PS2 users

You really shouldn't say can't. That's really setting your bar pretty low. The fact is they can, but refuse too because they would lose out on a decent sized portion of their JP PS2 users.
You should read on this guys post. Had some nice points about why PS2 should be dropped and or what they could do just to overall make the game better.
Linkie
no it's because the strategy wouldn't be cost effective, it would a bad business decision, no company is going t invest millions to lose money on purpose, so yes they can't within reason.
Again: the only purpose dropping the PS2 would serve is to overhaul the engine, which isn't going to happen as also stated.
You honestly don't wish at all. Even in the slightest, XI revamped with HD graphics? None? nodda? :/ this makes me sad.

If there's 1 thing they could afford to recode, it's the POL to FFXI imho. I say that as i'm not a fan of pol and the billing sucked when it was around and sometimes the extra procrastination could be avoided with a simple log in screen like 14 D:
lol that would be awesome. Not many really use the chat rooms either except doing maintenance I suppose. Someone in that link I posted earlier said maybe they should just remove pol all together. Maybe log on strait from the website. (But that would include having to dump PS2 again.. oh no, I'm going get attacked again for saying that)

I wish they hadn't abandoned pol and would have made it to what it was supposed to be.
I am glad they finally added direct CC transactions, until then I missed it. I don't miss however that stupid verified visa crap.
But as it is now, yeah dropping POL would be awesome.

I could wish it all I want, it doesn't mean it's going to happen, you seem to confuse wishes with reality.
what point are you trying to make?
I could see them making a login server that bypassed the need for POL, but as it is with it being how everything is installed, they'd have to report it to PC, and they could do this while leaving the current system intact, as it's just logging in, and server credentials.

I'm a true graphic designer... you know... with an actual degree, graduated during this winter actually. Nobody appreciates and respects graphics, advertisements and the design aspects of an advertising campaign more than me. Also I'm 28.
But nice of you to bring me in personally and attempt to belittle on things you yet again know nothing about.
Also one of my favorite games right now is Battlefield 3 which utilizes one of the most advanced gaming engines to date (Frostbite 2). This game PROPERLY utilizes superior graphics while maintaining quality game play.
This is a TRUE graphics engine feat. Something worth mention that actually performs as good as it looks. The GUI and menu system in Battlefield 3 is also a modern marvel.
Here is a fun fact, the PS3 and Xbox 360 actually hold this game's development back and frostbite 2 wasn't even intended for current gen consoles at all. It can only support a shorter number of vehicles, terrain objects, and a maximum of 24 players due to the strain placed on the console (which can house up to 64 players in a single game with double the amount of vehicles and terrain objects on PC)
Graphic engine updates and code rewrites have NO place in FFXI. It will waste money, drop the player base and ultimately shut the servers down in the long run.

Suddenly it's illegal to talk about wishes and dreams. /wrists

You're so full of hate. Rawr
You won't get many clients treating people that way. Good luck in your journey as a graphic designer.

If my clients can't understand simple economics and respect a proper business decision, I would turn them away politely anyways. I don't need the business of people who refuse to understand SIMPLEST things.
Example: I once declined a website contract because they demanded an adobe flash functional website that could be viewed on all mobile devices. When I explained that HTML5 is the closest I could do for cross platform they ignored the warning and wanted to argue. I had to physically showcase a flash website on THEIR iphone to show them that it wouldn't work properly because apple products lack a flash player.
I could have taken that client for a $2000 contract but denied them because they refused to listen to my suggestions for an HTML5 layout versus the outdated Adobe Flash route. If I'm full of hate because I understand every physical boundary of the industry, as well as FULLY understand a GOOD business decision versus a bad one then so be it.
To put point blank, if you were in charge of FFXI you would have put it out of business well before TOAU was even a fleeting thought. You make Tanaka look like the love child of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love right now.

