New Xbox Generation Revealed 21st May at 6pm.
By Jetackuu 2013-05-24 01:02:52
There was FFXI on both PS2 and 360 and for some weird reason it ran and looked better on PS2 >.>;
*edit* i dont know what the arguement is atm tbh i'm just bored :x
*edit* I'm hungry i'm going to go get some cake... that's if GlaDOS didn't lie to me about it -.-
I perceived the argument as: Still current gen until 2017 because cross-gen titles 'n' stuff.
Which could be true, I'm not a clairvoyant, I can't see the future. But I think 360 and PS3 cross-gen games will be phased out rather quickly, especially when compared to the PS2 which had ongoing exclusive development practically through this entire generation.
Some of the pessimistic analyses about "nobody's going to upgrade" are unfounded, or use the Wii U as the benchmark. Developers are ready for the next hardware standard and gamers are ready for the next Hardware standard.
I like that term better, Hardware standard, because really that's all consoles are. "Next Gen" isn't technically inaccurate, but considering PC iterates technology bi-annually at least, it's better to acknowledge the consoles as "The software must run on this, then we can scale it up for those crazy *** with Quad NVIDIA Titans."
I personally don't have a problem with the current gen of technology. I'd rather them take another 2-3 years to bring the price down than flood the market with overpriced shitty made hardware, especially with stupid *** requirements like the "one" will have.
Then wait 2-3 years after the hardware comes out. Its impossible to prove a negative so I really have no idea what you're trying to get at.
2 things:
1. how? thought the 360 version of skyrim sucked, or was that the PS version? (I don't keep up with such nonsense).
It's the PS3 version that has all the technical problems.
2. the next gen consoles will be PC's so their architecture will be more comparable from a physical standpoint, now as to what software is running it, that's another story.
Maybe we need a real wizard software engineer in here, because that sure as ***isn't me. I've got maybe a layman's understanding at best, but it's been my baseless understanding that the streamlined-for-gaming approach to the console OS's give them an immense amount of leeway with the comparatively meager resources.
I was talking of software prices not really hardware. For what the hardware is most of the time it's cheap, the software not the same case.
ah on the skyrim, never played, don't really care about it.
with the "one" having 3 "OS's" running at the same time, one of them being 8...
I'm just being skeptic really.
I have a general idea but I'm no software engineer. I understand that premise.
I do however question the use of 32bit architecture over 64bit, kind of seems like a step back imo.

Wait, I thought both the XboxOne and PS3 were using 64 bit now, Don't they have to if they're packing more than 2GB of ram? (Technically 1.5558359708726876 or whatever)
Again, not good with Software design, but don't 32 bit executable limit memory size used by an individual application to 2GBish, where 64bit is something like 16?

and everything is saying they're both x86 architecture not x64

pretty sure the limit per application would be a kernel issue

Wait, we might be talking about two completely separate things now.
I was thinking of the 3GB wall and ***. Unrelated, disregard, ***, etc.
I'm just being skeptic really.
What exactly are you being a skeptic about though? Nobody here is saying Microsoft's console is awesome and shoots the healing *** of christ on everyone who gazes at it's awesomeness. The range of excitement has labeled the XboxOne a TiVo at best and a VCR at worst, does that sound like a crowd of optimists?

Waiting for Gamespot.com to put up a Feedbackula on this. British people using sarcasm to rip apart fanboys is always fun! :D

