Adaptability has a soft cap of 39. And it does increase invincibility frames during your roll, but the animation does not change.
In Majula, talk to the priestess with the red cross on the front of her dress. (The one you got your Estus Flask from) Also does.... Slightly increases HP for each point: +2 HP (0-20), +1 HP (21-50), +0 HP (51-99) Using healing items becomes faster Shield raising speed increases slightly Adaptability gives points in Agility depending on the level range as to the increase. (Agility reaches its softcap at 110, regardless of how much is gained from attunement or adaptability.) Just read Josi... :P http://darksouls2.wiki.fextralife.com/Stats You can get pretty far since sorcery is still OP even after the nerfs. (just some spells aren't as op as before(not sure if the nerfs are on PC or not))
Dunno about no shield though. I will say this, your first 100% physical shield is found in the forest of the giants, at the very end. Where it is though, is for you to find out! :3 Closest thing to the black knights early is the heide knights... The guys in all white sitting on the ground.
The next you find will be slightly stronger than the first one and using a different weapon. The 100% one only requires 16 strength. You might can, I forget sorcerer's starting stats and don't know yours, but it requires 11 strength and 10 dexterity. It's a fairly unique long sword in it's moveset. Actually one of the better melee weapons you will find early on.
Does physical and lightning damage as a base. Didn't want to say too much but there are stronger/similar enemies in the game, just not in the very beginning. The closest "single strong guy just placed here" will be either your Heide Knights (which do get a little tougher than the first one) or your random Pursuer encounters (which are scarce).
DSII takes a different approach to enemy placing, etc. If you want to know how many times you've died; Just go in offline mode and check the obelisk by the ocean in Majula. Next to where the crestfallen guy is.
Also, be sure you exhaust everyone's dialog fully. Some NPCs give you gear/gearsets after you buy so much from them, or exhaust all their dialog, or hit other flags. Noobie tip: Don't buy much if anything from the the first merchant you find in the forest. She moves to Majula after you kill the first boss and exhaust all of her dialog. At which point she has infinite soul gems and a few other options pop up as you progress through the game. I've killed a few npcs cuz they were ***.
:| You'll probably find them on your own, but in Majula, right after coming out of Things Betwixt, there's a secret(ish) Drop down where you can grab a Morningstar, and more importantly, Binoculars. You can binocular snipe with Sorcery to great effect in Dark Souls 2. Much better than DS1.

All the more reason why I'm Mturking like a *** to get a PS4 by autumn.

That back step shotgun combo was amazing, E3 is going to be great if Sony has more to show. From my understanding this was about half the clip of what they were going to show of this.
Does anyone actively PvP in DkS2?
Lately I have been working on Melee/Pyro build, it's quite enjoyable both in PvE and PvP. Incase anyone is interested here's some showcasing: YouTube Video Placeholder The goal : *extreme* single hit damage. I am talking about 1000+ a hit with R2, with instant kill backstabs/frontstabs. I aimed for 50% equipment load for fast stamina regen while still being able to move swiftly. Calibration 2 days ago nerfed GRS and Resonant weapon and... also broke another Hex spell.

Hmmmm :c *thinks* I am behind the times, but I made it through the catacombs... kinda
Beat Pinwheel at least, then proceeded to get gangbanged by giant skeles and fell off some cliffs. |
