anyone know a good way to up the rate i catch bugbear/moblin masks people using a lot of dirty tricks to get minnows/glass fiber

I've tried it before and it just didn't seem worth the time, especially with how often a desynth breaks. Sardine Paste is definitely the way to go if you can't find minnows or cheap glass fiber.

Two Ebisu related questions:

1] How often will my Lu Shangs break fishing up Liks or Gugruthingys? And I can repair a Lu Shangs as 70 Woodworking with a very low rate of success, correct?

2] I am currently 99 Smithing and I am an expert and have uncapped it from 100. If I level Woodworking to, say, 80 to be able to repair Lu Shangs, will this impact my Smithing in anyway? As far as I understand it will not.

1. depends on fishing skill, liks are easier to catch and you can fix your rod without being afraid of losing your it. gugs on the other hand...unless you are botting you will need that stamina + ring, and will have to pay attention to when the boat docks cause you'll lose your rod and then you'll be like this
2. should be fine

Matsya: What's the approximate rate at which one will obtain a Shaper's Shawl? I am seriously considering spamming them to save money in the long run depending on the rough rate.

Same, no problems for me so far. Noticing very strange results in Oldtown (in my experience). Just gone 15 casts with 'You didn't catch anything', then I hook and catch a Pisces, then gone 7 without a bite.

(Putting it down to bad luck, as guy nearby seems to be catching ok).

Right after an update it takes a while for fishing bites to pick up, at least in some areas. Been that way as long as I remember. In a couple hours everything will be normal.

O.o would be very strange for the server to be programmed like that.

people tend to act like the game is a real world... its not its all math and bit's.

i bet you the fishing catch algorithm is no more more complicated that each fish according to bait has a certain percentage to get caught and then random roll.
why would they use more cpu usage for a more complicated algo and then try to save cpu resources on haste calculations.

It's in the 1~2% range. Depending on the cost of your synths and which craft you have, it's possible for it to be a gil loss, especially if you go 1/400 like Keseasura. I'm still going to try to get it for the hell of it though.

The stats/compilations for the Shawl rate are buried in the bg fishing thread.

The dialogue with the NPC is the dialogue you get if you haven't gutted a fish before; so this is at least his first trade in. Makes him 1/2 at the most, for which I still hate him!

Smithing... My goal is 104 until they make it a little more feasible to go higher. I guess I'll leave it, unless I get a lucky rate it won't save me much gil.

So I was fishing Giant Chirai about a month ago for the fishing contest (smallest fish, trying to get a friend Pelican Ring), using Noddy/Puffin and was chatting with another friend that was fishing next to me and he told me that I wasn't catching small size/weight fish was because of the Puffin Ring. Now I've always thought that Puffin just increases the bite rate of !!! as opposed to ! fish but he was saying that it has an effect of the size of the fish that you actually reel in.

I've never thought about it that way before, but the wording makes me think that the ring works in the way that I thought it did, but I could always be wrong. Can anyone confirm/deny this?

It's true. Take your puffin ring off and you'll instantly notice you are catching lighter fish.

Some eyeball data from my time skilling in Nash says it doesn't help you catch the unstacking fish. I wear one anyway, since it wasn't nearly enough or accurately enough tracked to give a significant conclusion, but I'm inclined to believe it doesn't do what people wear it for.

I wouldn't doubt it.

Noddy ring doesn't seem to do anything besides turn monster bites into no bites, which doesn't really do anything if you're using a lure. I assume apron/smock works the same way.

I've always felt like this might have been the case but never bothered to test it out. Who knows, this might even cause more line snapping on Haks because it's targeting much bigger fish?

My Black Sole bite rate seems poor (1/20) when I think they're the Western versions of Dil. What is the best part of Qufim (or another zone, perhaps?) to bite them? I'm using a Lu Shang's and Sinking Minnow.

6am
can't sleep

why is it harder to catch Bastore sweepers than Cone Calamary/Silver sharks with 22 fishing?
Halycon+Sliced Bluetail at Battalia[S]

The rod stays straight up like 90% of the time with sweepers so you run out of time to reel it in. But stuff way over my skill level throws the rod far to the left/right so i can deplete the stamina and catch them...

Totally wtf'ing at this, well i caught 1 sweeper finally for the cooking knife quest at least...

I got 88 last night and decided to wait until guild points reset to see what to hand in. Boy am I glad I did that. Off to catch a few Eels before handing a Squid in!
