Ok so this father found out his son was gay, and didn't turn out well. However, what man, what human feels the need to deliver rejection via letter just baffles me...then what he says in the letter...

Dad Disowns Gay Son In Shockingly Simple Goodbye Letter

I'm not trying to tell the man how to be a parent. It's simply salt with lemon on the wound imo.

This is worse than when Britney Spears divorced Kevin Federline via text!

Idk... does it really make it better if you do it to their face? When did it become a rule that you must do something face to face? I mean it's pretty shitty in general that you find it necassary to disown your own kid but yea...

Wow. It is heart breaking that someone could take their own child and all their memories, connections, and love for them and sever them like they were cutting a cable service.

No matter what your beliefs are, you must admit that no human being should be treated that way by their own family.

I was being sarcastic regarding the dad's delivery.

I'm just horrified by the letter. I can't believe what this man says.

To do this or anything of this magnitude in a letter, text, e-mail, etc degrades the person by basically saying that "I am severing you, the human being I helped form from my own body, and it means about as much to me as a mass produced newsletter."

Coulda been worse. I can think of at least one reason he would do it through a letter instead of in person or over the phone that doesn't have to do with being a coward. Maybe the father knew he wouldn't be able to say goodbye without getting angry or cussin him out or whatever.

If the father is that devoutly Christian, that he'd cut his own son from his life over it, then the son is probably better off. Beats having his father constantly hounding him trying to 'save him'.

Well... I don't really think any human being should disown/hate any other human being just for being who they are...

Over the years though I've come to realize that relying on a familial bond isn't something you can always do... I know we've been raised to think that family should be this safe and cozy place we can always retreat to or that should at least be the ones that treat us with some common decency but it just isn't always that way... some people get screwed and end up with a family that does more harm than good... thing is you just can't rely on blood as much as you would like to...

Many people find their "family" outside of their bloodline...

He's going to have issues over this for life now. I find his fathers abandonment both cowardly and plain wrong.

I'd venture to guess he's just ashamed.

From being in a situation like this, I don't find this to be that heart-breaking. Maybe I am too apathetic towards family values. But all I gotta say is, "his loss."

Idk... when I get a handwritten letter from someone I always like it... they took the time to write and send that to me...

granted in this case I'm sure not many would be too excited to get that letter...

but like I was saying before... blood isn't always thicker than water... and many people don't take parenthood seriously... if they even wanted to be parents in the first place... not pretty but it's reality...

He shouldn't have had a kid to begin with. Children arn't meant to disown or abandon when ***doesn't go your way. Ask any parent- kids always through you curve-balls growing up, its part of being a parent.

Letters at least give some evidence or indication that the person writing it put some personal effort into whatever it was they were writing, while typing it out or texting it has the stigma of being impersonal and thoughtless; mostly because of the instantaneous nature of it.

But alas, I'm already derailing. The father's an *** no matter how he delivers such ***.

I guess my view is biased because I was blessed/gifted (whatever you want to call it) with a warm, loving family and I see them as the most important thing in my life.
I do understand though that there are so many people who have families that aren't very good, but it has always been my experience that families are that safety net, there are just a great number of horrid families.

It's possible (I kinda doubt it.. but it's possible) but so is what I proposed. It's easy for things to get heated 'in the moment' and say things you don't want to say even if you are disowning your own son.

Don't get me wrong though, I'm not here to defend the father..

True, very true. I just see letters as impersonal tbh.

But yes, no matter how he said it, he still said it.

Because I didn't jump on the band wagon of "*** that dad! He's a worthless piece of ***" I somehow missed the point?

Also if your point isn't the fact that he did it through a letter, then don't title the thread 'Via letter'.. You can title it something more pertinent to the discussion you want like "Father disowns son for being gay".

I cannot agree with you. I no longer do anything with a cousin of mine outside of work. I all but raised him, was the best man at his wedding, and treated him like my little brother (but closer). He took his wife back who had cheated on him and I lost all respect for him. I still can't look him in the eye when he talks to me. I'm not bragging and I'm not proud of it but he was the closest person in my life.

That's kinda how I'm reading this letter. Especially how he writes it. It's kinda like "i want the final word in this discussion, and no no don't you be calling me" when he says "don't expect any further conversations with me".

I just don't get how saying "hey son, now that I know you're gay I no longer want to be in your life" is better or worse using any method to convey the message... I mean do you honestly expect someone to care how that comes off? They just disowned their son... do you think he's worried about the method in which he conveys it? Do you think it's going to make it easier for the kid if he's told to his face or something?

I think it makes you less of a man, less of a human. As chauvinistic as that sounds. Have a family member deliver the news, or even a phone call or something not tangible. Particularly with your child. Letters/Emails/Texts are very impersonal imo- your entitled to think differently. It's kinda like if someone dies. I personally wouldn't t want a text/email/letter telling me "hey mike umm your son died" I'd want that news delivered in person or phone-call.

It's also as if this dad wanted him to have something tangible to really drive the knife counter-clockwise and remember him by.

But that's kinda off topic- main point the father's an ahole.

I'm pretty sure that was the core message of Jesus. Or at least that's what I remember from all those Sundays in church as a kid.