They are doing something along those lines to FF14 as we speak. Completely altering the game to 2.0. Entirely new graphics engine, slightly different game play. Greatly altered mechanics. All currently paying playing players wont quit. They are going to accept the change because it's for the better!
I myself can not wait for the change :P
Whoa that's a tongue twister. Paying playing players!

I don't want to sit here and argue with you. I liked the short time I spent on FFXIV. Monk was fun to play and the Ifrit fight was alright.
But your about to learn first hand what happens when you invest millions of dollars into a code rewrite and it brings VERY few new players to the table. Legacy was an attempt to keep players paying for another 3 months... LITERALLY life support.
I don't see how a code rewrite and graphic engine changes will undo the damage already done by its horrible launch and inception into the MMO world. It's extremely rare you ever see a company approve an ordeal like this 2.0 they are attempting to do.... and there is a good reason for it.
The success rate of XIV and the subscriber base speaks for itself. I noticed the other day that they introduced "Relic Weapons"... most of which held the same name from the FFXI relics. It's a desperate attempt to win the XI crowd over and throw things we loved about XI into XIV. It's desperate feeling just like the hopes of 2.0 and legacy.
--HOWEVER--
On the flip side of things if FFXIV 2.0 manages to come out and triple the amount of content out of the gate. Then in a short period of time announce an expansion, we might have a slim slim chance of the game being a long term success. There is a FINE line on the margin of error for this being a success... and with millions of dollars on the line I honestly feel a bit wary of Square Enix's future. They already announced a huge loss of profits last year: http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/12/square-enix-braces-investors-for-extraordinary-losses-in-last/
I sometimes wish Squaresoft never merged with Enix. Mostly because they ruined the Star Ocean series... But mostly because they may take Enix down with the ship should it give out.

It's already been noted that alot of players have come back to FFXIV and I'm constantly becoming more aware of people who will play when 2.0 comes out. That part is personal findings though. FFXIV started up terribly, and in order to get back on it's feet lead has been given a shift. They have indeed tried to make the game play a little more like XI. That was smart on their behalf. Like I myself, would enjoy the game to be like XI 2.0 but with the better graphics.
I feel a promising outcome once 2.0 is released, but the only way to find out is post release.

Because relic weapons haves an entirely new names and design but Bravura and Sphairai. But the rest is original. Yoship stated that he wants to make the game to look different than ffxi. Your just posting random stuff with no knowledge like a ffxi fanboy on denial or something.

I never said they used different races.
But that argument will fall when patch 2.0 releases with 2 new races and customizations

The players coming back is the result of a smart marketing team for one. For two it's the genuine approach Square Enix is taking as a whole. Being apologetic and honest on the MANY MANY MANY MANY mistakes made from beta onward. They want to make it right and the concept art and future road map they planned look promising no doubt.
Offering someone a Legacy discount for subscribing for 3 months prior to the launch of 2.0 was a smart business move. It gives them revenue to continue development while getting players to show interest again.
All of this was very well planned out in the comfort of Square Enix headquarters I'm sure.
But lets look at the drawback of what just happened amidst the current conversation. People come back to FFXIV and play for awhile. The main things to do in the game are level all jobs and crafts. Unlock all 80+ telepoints and complete as much of the main storyline you can. Finish all the sidequests and complete the ifrit/garuda fights. That leaves you with obtaining newer job stones, AF and now relic weapons.
Lets examine the timeline.
2.0 Will not be until November-January of 2013. They have so much filler content planned between now and then I doubt they are going to have enough content to satisfy the masses come 5-6 months later. It's going to be a reworked graphics engine and tweaked game play mechanics. This is also when the new FFXI expansion is supposed to come out at some point in 2013.
I can't speak for the entire FFXI player base. Nor can I speak for the entire FFXIV player base. But do you honestly think people will be much interested in FFXIV revamp over a new "boxed" aka 5th full expansion that looks to let most of us relive the ToAU fresh off the boat days?
It's arguable... but the hardcore player base in my opinion will either stick with FFXI as a whole... or find a new game to play entirely. I hope FFXIV proves me otherwise but the lame attempts to life support their product and then throw in jobs, artifact armor and now relic weapons from FFXI is crossing into dangerous territory.
By Latifah 2012-06-23 07:16:30
2.0 alpha and beta testings access will be on september/october for legacy members, perhaps it will keep ff14 users while the 2.0 fully releases on november.
But a lot of ffxi people are switching or playing other games because ffxi have nothing to offer atm, the new expan will come on 2013... I expect a server merge for ffxi before 2013 Maybe...
Guildwars2 will pull a lot subs from both games.

