calories and enjoy my food less. And if I were willing to give up even more time doing things I enjoy to exercise more, I could lose a bit more weight and I may even drop a single pants size over the next year. So, despite my obvious facetiousness on the topic, I'll exclude myself from the sample.
I know a woman who is very overweight. I've known her by association since middle school. She had two very overweight parents (that is to say, they were both beyond morbidly obese. Probably approaching BMIs of 50+). She was very skinny as a child and dieted and exercised for years for at least two hours a day from the time she was approximately 15. Not just out "being active," because she did that as well. She specifically did power walking and running every day on top of her normal school and extracurricular activities.
Didn't matter. By the time she was 25 she had an expanding waistline/thighs/stomach. As far as I know, to this day she continues to exercise to fight it, but she's only reducing the progress. Not undoing it.
In this regard, some people are just sabotaged by their own body. Just like cancer, or heart disease or various mental health disorders.
I understand your impetus for saying what you say, but the bottom line is, it is a sweeping statement that -- much like this discussed cancer drug -- is too broad to actually provide any hope to people actually dealing with the problem.

Cancers are like different species but the same genus. Yes they have different etiologies and prognoses, but they also have similarities that could lead to a single cure.

I'm pretty sure Steve Jobs and people insanely rich/powerful like him would have had their cancer cured if there was really one. If there was a cure for cancer, pharma's would be all over it and overprice the ***out of it, be glad you are Canadian. Sounds about right, let America do the work and let Canada tax itself so much and tell its citizens how cheap everything is.
Come to Canada! After exorbitant taxes and waiting in line for 6 months, your doctor visit is free! Did we contribute anything to the medicines and treatments we "give away"? lol Of course not, but we will criticize, because after all, we are still kinda European, and being back seat drivers is what we do best!

With the lack of medical care and people NOT caring, it's turning into a huge problem. Blaming that "everyone is just lazy" is just as bad as saying that everyone who is on food stamps is a mooch.. it's not true. Some people are, but not everyone.
There are a lot of genetic conditions that lead to weight gain/loss, and it's not all about "eat right and exercise" all the time. Thyroid problems, depression and hell even estrogen/testosterone imbalances can lead to weight gain.
It's like cancer.. every case isn't the same and you can't treat every case the same. One miracle pill might work for some, but others it will have no effect.

Yes and no. The issue is a tad bit more complex then "they're lazy ***", particularly when you start looking into the fact that culturally there's this view that fat is always the devil, carbs are salvation, and protein is for super mad brolloc body builders, and that everything's as simple as calories-in-calories-out.
And there's also a gross amount of psychological factors. We human beings are not, in any way whatsoever, from birth to handle hunger pains. It's a self-continuing cycle; feel hungry, bloat because that's what evolution taught us to do, next day your body expects that many calories.
And let's not even get into depression, or how obese people are often simply unable to even recognize how much they're eating.
But by all means, just keep thinking that fat people are simply lazy.
That said, I have no pity for fat people. I am a fat person, and it's *** disgusting to be fat. I personally am working to be unfat. But not everyone's imperative mission in life is "not being fat", nor should it be. There's far more to worry about than that.

I'm working on changing my weight as well, and it's a hard slope. Diet and exercise haven't been enough for me in the past, but I do feel better and more active.
There's just so many factors in determining weight loss, and a lot of it is genetic. Lack of medical care just escalates the problem.
I just need to see a doctor, and no insurance is a bummer. In MA I couldn't even get an appointment without insurance, it sucked. Hopefully here is different.

What a lot of people don't realize is that there's a lot of experimentation and a lot of failure to losing weight. I went through a lot of different things. You'd think it's just as simple as "eat less".
Tried several calorie restrictive diets, no dice, just made me miserable and lost a trivial amount of weight at most.
After a long *** experimentation time bouncing around, I ended up on a high fat, medium protein, very low carb diet. *** boom; finally, something my body understood.
Unfortunately, I really miss pasta :(

Unfortunately, I really miss pasta :( I need to do the "trial and error" as well, but with no job at the moment, it's do what you need to for survival. Once more money starts to come in, I can try different ideas and see what my body will react to better.
I have started eating a LOT better since I moved to OK, and I've gained a lot more muscle and lost a bit of weight since exercising, but I think just finding that magical mixture will help me be on the right track.