I thought you were talking of the memory limit of 32bit Windows, which sorta can be bypassed. Most of the limitations you're speaking of are either hardware or OS dependent. (the 3.25GB limit)
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-general-1/32-bit-os-and-4gb-memory-limit-707762/
from my understanding of it, and from the KB artciles I've read, this statement on that link sums it up well:
Quote: If you do not have a PAE kernel:
1) The maximum physical ram for the kernel plus all processes is BIOS dependent, typically limited to about 3.25GB.
2) Swap space can be used to bring the effective usable memory well above 4GB. I don't know the limit.
3) Each process is limited to 3GB virtual, and the kernel is limited to 1GB virtual, so total memory use over 4GB is only meaningful for multiple processes.
If you have a PAE kernel, item (1) changes. The maximum amount of physical ram used can be over 4GB (I think up to 16GB). Items 2 and 3 don't change at all with a PAE kernel.
so exactly what they plan to do, short of allocate it to different chipsets it's hard to tell, but if they're just using one set of ram to be shared, that's probably how they'll have to do it. I couldn't grasp my head around programming enough to understand the instruction set of the intel 8085 (funny enough a cpu that NASA was still, may still be using), much less however many instructions are on one of those things. I get the concepts, and the many layers, but the skill to actually do it escapes me.
There's plenty of people that understand all the layers of that though, and pretty much what equals to easier programming for the devs means easier programming for the hackers. As to why they chose x86 over x64 I don't know though, You'd think they wouldn't want to place those address limits on themselves. Whatevs.
Oh and the skepticism was more directed to a few comments in this thread equally summing up "it's not so bad" when it sorta is.
I thought about ranting on about how game companies are dropping the loyal base that brought them to where they are in favor of sheer profit (which some don't disagree with, and even I probably can't blame them) but M$'s introduction to the arena kind of was the start of a transformation of the "gamer" from "hardcore" to more "casual."
There's some up sides to expanding markets, and then there's some down sides (X-2 anyone?) (OK I didn't hate X-2 as much as most, but after XI I haven't been able to keep interest in any FF title).
Even looking back I was never a "hardcore" gamer, I didn't get every title that came out of everything, I have my niche, I try to stick with them, and expand slowly, but it got too expensive.
Oh and people can rip on Nintendo all they want, they somehow managed to stay in the game, doing their own thing with their own IP's for this long, and even manged some expansion here and there. I give them mad props on the decision to universally accept external HDD's instead of requiring proprietary space that's limited, and trying to stick try to their fans more or less by offering backwards compatibility (I realize they dropped gamecube support on the Wii some time ago, but they kept it for longer than they had to).
There's things each company does right/wrong but in attempts to please fans over stockholders, personally I'd give it to them. Which is funny, because the Wii was the last system I obtained, and While I bought a Wii U it was a gift...

Carbuncle.Jintawk said: »Just to clarify.
Physical Address Extension (PAE) allows x86 CPU's to access more than 4GB of memory (been around since 1995). PAE can be enabled in Windows but due to Windows policy this still doesn't allow you to access more than 4GB.
A proper OS (Linux!) will allow you to access up to 64GB of ram on a 32bit OS because to PAE.
Consoles will have PAE and therefore no 4GB memory limits.
And now I know.
Was there any actual reason for that to be done? Or is Microsoft just hyperdumb?
Headshot give Microsoft too much credit. This is more along the lines of Happy Horse time with Mister Hands. (You know, the dude that totally offed himself on accident with a horse ***).
More DRM horsecock. This is actually pretty scary if it's true.

What does Sony have in terms of Exclusives?
Uncharted, Infamous, Killzone, Resistance, Ratchet and Clank, Last of Us, Tales games, Sly Cooper, God of War.
I dunno why you picked off the wall "exclusives" to prove a point, lol.
360 had a lot of exclusives to start but over the last few years, hardly much because the ones they do have are kinect titles.
Out side of Halo/Gears/Forza.. what else have they had that was worthwhile in the last few years? Alan Wake? Fable?
D: <3 That game... screw the DS "sequel". -.-

It's way too early to tell but their potential solution to DRM isn't as bad as it seems in my eyes.
From what I gather, stores such as Gamestop will have a new computer system that links to microsoft in some form. This system will allow them to take your XBO games and remove them from your account and in return charge customers for pre-owned just as we always have.
So if you went home and tried to play the game you just sold, it would probably error you and let you know that you no longer own the title. At that point you could delete the install from your hard drive.
This takes away half of my personal concern over always online DRM. This process in theory makes absolutely no differnce in my personal buy/sell/trade routine. For other people who sell on Craiglist, Ebay or Amazon type methods may have an issue still though.
I personally cannot function daily in both casual and professional life without an internet connection. So always online never posed a threat to me, but I am still completely against this 24 hour online check in. Some people are not fortunate enough to have reliable service area. Maybe they can't afford internet or television. Half of the funcationality of the system to a wide variety of people could now be considered dead.
I'm going to buy the XBO and I'll likely enjoy everything about it, but I completely understand the general population freaking out a good bit over these choices they are making.
This other new article about visual DRM is pretty in over it's head though. We don't know enough to start assuming 7 people in a room watching a netflix show will break some sort of agreement and the Kinect will see this and act upon it. Too soon to tell honestly. E3 will be really interesting this year in all aspects though this year.

