Frankly I don't know if they'll ever really be able to tell us what this thing is given the fact there seems to be no functioning medical research facilities in their general area.

Well, the new guy did say he was a combat medic. Maybe he'll have some insight.

My money's still on plague though.

Possibly. In the grand scheme of things the notion of what it actually is may end up being irrelevant. I think the "plague" will just be one of those things that they're going to have to live with throughout whatever drama unfolds this season.

Enu I agree with you I was responding to the one who said he died of natural causes lol. I definately agree with the new trigger and hope it results in a new zombie

No one said he died of natural causes.

People randomly turning into walkers without having any contact with them would be the closest this show could probably come to jumping the shark. An 'airborne' version of the virus is basically this.

My guess is still that he had a disease that kills both people and animals. The zombie virus may not turn animals (like the pig and the boar) but it will turn people. Maybe the prison becomes a place that's unlivable due to everything needing to be incinerated to clean it and so they group is forced out.
The virus is already inside all "survivors" from some unknown form of infection. So the virus being "Airborne" is already null, because they are infected with the virus already. Infected food sources could also be some new "Trigger" since the bacteria of turned zombies already instantly triggers the hemorrhagic fever and sudden death. IF it was a pre-existing condition maybe, but since he really showed no signs of any real medical disorder that we know of that causes hemorrhagic fever that intense and immediate we really have to assume based on whats given to us, its a new thing with the initial virus either due to a new "trigger" mechanism or from the virus in animals (which is also still a "trigger").

I noticed that too! It was like an akward moment. But that could also mean that maybe darryl has the infection too which I hope he doesnt! But the walking dead doesnt really show flashbacks so if they do reveal why something happened they may not show or reveal the cause but I hope they do. We will definately see though in 3 more days!

The ONE thing i hope they do, is do a "Day Zero" at the end and tell us how this stuff started. I'd enjoy it :<

Don't forget about the upcoming spinoff. It takes place in the same WD universe, so I am sure many questions/answers will inherently overlap.

I am very curious about what the premise would be. We already have one show dedicated to the problems facing survivors, it would be kind of neat to see things from the perspective of those who may still currently be tasked with researching/fighting the outbreak(s). I will still watch the spinoff even if it just follows an alternate group of survivors, but the other arc is a more intriguing option to me.

Why do I get the feeling that everyone on the main show is going to bite it this season, and that the spinoff will take over center stage?

Rewatched the episode.

Some things to note about Phineas aka Patrick (he is the voice of Phineas in Phineas and Herb).

When he walks to the showers his footprints are bloody indicating some sort of infection or attack.

He does cough into the water supply of the shower pumps so there is something happening with that in the future.

Bloody eyed Zombies do appear to be a new thing. There was the one that stood out at the fence when Rick was returning.

There was Patrick at the end of the episode. Then in the next episode/new seaons previews there were 5 individual instances of relatively fresh looking Zombies with blood coming out of their eyes.

The infection could be from food supply, or something like stabbing one in the face having blood splater on your face, rubbing it off but in effect rubbing it in and getting infected.

Yes it does feel like this season is jumping the shark like Sons of Anarchy seems to have.

Seems to me like it's a mutation, I'm not sure how he contracted it, but what I can say to substantiate my claim would be;

Typically the virus we're familiar with didn't cause damage to the body unless it was prior torn to pieces by the infected.

As we can see from the kid who dies at the end, he's bleeding as he gets to the shower. Once he falls down, his face appears to have been ravaged as if potent acid was thrown in his face. The thing to note here is he did not fall on his face, and I'm not familiar with any existing virus that could do that, and to do so so rapidly might I add.

This mutation appears to ravage the body from the inside, which ultimately leads to death then resurrection.

I don't think this virus have anything to do with the zombie one. It could be Ebola which make you have internal bleeding. The only issue is the speed the person dies at this could be explain in many ways. Everyone already have a sleeping version of the zombie virus which could mean there immune system is weak from fighting it off. Some people just have better immune system then others when they get sick from a deadly version like Ebola they just die very quick. That or the zombie virus that already inside the person aids the virus to kill off the host so he can take over.

