Or you could use the shout box, and copy past it into google translator... for free.

JP shouts are heavily abbreviated and filled with ffxi specific technical terms. I'd be surprised if google translate gave you anything other than a hot mess.

Additionally, most JP shouters put 50% of the pertinent information in their search comment (because of character space limitations), such as what jobs they are looking for, costs and/or what is available to lot on. Translating the shout alone, even if it were intelligible, is often only half the story.

Still, taking an interest and trying to understand a completely different meta-game is a good thing and I encourage people to try to understand other players' positions. Just don't expect it to be as simple as: copy past google translate > gg.

This being said, how would someone go about translating these shouts. Obviously learning Japanese wont help because as you said it is heavily abbreviated. So what is the alternative?

Well, actually learning Japanese would help I should think. But that's not really practical for most.

What I'm saying about google translate is that you should be aware that its actually a 3 step process:
Input JP > output gibberish > translate that into actual English.

It's that 3rd step that requires at least a basic knowledge of in game Japanese. And probably a bit of guess work.

Shall I post a few "step 2" examples are you tell me what they actually mean?

①People such as harvesting keys Coffer and «Black Mage» AF weapon NM, and He will help you Would you like to come? We tell wait

②1 person wanted Morima Night Round 3

③- You will shout rude. After confirming, the lighting please along with the job? Sachiko do not go together even six races x3 Kaggen from now

These aren't too hard, but they have a few interesting points.

The easiest way if you know absolutely NO Japanese, is to "decode" the katakana (assuming there is any) and make a guess. Just Google "katakana" and you can find a chart. If you decode the shouted katakana, and it says mo-ri-ma, you can probably tell that means Morimar, even if you don't know anything about Japanese at all. This is really limited obviously, but if you don't know any Japanese, it's the only other option apart from hoping Google translate spews out something that isn't complete gibberish. If you see "sachiko," that means "search comment", and you'd have to look at their comment to see what jobs they needed. At that point if you can find a list of the jobs in English and Japanese, you could at least figure that much out.

Actually it's exactly the opposite, if it's heavily abbreviated learning Japanese and understand the FFXI culture in JP helps. English communication is also heavily abbreviated. If someone that's new to MMO or internet he probably won't understand wth is zerg/DD/tank/lol/2hr and all that internet/MMO terms. But as he spends more time on internet/MMO he'd starting to learn and understand.

Same for JP. I can't communicate JP at all and know little JP, but I can understand many JP /shout just by observing. When B.rex was out every JP pt call it マツコ, so I get this is the neckname for B.rex.
When delve was out every JP call it メナス, so I know it's short term for Menace Inspector/delve. Then everyone looking for fodder plasm farm they put メナスメリポ on seacom at first, then it became メナポ, so I guess they combined 2 words and became new term. And every time when I see 〆 their ally(or that job spot) full and stopped recruiting, so I guess 〆 = full.

There's really not alternative nor short cut to learn except ask around, or observe and guess, or ask your JP friends what it means, which still requires studying JP anyways.

"Plasma farm, full member. Sorry to anyone I couldn't reply to. Please join us next time."

... Is a pretty close English approximation. Anyway, I hope you see what I mean about the shortcomings of google translate. Even still, understanding the shout itself is still only half the battle. I'm not sure how English only players intend to get accepted into a JP groups.

I had one friend, who could copy-paste text from other fields into ffxi. He made up some super simple phrases in JP ime that he would use to respond to JP shouts. Phrases like: "I'm job XX lvl XX, I'd like to join." Or "ok, np". Or "brb". Or "thanks for the PT, I gotta go now." Stuff like that. He made sure to check the phrases with friends that can actually speak Japanese to confirm that they were correct and natural sounding (and general enough to get away with using in various situations).

As Kiralai said, learning katakana and searching it on the JP wiki (and I'd recommend learning the 1 character abbreviations for jobs as well) would be super useful if you are looking into decoding JP shouts. It'd be a fun project and it's good motivation for self-improvement and study.

Avant-garde should have been "front liner" or DD. they want 1 DD with good acc or 1 cor (no weapon specification). Also they are doing 2 runs, and google translate consistently calls a "run" a "race". Yes to all the other stuff^^
