This will complete the FF13 trilogy, making it their first finished Final Fantasy game in over 10 years. Just look back at what SE has done. They finished work that SquareSoft was already working on (like FFX-2, FFXII, etc), released 1-9 on the playstation network, made FFX and X-2 in HD, and made PSP spin off games.
Many issues in X-2 and XII were because of the transition. While XII had an excellent core, the story and characters didn't feel complete at all. The head director became ill (the creator of Final Fantasy Tactics), and the creator of the SaGa series stepped in to fill his spot. FFIX director also worked on 12, which you can find many influences from him in XII as well. While XII had many, many great strengths (areas, battle system, music, open world, other mechanics), the weaknesses it had was because of the shift in the company, the loss of both Hironobu Sakaguchi and Nobuo Uematsu as they resigned from the company, and the restructure of the team working on XII throwing new people in and removing others who were working on it for years. All these changes forced by SE itself caused the ultimate failure in XII, ruining the amazing potential of a game that could have made it to being one of the best in the series. I'm okay with it. I've come to accept that Final Fantasy will no longer be Final Fantasy. If you're still upset over Lightning Returns, you need to accept that they are not Squaresoft anymore. With that said, after I have accepted the above, I watched the cutscenes of 13 over again. It wasn't that bad of a story honesty. I do not think it is Final Fantasy material, but it wasn't as horrible as I once thought it was. I then picked up 13-2 again and started over. The first time I played 13-2 I just finished 13 with a bad taste in my mouth, which didn't help my perspective of 13-2, so I quit halfway through. I am now past the point I was before, and I'm actually enjoying the game now that I have accepted it for what it is. 13-2 didn't fix what 13 did, they did add NPCs to help form the story around you, and with datalogs and fragments you get a greater sense of the backstory as you play. 13-2 has many faults though, just as many as I'd say 13 had. While 13 had a huge issue with linearity, 13-2 uses an effect like Kingdom Hearts. I wouldn't even compare it to chrono trigger, because even though 13-2 is changing time periods the effect is completely different. It is more similar to kingdom hearts as you travel through time to reach the little world, and even though you might have an area 2-3 times in the timeline all they do is recolor it and give it a little twist. I do not like the separation of areas for 13-2. While I was a fan of both chrono and kingdom hearts, this does not work for me. Also, the music in 13-2 is some of the worst in the series. While it has many great pieces, I cannot stand the screamer music while fighting bosses and...the chocobo. Final Fantasy is not a screamer music kind of game, and having it in the game is complete disrespect for what Hironobu Sakaguchi and Nobuo Uematsu accomplished for 15 years. However, like I said, I've come to accept for what SE does, and even though I refuse to compare 13 and 13-2 to past Final Fantasy games, I've learned to find things that I enjoy about them, doing my best to ignore what I can't stand and am offended by. I am looking forward to Lightning Returns, mostly so the FFXIII story can finally end, and SE can actually complete their first game in 10 years. I might even enjoy the game, it has some good traits like open world, but it also has a bad history holding it down, and that history will influence sales so negatively. XIII sold more copies than XIII-2 did, but I put XIII-2 above XIII, even just by a hair, because of introducing NPCs back into the world. I can't stand the Chocolina shop... that isn't any different than having an internet as a shop. I miss visiting towns to see what their shops had to offer, but I don't see FFXV doing it either sadly.