None of the issues presented by the XboxOne hurt me in any way regarding my gaming habits.
I still can't *** stand them, but I'm a "Big picture" kind of person, so the idea that "Ownership" as we know it is coming to an end is horrifying.
How long until DRM is included into things like furniture?

And I wouldnt expect to see another good Gears game ever. No offense to people that are fans of the series *I personally loved 1-3* but after Judgement... yeah they should move on.
there are a lot of talented people at Epic, I'm sure they could make a new series of games, if they kept doing GoW well... it'd be a waste.
Especially after seeing their tech demos of

Here is a link to an interview they did which spoke about how they want games to function on the consoles. There are other tidbits in there as well, but down below I quoted how pre-owned games would work.
Quote: I think we will always take a customer or player centric view with this and our plans are very consistent with the way the world works today, which is if I buy a disc I can install it on my machine. I can play it and anyone associated with my machine can play it as well. I can give that disc to somebody else - maybe my son who has his own Xbox One somewhere else in the house - and he can install and play it on his machine.
I can come to your house with that disc, I can install it on your machine and we can play it and while I'm with you we can have all of the capabilities of that game. The moment I go home and notionally take that disc with me, you no longer have the ability to play that game. But the 'bits' are on your hard drive, so if you want to play that game you can buy it - you can go to the online store, buy it and it's instantly unlocked and playable on your machine. All of the privileges I just described in my house would now apply in yours as well.
So that's exactly the same as owning a physical disc, it's just the method of distributing the 'bits' slightly changes. We will have a system that will allow you to trade that ownership back in, but we're not announcing the details of that today. But we will have a system for that.
This was from the VP of MS by the way.

Tech demos are for people who spunk their pants at Call of Duty-like games. Linear Setpiece tours.
I don't have anything against set pieces in theory, but they're used as a crutch way too often. For me, I'm way more interested in killing some random village in Skyrim, stripping him/her naked, picking up the body and laying it on someone's market stall, resurrecting said body, then firing a frenzy spell on another random villager and seeing who will emerge victorious.
And the fact that you can do that at any time, anywhere is just beautiful. Way better than seeing the same building explode in the same way at the same time in the same spot every goddamn playthrough. (Battlefield 3). And don't even get me started on that lame Corsper fight in Gears1. What a *** disappointment.
Rant Summary: *** tech demos, show actual emergent gameplay.

Just so you know, both Unreal and Gears of War started out as Tech Demos.
Epic has a bad habit of turning their tech demos into actual games, only reason I brought it up XD

I personally think it works the other way around. The tech is a solution to a problem, you don't build a solution to a problem you don't have right?
I'm willing to see proof otherwise, but to me, it just makes more sense.
In other words, Epic didn't go in making a new Iteration of Unreal and say "Hey, let's make a new Gears of War with this." They go in saying "Let's make new tech, for a new Gears of War."
Then they can advertise both the licensing rights of their Engine and the new game itself. It's really clever actually.

Bleszinski isn't with Epic anymore right? A lot of people think he's just the dudebro faceman of epic, and nothing of value was lost, but the guy's insanely smart, right up there with Carmack.

He was at the helm of A LOT of great games. He might not have been the only reason they were good, but you're delusional if you think he didn't add anything.

Last of Us looks amazing. Bioshock: Infinite might have to fight for it's Game of the Year title after all. I personally didn't think GTAV had a chance because GTAIV was so overrated (Good as it was) people are going to be way more guarded on it this time.
Heavy Rain is ***. A game made by a developer who hates his medium. Btw, David Cage knows Ellen Page. AWESOME!
Anyone going to watch this just to see what Microsoft are going to do? I personally love to see if Xbox offers better or not against the PS4. Just 6 more days until the reveal!
You can watch it in the link below or watch it on Xbox Live.
(US Xbox Website)
(EU Xbox Website)
Also you can watch on Spike TV.
