I love auto-translate. It has served it's purpose very well over the years.
There's a few phrases that have been a mystery to me for a while, and maybe for others.
"(Time Remaining)?" - Every once in a while, when I send this to a non-english player (say when i'm scouting Dynamis zones), I get a "Huh?" or "I don't understand.". I typically think they're trolling me as whatever it may translate to, Aby should have nearly everyone used to it.
"(Excuse me...)" - Does this translate to "Sorry, my mistake.", "I farted." or "Can I borrow a second of your time?"
I'm sure others have wondered about certain phrases, though I'll dispel the mystery behind one ;). "{May} {bee}" does not mean possibly! Clearly, I know how that translates in other languages, [Month] [insect], but I've always wondered what foreign players must think when someone says it.

I have no idea why the word "maybe" isn't in the auto-translate to be honest, it really should be. Saying <May> <Bee> is HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE - don't people realise it makes no sense when translated?
Also, <Are you alone?> is the creepiest auto-translate phrase ever. When would you even use that?

Same reason that Female Hume's RSE pants look the way they do.

Yes, 'Maybe' should be in auto translate. It's baffling that they thought of things like "Who is the leader?" when "Leader?" works fine but there's a few phrases we've always lacked like "Wait" or "Please wait." while "/wait" works, it doesn't always.

I think stop gets the point across, but stop is also in the auto-trans, so it must be a situational difference.
edit: grammar

I always wondered if <clear mind> was in reference to the job trait instead of clearing an obstacle. Then I've also thought that we use it so much jp probably understand what we mean by now.

It all depends on how the jps see it like <reward>(pet gift in jp) and <reward:> and <nice to meet you> is their way of greeting someone and not <hello>. I was in a jp ls for most my 75 endgame life you pick up on stuff like this.

Of course it's referring to the job trait... I don't tell people we're going to clear mind things. If the translation referred to clearing an event, they would obviously just use the word <Clear>.

but yeah Are you alone is pretty sketchy. Next step would be "what are you wearing?" <It puts the lotion on its skin...>

Always thought "Are you alone?" was used(Or supposed to be used) to see if there were mobs around the player being asked or something.
No one has ever used it for that ever though I imagine.
(May) (Bee) bugs(!) the hell out of me, but the people using it are probably getting their point across by now. (Clear Mind) recently is getting annoying to see as well, can't imagine it translates to anything close to what they are thinking.
If you just put I-IV people will understand, no need for wrong translations.
(Excuse me...) has to be "Can I have a moment of your time." Sumimasen or something?

There is a auto trans of a period and a star, that is weird!

Yes, I can't imagine how {Clear Mind} ever became anything, though A/T has need (Full Clear) for a long long time.
What the game always needed, was the ability for players to maintain A/T. There are enough bilingual players that care (or there used to be anyway) that many many necessary phrases could have been covered. Players could even handle the approval process.
"Full Win" has been submitted. Elmer has claimed it translated to '完全勝利' (Thank you Google Translate!), is this correct and clear of SHENANIGANS?
~more or less.

Quoting from an old thread, pretty damn funny.
There's also a tech issue, here. Because of the way Japanese input is done through the IME in multiple conversion stages, the "auto-complete" feature of the auto-trans is unreliable and often useless.
NA players: imagine if you had to actually type out "Thanks for the offer, but I'll have to pass." every time before you could hit Tab and tokenize it as autotrans? And if you missed the comma, or the period, or the capitalization, it wouldn't recognize it?
What if it wasn't even that? What if it was subtly awkward or bad grammar because it was written by Japanese developers, and you have to remember to not just type it perfectly, but remember it's actually "The offer is my thanks, but passing on this I will have to accomplish?"
Not only that, but what if when the other side responded to you, the translation was so bad that "Please invite me" came out as "Please stick it in?" (That's the actual JP version of that autotrans token, by the way.)
Would you be wild about using it? Probably not. And what would be your reaction if Japanese players called you "lazy" and "racist" for not doing so?

The JPs aren't stupid, I mean c'mon, most of them have to learn a least some in school. They either know what it means or have a very good idea of what it means after playing this game for how many ever years. Most just pretend to act ignorant simply not to deal with it anymore. Let's stop kidding ourselves and pretending we are so rude for using the auto translate that was put in game to communicate with others. But most others refuse to even try to use it to communicate with us.

And most are decent enough to reply. Most of them are friendly.
You talk like all jps have always been playing this game, but I'm sure they get new players just as we do. It's not impossible, especially given the information in this thread about how bad A/T is, that someone doesn't understand "(Time Remaining)?".
The big one for me was "Excuse me...", I've always wondered about it because it has a few meanings for us.
I found this, and got my answer lol
