Would you do it all over again?

It would be really hard to do what I did with other players a second time, it was so well timed.
I would rather never touch this game again and just stop before pre-ordering it than try to do everything a second time. I don't regret the past 8 years, and I most likely won't regret the years to come.
Though I have to agree, the game is really boring nowadays, though it's mostly due to me becoming a big casual :(

I don't even have the nerve to level and gear a new job in this day and age, so no I don't think I could handle starting over.

I'd do it again if my husband did. I wouldn't do it alone, though. And if I did re-do it, I'd do some things differently. I'd be a hume instead of a mithra, I'd level my synthing skills early, I'd level all my jobs to 50 minimum (and do all the AF quests), I'd avoid certain people that I liked then that I know now are bad news, I'd get closer to certain people that I liked then that quit because I'd know I only had limited time with them. Stuff like that.

I would wake up and upon realizing it was all a dream: Sell my PC and quit drinking, then I would go outside and take up climbing or something physical and demanding that my body could cope with as an early Twenty-something, as opposed to an early Thirty-something who is past it.

A huge part of me wishes I had never picked up this game in a battered box in a bargain bin in Virgin Media all those years ago. But if I had know then I would probably have got it anyway. Even though I know I have waisted a lot of my life I have made some great friends and had great times in this game over the years. I would perhaps try to have a life outside of the game but we all know that wouldn't happen. XI4Life

Even if I didn't start playing six years ago, I probably would have just ended up playing some other mmo or console games long enough to keep me inside and away from the run of the mill things most 20 year olds did in 2006.
A lot of the time I say things like "Gawd, I wish I knew how to quit you" but I know that I'd just end up being bored without the game to get on two or three times a week depending on work/school.
So I'd do it again and probably have a little more fun because it would be less of a struggle since I'd be able to exploit economy based on the knowledge I'd have.
Also, 6 years of XI is cheaper to play than 6 years of buying new PS2 or PS3 games every month or every other month. In a way, XI has saved me money lol

580 days of playtime, that's more than a year omitted from my lifetime sitting in front of a game. This ***sucks would not do again.

Only if I could time travel; starting from scratch as a 29 year old professional is very different from doing it as a 21 year old college student.

If I started over I would cut out all of the missions except for COP and RoZ, and I would prolly stop RoZ after finishing Divine Might. So many of those were a waste of time then, even moreso now. I could never go through WoTG again, ***sucked. And the level cap quests would be a pain in the *** as well. I really didn't enjoy questing at all.
I would also only open like 5 or 6 advanced jobs, and only have 2 or 3 99s. That said, most of my friends are gone, so I will likely never play XI again unless I can buy an account for like 50 bucks at most.

Probably not. FFXI brought nothing of value to my free time until it was almost 8 years old.

I'd have to say yes, I would do it all again. To this day, it has been the only PC game to keep my attention for more than a couple months. In fact, i'd go as far as saying, FFXI may be the best game I ever played.
I met some great people along the way, and would welcome the opportunity to meet many more.
I'd use my knowledge of events yet to come, level monk as my first job and totally get it as top notch as I could. I'd also probably create a linkshell of my closest friends and using my knowledge, together we would rule the galaxy!

The thought of being all-knowingly godlike on FF sounds great.. but somehow I'm inclined to believe no one would give a ***about what I'd say and they'd just laugh. Only things I'd get would be the pain of repeating everything and the nice idea of knowing I could say, "I told you so" in the end. ....which isn't enough for me. Quite frankly, I'd be happy with the fact I'd be able to correct a good amount of mistakes I've made along the way in FF. That.. and 'extra' years to live are always welcomed.

