Any good RPG suggestions for current gen?

JRPGs betray everything roleplaying is, and end up cliche anime action adventures full of niche tropes found almost in every JRPG known to man. fall for the obvious trap, trust the obvious villian, you move cliche teens through a scifi setting, and that isnt role playing at all. Ya gotta forgive my ignorance but what the heck does "JRPG" stand for, and why has this term suddenly come to the forefront of games? Is it simply a Japanese RPG? Or is there something else about a particular game, that gives it this branding?

It's basically an open ended shooter, the controls, the combat, the gameplay is all designed like a fps. What about it makes it an rpg and not a story driven shooter? On the flip side though, it's basically a replica of Skyrim w/o the guns and a different skin. I consider Skyrim more of an action/adventure than a rpg though. Maybe my opinion of a rpg is too old fashioned, but I honestly think that calling Fallout an rpg is really stretching the term. Shiva.Garlend said: » Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. It's really awesome. The demo felt solid, looks to be a wonderful game (that just came out yesterday) IGN.

Well, it kind of is isn't it? Role playing - playing the role of a character throughout a story. You don't have to have character creation and the ability to make decisions to be role playing. You are given a role, it's in the name! The introduction of decision making into RPGs is to make the game more open ended and get players to feel more involved. Asura.Kaitaru said: » PSP: Lunar Holy ***they actually released this? Time to get a psp. I see it's localized by a diff company. Working Designs did great, how do these guys do in comparison? I remember silver star story complete had *** hilarious dialog I grew up playing Fallout 1/2/tactics,so using VATS to me is 2nd nature. The idea of playing fallout 3 without it never even crossed my mind lol. I saw a friend play it normally though, without VATS and it looks *** impossible.

MMOs, and WRPGs feel more true to the original roleplaying experience. I want the PSP game, but I'm not holding my breath. I was disappointed in the changes when they released silver star story complete. Mobs on the map... combat changes... spells missing... etc. I played through both SSSC and EBC on PS, but only because of how much I loved the original. I won't play through it again. I'd rather put my Sega CD games in, and play through them.

Lunar: Silver Star Harmony (I want the Limited Edition) Quote: The Arts Gauge battle system allows players to unleash devastating attacks or heal party members has been implemented to add another dimension to the battle system. Leave the damn game alone if you're going to port it. Sure, redo graphics. I don't really care. Just leave the core of the game alone. I guess I'm a bit of a masochist for doing it, but I just ordered it.
Anyway, I've been debating since yesterday about getting Kingdoms of Amular. I'm already getting burned out on Skyrim. But in New Vegas I almost never use it, playing the same type of character. Just something about NV seems to lend itself to real-time FPS'ing more than Fallout 3 does. Not to hijack the thread, but if anyone can find a working download for harmony of silver star soundtrack, please PM me
Bastion is a great game if you haven't played it. It's more of a dungeon crawler than a true "RPG," but it's beautiful -- both visually and soundtrack -- and it's just a fun game. Quick play, sadly, but many replay option.
Very worth it. Sylph.Tigerwoods said: » Asura.Kaitaru said: » PSP: Lunar Working Designs is, to me, the epitome of what an RPG company should be (even moreso than Squaresoft even was). I was one of the like.... 3 people who owned a SegaCD back in the genesis days. EVERYTHING they made had a HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE attention to detail. When I saw OP had lunar in it, I was going to suggest finding an emulator and playing Vay, Lunar: Eternal Blue, Popful Mail, Growlanser...... (drones on)...... I was also going to suggest Xenogears, and the shining force collection... that is until I re-read the title and saw "current gen". I think you should still do yourself a favor and play these, or if you have, re dust them off. FOR THE RECORD: I'm not a ffxi-bandwagoner. I've played xenogears every 6 months for the last like.... EVER. You guys are jockin me, not vice versa D: I just got to the thames and I've had "MEN... OF.... THE SEA" in my head all day :/ Quiznor said: » Lets not start a retro games thread,or we'll be here all day xD Shiva.Schatzie said: » persona 2 eternal punishment :v. I bought the personas (again) on ebay about a year ago. This retro ***is PRICEY. What about the parasite eve that everyone was talking about recently? I remember a thread blowing up in anticipation of it coming out and then silence..... Was it that bad? Assuming you mean "The 3rd Birthday" which was parasite eve 3,it was absolute shite.I played the first one back in the day on a shitty psx emu because 1 wasnt released in europe.I played 2 on the ps1 back in the day,and this new one on the psp is pure shite. Its an all out action game.Nothing RPG about it Quiznor said: » Ragnarok.Ashman said: » Shiva.Schatzie said: » persona 2 eternal punishment :v.
