I bet they got the idea for the directional based magic from the old superstition that facing certain directions enhanced your accuracy for nukes/crafting.

There are 2 jobs whose names are in the JP PS2 dictionary files (basically, dictionaries allow you to convert what you type into all the crazy characters you see as Japanese) and not yet in the game. One was Geomancer (風水士) and the other is Mime (ものまね士). I've always had a great deal of speculation about mime, but I think it's definitely in there, and has been for 10 years, for a reason.

The reward for training a unit in most Job classes, the Mime is unique in that it learns no abilities; instead, it mimics any action any of the player units do.