I would not do it all over again because I would know that all of my friends that I had so many great chats with night after night would end up going away. I had more fun helping others and being all altruistic than I did going for my own e-peen numbers. I would /not/ do it over again. I would rather be a fresh-faced young cute 23 year old with happy thoughts ahead of me and a /real life/ than a grumpy cynical 33 year old that has nothing to show for the time they spent other than the memories which are eroded by time anyway. Oh yeah. I probably could have had a career or a family or both and/or could have perfected an art or instrument with all the countless hours I played FFXI.
No. Never again.
Never.
I could play FF Tactics of IV on my PSP for a few hours and get the satisfaction I got out of the 'game play' of FFXI. The friends though. It's hard to deny that pretty much everyone reading this will have some idea but, we are not our grandparents generation. There is a different way of socializing these days. A lot of it is just text-based.
For example: When I got home tonight, I could hear my room mate chatting with his buddies over voice chat. I have no idea what game he plays. I don't even want to bother asking. I think his name is Josh. He's lived her 19 days and I /guess/ his name is Josh. If this were the 1950's or '60s or something, I do believe I would have at least met him enough to know his name other than to see him in passing in the hall. This person sleeps like 5 yards from me. Actually... getting weirded out now and side-tracked. Gonna go buy a lock on my day off today. >.<

One thing I would do firstly get more irl info on all the friends I miss. I would level pup because in later years I would move away from my mage life. Actively do missions and such as they were released. And probably help the people that actually helped me more and also never hang around the douchbags that I wasted my time with.

I remember seeing a simple quote, and I think it's a bit applicable and relevant to this thread:
Quote: Never feel regret for anything, because at some point in time, it was exactly what you wanted.

I like this game. Granted, I have spent much time on it. I have met some wonderful people in game. I cherish them as much as I do my RL friends.

If I had a do-over, it's hard to say what I'd do differently. I've loved this game since day one, and there are so many experiences that I wouldn't want to give up. I'd spend more time with the friends that I've seen quit over the years and I'd get their out of game contact info and stay in touch. I'd use what I know now to gear myself better and have more gil so I could spend more of my in-game time with those friends and less of it farming, etc.

Id do it again just because I met my girlfriend on here.
Only thing I'd change is to not waste my time on some people.

I think it's funny that you say stuff like the game is truely the same in its battle mechanics as it is now, back then. Accuracy used to truely be a problem for damage dealers, and we didn't have ***for haste gear. All fights went more slowly in general. That aside, I'd still try to convince people to fight better mobs/weaker/lower HP mobs knowing the layout of the game like I do now, or at least take people around to more than the cookie cut camps we all used to use.
I'd keep my Imperial Standing high for Perdu weapons and grip price abuse.
I'd level Red Mage and tank with it in the place of Warrior waaaay back when.
I'd of taken Monk up sooner and gotten interested in Salvage sooner.
I also would of snapped my brother out of his depression sooner and had him reactivate my account again after its only hacking. I got it back, but it was in his name, so SE wanted him to call them etc. He refused to play FFXI for 5 months though, and didn't want to talk about it, until one day I snapped on him. It got him out of his rut too. I wish I'd done it sooner.
That first week the 2handed update was out, would of taken a ton of SAMs to Sea, like 50 or something HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE and had them all super alliance zerg AV or some ***. ***was ridiculous. My friend Lianna was consistently doing 1100 Gekkos on Mamools at the old camps with freakin' Soboro.
I would of leveled SAM sooner in the old days so I could of been more useful as a DD if needed. I mean, my WAR was the ***, but just couldn't really help much on Kirin/other kite/HNM due to the need to build TP outside of meleeing etc.
Let's say you wake up, aside from economy(you forget anything at all dealing with price), you have all current knowledge of the game, and anything you did in this game was a dream.
Would you start over?
Would it be fun to play knowing all the stuff we know now that we didn't then? You could potentially be the best player on your server, on all servers with current knowledge on how to gear.
Would you be too impatient to play in the game, waiting for a lot of the awesome updates we've gotten? (Could you go back to your 2handed job, years before the 2handed update was even thought of?)
How would you try to influence old events/ways of thinking (before paresers and such, spike damage was considered the best damage and a DoT job like MNK was thought to be shit tier; exp'ing on mobs that took a long ass time to kill and utilizing skillchain/magic burst was thought to be the best exp, rather than going for mobs that yielded a bit less exp, but could be killed much faster and easier chained).
Etc. etc.
If you could start over with all of your current knowledge, would you and if so, how would you do things differently. What knowledge would you share and what would you keep to yourself. Would you tell everyone, or just people in your ls so that you guys could further pull ahead of everyone else.
Just thought it'd be interesting to see how people would play the game in this fashion