There quite a few steps involved, not limited to (in no particular order):
- consumption
- digestion
- absorption
- metabolism
In each of these steps, there may be one or more influences by (in no particular order):
- genome (and gender)
- diet
- stress
- intesinal residents
- physical environmental factors
- culture
That's not to say that people can't make choices to improve or optimize their weight.
Keep in mind exercise is something done primarily for health concerns; weight loss/fat reduction is primarily driven by diet.
One thing to keep in mind when reading labels: unlike how you may have measured foods in science classes, food labels are not based off of bomb calorimetry data for the particular food, and bioavailability of caloric content is definitely still not something well defined.
There is no question that calorie restriction causes weight loss, and personal choices play a role. But what works for one person is not necessarily applicable to the next person.
And that doesn't even go into the stupid shitty factors, such as variable labeling in the US (e.g. 1 package, 1 cup, 1 serving), rather than a static comparative quantity(e.g. per 100g/100ml/8oz/8floz).
Or that there is more money in treating the symptom than the problem.

Meh, I'd love to get my hopes up, especially considering family history, but I'm not holding my breath.
Is it exciting? Yes, but I'm holding out until clinical trials can show what types of cancer it is effective against, and what the short term effects are (for terminal stage cancers) and long term effects are.
Now, considering the typical chemotherapy's affect on appetite and weight, you can say that it is still somewhat on...topic.
But I'd rather be fat than have cancer. Fu*k cancer.

The theory right now is that all types of cancer should be treatable with this method, if I'm reading it correctly. Cancer isn't really that complicated a disease. They're just immortal mutated cells that reproduce uncontrollably. Healthy cells have a "Kill Switch" built in that stops them from dividing after so many splits, but DNA damage (See: Radiation) can remove the kill switch, and thus cause the replication to continue forever.
I doubt this "Cure" if it worked as intended, would be the 100% "End all cancer" solution, but it would probably be used to buy valuable time to attack the disease with a suite of methods. If it works like a vaccine as they say, it'd at least cripple or slow metastasis.

If this does cure cancer this will never reach the people the medical systems make a fortune with kemo and radiation and so sergery's. there has been natrual cures for cancer for a long time but they do not want you to know about it because they can not make money

Well if we're going by what Zicdeh says, then radiation is bad for cancer (not just for cells but what it does to the body isn't pretty either). So people find an alternative so they don't have to do it. Most of the time it becomes so far spread that the only way to stop it is radiation, and even that might not work.
Lose/lose situation if you ask me.

He probably weighed the risks of dying from cancer, with the risks of "Looking mainstream" by using "Conventional" Medicine. In the end, Apple's image endured!

When they "Irradiate" Cancer, they're not causing minor DNA damage, they're completely killing anything in the area.
When you talk about radiation damage to DNA, you're mostly dealing in stuff that's Low, but higher than background radiation, usually over extreme periods. The biggest contributor? The sun.

What that means is that there is no real way to point out the cell phone as the cause, even if the cancer was located in approximately the same location (Note, it was the location of the phone, not the antenna). And unfortunately, when dealing of a overall sample size of millions(if not billions), despite the personal hardship she has had to go through, the impact on a few tens is not enough to draw any conclusions.

New wonder drug matches and kills all kinds of cancer — human testing starts 2014
Quote: Stanford researchers are on track to begin human trials of a potentially potent new weapon against cancer, and would-be participants are flooding in following the Post’s initial report on the discovery.
The progress comes just two months after the groundbreaking study by Dr Irv Weissman, who developed an antibody that breaks down a cancer's defense mechanisms in the body.
A protein called CD47 tells the body not to "eat" the cancer, but the antibody developed by Dr Weissman blocks CD47 and frees up immune cells called macrophages — which can then engulf the deadly cells.
The new research shows the miraculous macrophages effectively act as intelligence gatherers for the body, pointing out cancerous cells to cancer-fighting "killer T" cells.
The T cells then "learn" to hunt down and attack the cancer, the researchers claim.
“It was completely unexpected that CD8+ T (killer T) cells would be mobilized when macrophages engulfed the cancer cells in the presence of CD47-blocking antibodies,” said MD/PhD student Diane Tseng, who works with Dr. Weissman.
The clinical implications of the process could be profound in the war on cancer.
When macrophages present "killer T" cells with a patient's cancer, the T cells become attuned to the unique molecular markers on the cancer.
This turns them into a personalized cancer vaccine.
“Because T cells are sensitized to attack a patient’s particular cancer, the administration of CD47-blocking antibodies in a sense could act as a personalized vaccination against that cancer,” Tseng said.
The team of researchers at Stanford plan on starting a small 10-100 person phase I clinical human trial of the cancer therapy in 2014.
What are your opinions about that?
My Grandfather died because of Cancer, that was however i even got to know him. My Partner in life had Breast Cancer.
Luckily it wasn't too late to save her very breast. A not close Aunt to me, died of Cancer last year.
If it works let us hope that it doesn't cost about 100k Wild-onions.