And I won't actually deny your attempt to play me on as a "FFXI fan boy". It's been a pretty huge part of my gaming past and I've tried several several times to find other MMO's or online games in general to pull me away. Yeah the game is really stale right now with voidwatch, legion and rehashed content. But it has offered some of the best entertainment during my early college years ect. No game has the depth and feel of FFXI.
But I also purchased the collectors edition of FFXIV and gave it not one... not two... but THREE good run throughs to keep me interested.
On my third run through I actually played an entire 30 days and somewhat enjoyed the time on there. But there was no depth and reason to keep playing. Am I supposed to believe that more FFXI related content and a graphic engine update are supposed to save the game? Forgive me for being beyond skeptical. If I wanted to play something that resembled FFXI, I would simply play FFXI. The ifrit, garuda, and all dungeon runs are NOWHERE near remotely as fun as sky, sea, salvage, nyzul, einherjar or even ground kings offered. Not even close by a milestone.
The one thing FFXIV has the destroys FFXI is the playerbase and community, especially the FFXIVpads website which I got to know and use really well during my 30 days. People on there are polite, helpful and downright good people. I never seen flame wars or macho-centric attempts to belittle people all over the place for gear or questions. It's the FFXIAH of FFXIV without 99% of the drama in short. But I think that the FFXI community has aged to a point of old men screaming at eachother over frivolous things. We've become too "pro" at the game and treat it like an old muscle car while screaming at the kids to stay off our lawns.

Just more work they would have to either dump or change over to the new system.

I really wish you people would get your common sense factor switches repaired! FFXI is only worth playing on PS2/3 or xbox! It isnt nearly worthy of being played on pc! Anyone who think it is apparently isnt a true gamer! If PS2 does actually get axed, Ill be forced to sell all my gil and play a better game! Maybe WoW or Diablo 3, aka games that are worth a ***! The dumbass japanese cant realize that when you charge the same price to play the game but dont give the game potential to pay for itself, its not worth playing! Common sense, you can have this!

They been working on content for over 1 year and half for FFXIV. There two team one for FFXIV 1.0 and FFXIV 2.0 the 2.0 team been hard at work at making crystal towers and adding more quest, storyline voice over and other content for the game. So it going to have enough for a long time even a 24 man raid is getting added.

SO SO much disagreement tonight >_<;
I think that the FFXIV team is too busy concerning themselves over the graphic engine update and tweaks to the game mechanics. I don't want to assume how much knowledge you have of game design or the process needed to make these levels of changes right now.
They may have a roadmap BEYOND the current roadmap. But to think they will have triple the amount of content at the exact release of 2.0 will be a large disappointment to you probably. Once 2.0 is released they will most likely give us a new plan of action with breakdowns and information just as they have above.
They are barely... for lack of better term... un-***-themselves at this point in time and trying to turn the ship around completely, which is very possible but it may be too slow to save it in the long term which is my concern as outlined and described previously. I'm at no extent wishing for XIV to fail nor do I hate it. But god... what a... hot hot hot hot mess this has been for them.

