[Dev] Seekers of Adoulin (Mar 13)
Foret de Hennetiel looks really cool
is it odd that the environmental animations in the trailer are really impressive to me? For FFXI that is. and the monsters are bound to have badass BLU spells!

I bet those tiny butterfly things are going to be the most annoying monster in the whole expansion. I spy, with my little eye, the next little girl to follow us around on missions.
She looks a lot more serious than the previous few. Guess that makes sense since they had Aphmau, who was demure, then Lilisette, who was all peppy.
Did anyone else notice this?
A lot of the new monsters seem like might have some interesting mechanics, particularly Umbril. Phasing through walls and floors to surprise enemies? Cool stuff.

I miss the idea of just doing Missions and Quests cuz that's what Final Fantasy is all about. Shadowstep blu spell pls

Was decent for a teaser trailer I suppose. dang it looks like my break I just started is only going to last a month or two at most :( SE knows how to keep getting their money out of me.
Admittedly, I havent been keeping up too much about whats going on with this new expansion.
Not to come off as an ***, but what in that trailer is exciting and something to look forward to? Besides new areas and new monsters I suppose. Just want to get everyone's general feedback. Honestly, having all-new areas after what...Like 6 years of not having any actual new areas (Well, unless you count Provenance) it'll be cool to run around them, and it seems like they are putting a lot of effort into the environmental animations, so there will be a lot to sightsee, assuming there isn't a ton of true sound/sight level 105 stuff to randomly donkey punch you while you're running around.
Also, new Mizuta music is always nice. Because it actually looks like they're putting effort into it. The fact that so much of it looks new and isn't just a rehash of old stuff is exciting for me. A Rune Fencer trailer will be even more exciting, though.

Given that FFXI is known for it's love of reskins and rehashing, getting to explore someplace new definitely invokes the feelings of adventure and fun that makes an MMO enjoyable. If things get stagnant you do something NEW. It's gotten to the point (like just before TAU, WotG and Abyssea in their respective eras) where there's very little to experience than one hasn't already done before many times over. Having brand new stuff to do (opposed to just trying out new-to-you jobs or trying out a different play style) will come as a definite second wind to a lot of players. Because new areas, NPC's, and actual story quests are what many people have been requesting, as opposed to general "vanilla fighting" which is what some recent events boil down to. For example, events like Voidwatch and Legion are essentially just tiered NM fight grind events hung together with a few skeletal lines of quest dialogue. The most egregious offender of which was Voidwatch, which was essentially just a tiered NM fight grind event hung together with a few skeletal lines of quest dialogue. Both Abyssea and Voidwatch are about equal in terms of story (As in, both have barely any), but they made up for it by trying to have a massive amount of battle content. The last time they did story stuff was the first 3 Kato addons which were pretty much all awful. They lacked both decent actual gsmeplay content and the story in them felt very lazy. (Still bitter about ACP, imad4eva) Lakshmi.Tanama said: » Did anyone else notice this? I think those are the Chapuli, mutant Grasshoppers :o. They do seem like they could be earlier form of Kaggen/Gaunab. I have a feeling they probably are not though. Voidwatch pretty much fails all around. Most depth in its battle mechanics came from learning the fraction of a second between 2 and 3 to press my ws macro
@Kincard, Weren't the add-ons handled by a different director/team than WoTG? They were indeed terrible, but I viewed them as mere outliers compared to the expansion-based story quests.

Well the content was done by basically the same team but the story was all penned by a single guy- Masato Kato (He also wrote Nations/RoZ I think). You might know him as the guy who wrote Chrono Trigger/Cross, which is why I was as disappointed with those as I was. In interviews he had basically said he had numerous limitations placed on him story-wise in order to service the gameplay aspect. I'm willing to believe he had something far more grand planned for ACP but it got screwed up for the sake of a bunch of dumb fetch quests. Voidwatch is actually more complex than Abyssea is since Abyssea is just "proc yellow/red/blue depending on monster, kill", as opposed to Voidwatch where the battle is constantly changing to make you use a variety of abilities. At least Abyssea was fun to do and actually dropped items more than once every second solstice. 6~10k WSs ftw
First order of business will be to find some of these:
... and punch them til they die! I bet they make cool dying sounds. i wonder if they're gonna be like pixies with a dark side. the description for them makes them sound like a mix of both benevolence and malevolence
I noticed the cricket looking mobs and some new beastmen that look very similar to an Orc. Whats up with that Elvaan with pink hair? lol.
New hairstyles?! Who am I kidding, that guy is probably the villain. I liked the music in the first trailer though. Seemed like the battle music for the expansion pack zones. I miss the narrator. Masato Kato wrote ACP!? I've seen what that guy is capable of seeing as I still don't understand all that went on in Chrono Cross. You're probably right about him being limited by the game itself but how could whatever he wrote get turned into...that?

You're probably right about him being limited by the game itself but how could whatever he wrote get turned into...that? He was drunk apparently cause ACP is a black spot on SEs usually above-average storytelling abilities. ACP had one simple goal: Reunite Aldo and his sister and managed to *** that up royally. Before people figured out Visions/Abyssea in general, it was quite fun actually. The whole sense of adventure was there.
Hopefully Seekers will bring that back, might even get me to come back (again). Could be a good b-day present for me Hopefully they will be able to add gear that is worthwhile to get in this new expansion.
Story missions are great and I really did love doing them, but will need that carrot to hang for most players to find it worthwhile. |
