blinker bots, and entire linkshells who farm cruor all day ruined it for us. We have a couple of shells on Bahamut who cruor farm "minimum 8 hours a few nights a week" if you want to join them. They all had 2-3 mules there each.

question, how much less efficient was converting via perle etc... also this should have a pretty profound effect on the price of rubicund cells

Oh, no doubt. On Leviathan we had dozens of anon, naked, taru mules in Vunk constantly trading to anon, naked, galkas who would warp out and return non-stop for days on end.
I'm surprised they got the armor too and not just blinkers. I guess the nerf hammer salted the earth for cruor-gil npcing.
I look at the option to change crour into gil a decade gift to the players for at least having ffxi lasting for 10 years. After 7-8 years of playing without a good source of gil, I believe having this kind of source for gil for 2-3 years is a godsend.
