That is an absolutely amazing card. I can't speak any ill of the one I had aside from the temperature, but that isn't a huge deal.

Also I'm not sure if all 480s are like this, but my EVGA one had some intrusive copper pipes that made it amazingly hard to find an aftermarket VGA cooler that would fit on it.

Pretty sure it is just the reference design 480 in general.

But good luck finding anything but the reference eVGA now.

This is what the PC is looking like:

$100 over what I'd like to spend, but I'm sure it's a good investment, I'll just have to save up a little more..

You really really need low profile RAM if you want that heatsink to fit properly.

As far as chipset, AMD mobo's are more often than not ATI/Crossfire, and Intel are nVidia/SLi, it's hard to find quality mobo's that go against that for each respectively.

You should be able to SLI just fine on an AMD board or CrossfireX on an intel board.

What? I'm pretty sure most current and last-gen motherboards on both intel and amd support both sli and crossfire...

If you don't plan on overclocking at all, you'll be better off with a locked intel over the FX series. These were basically designed to overclock.

I probably will overclock, as I'm looking to run FFXIV on MAX settings.
If you're going to over clock go for the i5 2500k and a mobo that can handle overclocking, i wouldn't recommend turning ambient oclusion on ff14 it will destroy your gpu even if you get 60 fps (cap). Because you said that want play on max setting, but features on the game are useless that can make your video card get very high temperatures.

wait what O.o it destroys cards? how?

My GPU topped out at 90C the other day in XIV, I turned town some settings but it's still hovering at 75-80C which I don't really like.

Been looking at getting one of the GPU after market coolers but I dunno how to put those in or anything so I dunno if I wanna go that route.

but people should stay way from these useless settings
1 higher than 8xMSAA (anti alias)
3 shadow detail (highest)
4 ambient occlusion

If you play on small window to avoid lag you should turn ambien oc off, it will greatly increase performance. AO is hardly noticeable on the game

1280x960 Windowed (I like to be able to look up stuff on a browser if need be, I have a second monitor for it)
2x MSAA
3 (standard) Background Drawing Quality
Shadow Detail: Low
AO: Off
DoF: Off
Texture Quality is Standard
Texture filtering is Standard

Strange.. I play with the same settings but with x4 msaa and get 64c,
but maybe because my video card have double fans.

Could be that probably, I have a Nvidia GTX 560 Ti

Going to ask the PC guys at the mall if they know how to install an aftermarket GPU cooler or if they have any other suggestions that's cheapish.

Who would have thought that using your video card makes it heat up. The more you know, etc.

Well my GPU is the only new piece in my system, everything else is dated hardware so i'm probably bottlenecking it a bit.

RAM (8GB)

CPU

MOBO

lol, I just don't like it hitting temps of 90C, especially if it sits there for 5-8 hours.

Depends on what GPU you are using. You can usually google the maximum safe temps.

<.<; Just looked up my GTX 570, nvidia site shows max temp as 97C. A rule of thumb I learned was, try to aim for a max of 10C below the manufacturer's max. I idle at ~40C and under moderate load hover in the high 60's low 70's, so I'm good.

Also go get afterburner or something and manually set your fans (assuming your card allows it). Makes a world of difference if you're fan caps out at like 60% stock to just bump it to 75% or so.

yeah I got the evga precision tool, going to bump up my fan speed when I play xiv, I think it sits at like 55% under load so probably will bump up the speed to 60-65%

My profile runs fans at 65% until 55C then bumps it to 75% up until 80C then runs at 100%.

Think I should just bump up the fan speed to 100% when I run any game? (at least until I figure out about the cooler thing)

Changing your fans speeds makes a bigger difference then you might think. I would suggest playing with that before you invest in an aftermarket heatsink/fan for a GPU.

Personally, I wouldn't even bother with that unless you're running a custom water loop or something.