Reason i say this is because if it's indeed a new mutation then they wont be much of a walking dead show if everyone dies within 24hours. Unless it's a new mutation of the virus like you said and it just dies not affect everyone. But really guessing what this virus could be on a zombie show is really just grasping at straws.

Well as far as medical thoughts go into it there are tons of conditions and viruses that have the same symptoms and are really hard to differentiate from. So it COULD be some separate disease or it COULD be a mutation, or it COULD be the same virus, just a feature we didnt know about. I wouldnt put too much into the characters saying "Oh, its super flu" either.

I agree could be anything but i would not rule out just being a normal virus and that guy just die. But who knows this is something new just for the show never seen this in the comic so i wonder if we every find out.

Executive Producer said it was based on the Flu pandemic of 1918, he doesn't name it but people familiar with history will know thats the Spanish Flu (H1N1) and it was a fast killer.

Yea, which is also spread by swine :<

But a producer dropping that knowledge only leads me to believe its a partial truth, they wouldnt hand you everything on the second episode of the show :<<<

Why not?

In the past, they've shown that they either tell you what's going on in an open and honest way on Talking Dead, or else they act coy and refuse to answer the question if it means exposing secrets for later.

Well...
You have the people who were stabbing walkers point blank in the face getting splattered with blood then becoming sick. The two burnt bodies at the end. You have a saturated area of zombie blood in the soil not more than 50-100 feet from Ricks garden and pig pen. You got somebody feeding rats to zombies and fleas on rats carry plague.

There are lots of sources for all types of infections.

Yuuup. Multiple ways of infection, but we still dont know exactly what it is. The interview today was literally just a piece for people to understand where theyre going with it. Partial truths and contradictions errywher to keep us watching :<

Wouldnt be surprised if it was a sudden realization that the virus HAD mutated and created some super predator walkers (I noticed patrick went for the throat immediately whereas the walkers we've seen so far go for the jugular/abdomen/other places). /overobservingtinfoilhat :<

Jugular is the throat. Patrick was grubbing on the intestines of that one guy.

But within the show: members of the group figure its an aggressive version of swine or avian flu. Thats the scene where Rick, Herschel, Daryl, Combat Medic guy, and Hindi Medical expert guy were looking at Patricks body in the cell.

Herschel says you gotta do something about those pigs and well Rick did. ;)

Questions now are who is feeding rats to zombies and who burnt the two bodies.

Huge issue in tonight's episodes. The pigs might be the ones spreading the flu. Rick got sprayed in the face and eyes with pig blood. A virus or bacteria can be transmitted through the mucus membranes including the eyes.

I think Rick realized this on the way back and when he was burning the pig pen and even seemed bothered about the possibility.

I'm thinking Rick may get the flu. I remember him being sick in the comic sometime after the prison was attacked. Will they do it with the show? If so Hopefully he lives.

the older little girl was probably feeding the rats to her zombie friend, and the 2 dead bodies are the woman (whos in the relationship with the black dude), and the other guy who was coughing. would be my guess.

@Reddwarf I think that Lizzy and Mika are the TV series response for Ben and Billy from the comics Which anyone who read the comic knows what going to happen next if they end up doing it that way.

@skarwind Ya the time in the TV is around the same time he get sick so let's say if that happens :) they already added new people that are from the same time line as the comic which we would see later on in this season.

Yes, he says that after Hardwick starts to ask if we're dealing with the exact same flu as that one. Nicotero said before that they used that flu as a sort of reference for one that can kill healthy people in a day.

I mean, im just sayin' they cant be absolutely sure just looking at blood streams on the face :< To be extremely precise about it they'd really hve to do an autopsy.

But i mean yea, its not totally irrelevant to think the director and characters could be throwing us for a loop >_>'

The jugular is on either side of the throat (well, the major veins) :<

Patrick bit dead center. Usually what predators do to suffocate the prey and rip the vocal chords :< Iunno...might be an overlook at details and whatnot. Also, he ignored maybe two cell groups before he attacked that one dude (seeing as how walkers can "smell" the living i dont see why a walker would ignore an overpowering nearby scent of food):< /tinfoilhat
