So, okay forgive me if this is a dumb question, but if you can just buy the fish needed for ebisu quest should i just skip lu shang? is fishing without it really bad?

You could but you would 1) have to buy all the Guild point fish to get the 95,000 points needed to start the Ebisu rod quest (unless you want to catch all those fish without a Lu Shang/Ebisu which would be time consuming and annoying). 2) You'd have to buy all the Liks and Gugrus which, in my experience, are sometimes limited in supply. A lot of people do this step anyway (even when they do have Lu Shang) but just pointing this out because, depending on your luck, it could end up costing more, and will definitely take longer, to get the Ebisu than the to buy the LS rod outright. You can decide whether you think it's worth it or not to skip LS.

TL:DR = It's definitely possible depending on your funds and patience. But if you want to start fishing right away, buy the LS.

Also I've noticed a HUGE difference in difficulty between stackable fish and the larger unstackable ones. Is this because I am so low or does it stay this way for the rest of fishing? (Read: Is Matsya going to be this impossible to reel in?) ;_;

Fishing takes a very long time to level, took me 3 + months to go from 0-110, most of your questions have already been answered in here if you look around a bit more.

Also my question about the difficulty of Matsya still stands, I didn't think it would be an issue til I went to get my alt an Ebisu and I found that I can't manage to reel in Gugs without the Albatross Ring, am I going to be have to use it for Matsya also?
I cant answer your question because Ive never tried.... the way you are trying. I can tell you, however, that I get 9 seconds to reel in a matsya at 106 with ebisu and w/o ring enchantments. EXACTLY 9 seconds..... and 50% of the time it breaks my line.

You cant "prepare" for Matsya except get a lot of bait and be ready to be disapointed. There are no magic tricks.

when they say dealing with mobs they mean the monsters you can fish up, if you can catch and hold all 5 mobs then you are not going to waste bait on monsters. Items dont take bait if they are caught.
Only thing that will consume bait are jellyfish and matsya.
Think i catch about 10matsya about every 30-40bait, was some time agot i last did, got a bit frustrated of it.

So catch and hold all monsters, catch all items and cancel out Jelly fish since they'll eat up bait either way...right?

Ideally yes, I stopped catching/holding monsters though as I only go out there with 30-40 bait and holding the monsters can be a pain.

I don't know if this thread is meant for this type of questions, but I dont like starting my own topics a lot. I decided to start fishing and go for lu shang's. i found a guide on the wiki for targeting skill up fishes along with carps. would it be best to follow that or target fish that skill well and i can sell then buy all my moat carps?

Most of those guides are severely outdated. In today's game, it's actually much faster to do other stuff to raise gil and actually buy the rod now. Fishing the moat carp yourself would take you at least 2 months with 1 account, while burning cru/dynamis/VW drops could get you the money for a Lu Shang's in a week.

In short, buy the rod, target the fastest skill up fish.

So, okay forgive me if this is a dumb question, but if you can just buy the fish needed for ebisu quest should i just skip lu shang? is fishing without it really bad?

It's possible to get to the skill level required to start the Ebisu quest without a Lu Shang's. Crayfish Balls in Talacca Cove catch Dil (96), Mercanbaligi (86) and Ahtapots (90). I believe a Halcyon Rod would break on Ahtapots, so I'd cancel any !!! bites you get. Leaving only the other 2 as options, you'll only get line breaks which still give you skill ups. This way you won't have to worry about constantly losing a Shrimp Lure cause Crayfish Balls are so cheap and easy to make (you can buy all 3 ingredients for it from NPC). I don't exactly remember how low you can start Talacca Cove at, it's been years since I've been there myself. I believe I started around 70 back in 2009, but nowadays I hear people go as low as maybe 30 or 40 (obviously you'll need a bot the lower you'd wanna start).

You can try going 0-27 on Nebimonites in SSG, 27-50ish on Shall Shell/Bluetail in Buburimu, and then the rest in Talacca. All 3 spots should be doable with a Halcyon with only Talacca giving you line breaks.

As someone else said earlier, the real problem lies in getting the GP fish for your Ebisu KI. You'd have to be lucky and buy them on AH or have a friend with a Lu/Ebisu help fish them up for you.

tl;dr Buy a Halcyon Rod with Crayfish Paste in Talacca Cove to get you to the level you need to start Ebisu quest. Buy Liks/Gugrus instead of fishing them.

You'll be lucky to get one cape. You're either lucky or you aren't. I used over a thousand pugils before I got my first cape.

At that point I don't even think it would be worth it. That's alot of time/potential gil.

So question, wiki lists Titanictus as being catchable with a rogue rig, figured i'd try it now that i ran out of meat balls, this time im certain im not on a pirate route but still getting no bites or anything really monster items or otherwise.

So what am i doing wrong?

Already mentioned twice but I wouldn't hold your breath lol. For a good chance at 1 cape you will probably want around 1,000 pugils and have someone hold the monsters.

But as also mentioned it's purely luck, in fact it's around the same level of luck as getting 1 ebisu item.

In either case optimism is good and good luck >_<!

my guess is that the bite rate is really low on Rogue Rig, i'd stick to Meatballs

This. All bite rates are extremely low on Rogue Rig, they just open up the chance to catch all types of fish. I would never use this on a fish that's rare to catch to begin with, save it for Shall Shells and Trumpet Shells only.

You can have as many stalls as you want but only 1 Mega KI at a time. So you will have to adjust your layout to change which KI you want.

Don't forget you'd have to switch on over to the fishing guild to get the guild points to get the materials needed to make the stall which goes into your mog house. I still got 192K guild points to get from Alchemy before I start working on all the fishing guild points.

Now.. which mega moglification do you want to keep? Fishing or your other craft?

Did anyone ever do the bite rate of haks using Sardine balls...is it slightly less than minnows/s.minnows? And is bluetail slices better than sardine balls?

From a bait standpoint, 1 bluetail gets you 4 bait, 1 sardine gets you 12 bait. I would be highly surprised if sliced bluetail was a 300% increase in bite rate over sardine balls.

Plus sardine balls stack to 99, sliced bluetail stacks to 12. If you go out fishing with 6 stacks of meatballs you would need 50 stacks of sliced bluetail, assuming the bite rate was the same. Do you have the ability to hold more fish with 6 or 50 inventory slots filled with bait. Even taking into account how quickly you will gain inventory slots back with sliced bluetail, there will be a point where you can hold more fish with sardine balls.

For me it is more of a matter of what bait will allow me to fish uninterrupted for the longest period of time while taking up the least amount of inventory space.

No kidding. I started GP as soon as possible and only skipped a few really lame days (*** you lungfish). I'm now 78 skill and ready for my Ebisu, but only have 65k GP saved. So now I'm stuck waiting on that. =/

My mistake, I thought it stacked to 12.

With that being said, I have never used bluetail to fish haks. I am now curious to hear the answer.