I have been in your same foot steps, playing this game since 2004 and used to be a huge ffxi fan, and searching for new games to disconnect myself from ffxi ... But not anymore, I guess i got tired of Tanaka and the lot system/drop and the graphics. But what made me really quit is the current endless loop that the game haves atm. Once you do the basics.. the only thing to do on the game is basically emps or relics. I hope that will change with this new expan
FF14 got really good since the patch 1.22+, i took a long break and came back when it released (i was still playing ffxi by that time) I'm a collector's edition too. i currently play ff14 fulltime atm since January. I like it a lot. But the main reason that keeps me playing is because i have big hopes that 2.0 patch will be successful. Maybe because yoship is not narrow minded like tanaka and knows a lot from mmos and used to be a hardcore age of camelot player.

I like how it was mentioned that he forced his developers to play other MMOs to have them understand what the majority of MMO players look for in a game. Thinking outside the box can never go wrong.

Here's my thing.
I've never seen anyone do what Square Enix did. They literally wrote an open apology to the FFXIV players and the world. Made a plan of action and made it happen.
I can't even imagine the amount of money lost in the profit margins of the game yet they allowed a second chance for redemption. ANY other game developer would have pulled the plug on the servers and abandoned ship.
I as a player appreciate the sincerity and honesty of people such as Yoship who valiantly want to turn this thing around. But I don't feel cramming XI related content down XIV's throat is what people had in mind. It feels forced and unnatural.
They messed up from day 1 in my opinion by adding the same exact races from FFXI but just renaming them to random garble. What about all the other races that existed in FF history... Viera for example (aka the bunny girls). Replace mithra with them. That's just one example of the MANY varieties of races out there.
Sure it appeals to the XI crowd some, but meh.
One of my most beloved moments in FFXI was stepping off the ship and into Aht Urghan for the first time. The sights, sounds and just overall everything. It feels like this new expansion will have the exact same lasting effect and it's fairly exciting to me. XIV just kinda feels like a place you've been before after a remodel lol.

Just a fun comment about RAMBUS RAM...
The industry (Mostly Intel, AMD and the DRAM manufacturers) were pissed by how RAMBUS handled the IP pertaining the memory access protocols and bus timings. DDR SDRAM (Of the type used on PC3200 DIMMs) is still slower than RDRAM of same type. What the memory makers did was widen the bus to through a longer bus achieve faster transfers.
You end with a memory module which needs eight eight-bit chips (64 bit) to achieve the exact performance a pair of eight bit RDRAM chips (3.2 GB/second).
This is fact. While the end result doesn't matter, (you need the 64 bits memory bus on a modern PC to have it start) the real underlying engineering on this stuff gives Jetackuu reason.
Also, the PS2 had a STUPID video memory bandwidth of 39GB per second (wtf you need that much for if you can't pull that much data from mass storage ? lol you need a RAID ARRAY to be able to pull half of that much data today... lol)
I'm not defending the PS2 this time, just pouring information here.
The PS2 is dated and I'd say it will be taken down eventually, when SONY decides it no longer want to keep the DNAS service the game requires for authentication and DRM control (yes, FFXI has DRM on PS2. DNAS main purpose is DRM)

You are right about that. Gridania is like Windurst. Limsa is like Sandy. Uldah is like Bastok. Similar races also. I've always just told myself that there will be much more to come and it's kept me going I guess. One of the major things I enjoy about XIV is how they seamlessly combined something from nearly if not all every Final Fantasy game. Rememberable equipment from 4. Bosses from 3. Magicite Vanguards ect. The story line hasn't even been scratched at all yet! The story of the world being parted between us and the imperials is sure to bring about an epic story line, as it once has before. Completed all of the main story and all of the GC quests so far. You can just feel that whatever is coming next is sure to be amazing. The story line so far has me hooked. The amazing facial expressions, music and amazing graphics. Put all together... It's just great. One thing I really do wish though is they put in voice acting into 2.0 and beyond. I can understand them not doing it now before the make over. Maybe in the future. One can hope I guess.
I loved all of the story lines in XI also. Wish they would have never ended.
I haven't noticed any uproar over this but has anyone noticed that on the teaser site that PS2 isn't listed as a supported system?
