I sometimes wonder if quite a few of you think that people just snap their fingers or switch this with that and things just change over night easily. All of these things take time, resources and money to accomplish. The easy button does not exist lol.

I highly doubt that the MAJORITY of PS2 players do not own either an Xbox, PC (that can handle FFXI... lol), or possibly an older PS3. 90% if not more of current PS2 players would not be "lost" due to dropped PS2 support; SE could give current PS2 players a free key to install on PC/Xbox and voila, done. It's not like the initial price of the game is a big deal, since they make their money via monthly subscriptions.

2¢.

I personally own 2 360's, 3 computers, and a ps3 that are capable of playing FFXI, however both the 2 360's and the ps3 suffer from the same issue, not a bad idea for PC though, however what exactly would be the point?

even if they did drop console support it would only enable so much, an engine remake similar to the op suggested would be the only way. Indeed it is what XIV should have been and SE could actually be charging for it instead of having a free game... TBH I wish they'd just make the games free already and have additional content paid for, it's a system that works for numerous other games, why SE insists on clinging to an old style of mmo we won't know. edit: that being said: console support and being a cross-platform game was XI's selling point really... so take that with what you will.

Its a consistent revenue stream. Also, they don't have to spend any time first working out the new system they would put into place, deciding if it would be financially worth it, and then removing the old system and implementing the new one.

indeed, however: currently they aren't even charging for XIV and the payment options for XI are currently a joke (paypal isn't bad but not to enable recurring automatic payments are annoying)

not paying more for the same service without a reason, and them picking a system that charges for service is ridiculous and a slap in the face.

So paypal for now...gah...
