So after burning all the way to level 70 I see myself unsure on how to handle Maat. My skills are under leveled and my gear is none existent. I'm trying to figure out where I can skill up basically everything, and best way to go about upgrading my gear and what I should focus on. Monk is my first actually melee job so I'm not entirely sure how to go about macros and gear switches. >< So any advice would be awesome.

posting skill lvls would be helpful in telling you where you can skill up. as far as gear goes HP/acc/eva is what i used. been so long i don't remember what my exact strategy was, but pretty sure it was sleep pot with opo necklace til 100tp, WS -> tp wing -> ws -> hundred fists until maat died

Almost all melee jobs are pretty much exactly what Blevien said.

Monk is pretty straight forward and one of the easier ones to do provided your combat skills up to level (namely H2H and Evasion). If they aren't, spend some time in Kuftal Tunnel on robber crabs until you get in the mid- 100's. Then you can go beat on Forts in (S) zones, or find harder mobs and skill further. I'd try to get as close to cap as possible.

Have a WHM or RDM friend Protect IV/V you before porting from Maat.

- Sleep to 100 TP.
- Use a Blink headband if you got the gil to spend on one. 3 shadows can mean the difference between win or lose at level 70.
- Boost to Max Attack (it wears off from 3 minutes after first usage, so go to next step around 2:45 at latest)
- Engage Maat but do not hit him yet.
- Chiblast (Maat will come after you here)
- Engage
- WS > TP Wing > WS
- Hundred Fists

It can't hurt to buy a Au-Laut or two (HP regen drink), Vile Elixir, and X-Potion. If you don't use them, sell them back.

kuftal can get you to 200 skill level its just a bit slow but with the combat rating skill up food shouldnt be as slow as back then

As much as people have strategies for beating maat, one of the best things you can do is focus on gear. make sure your acc is high enough to hit him and your attack is high enough to put out consistent dmg. doesn't matter how good your strategy is, if your ws and hundred fists can't land he's going to beat you.

skilling Kuftal Tunnel on crabs and then steel crabs (gonna need someone to tank them or make a group) for the tree.

pretty sure as above poster mentioned, its the Opo neck, tp wing and 2hr ftw. could take a few healing pots (the HQ X Potions o think) if you wanted but really not required as to what i've heard years ago. AF1 will work fine.

found a quick vid that shows mnk maat fight being done in what looks like ohat? SH? and not sure what the pants are but reasonable gear to get if you wanted to mimic the person in the vid. also saw a few with full MNK AF.
Be sure to check it out full screen to read the log.this eHow gives the jiffs on how to do it (more like a refreash crash course) or try this link here and it will pull upa google list of examples. Many different ways but all come to the same strat. Hope i've been helpful and gl!

should also check in skill up food to help cap those skills.
maybe travel to whitegate or the past, and get sigil/sanction and get the food duration bonus

If you're deadset on going to fight maat as MNK, than go MNK/DNC and skill up in tiers, of where people level at (this may be harder with monster revamps).

For instance: (I'd say skip to here) Garlaige and fight the mobs near entrance, at least the ones that were T~ at lvl 30s, and that is also assuming they're still there. From there go to CN, or find out where the old beetles are in GC. Either that or you may be able to go to kuftal, which you can do up until 70, and try looking around in the zone, a lot of people do Magian trials there during certain days/weather. Also check out Cape Terrigan, as a lot of people do FoV there (on my server).

Once skill is capped, you can do what everyone else says, their strategies are pretty straight forward and will be your best bets.

If you're open to doing Maat as another job, go abyssea burn WHM, and buy/borrow a noble's tunic, light/earth staves and have at it. Did this on a mule with 50 healing skill? It was insanely easy.

P.S. Believe Evasion- is also not a good idea, at least for maat, but I barely know how MNK works @_@.

I'd go for sh and ohat if you can afford them. the acc alone can make a huge difference.

Not really sure if it was the best idea, but after going 0/3 I ended up throwin on some counter gear (Think I had some of the Campaign gear from windy) rocked counterstance the entire fight, did the usual Opo Neck etc. As well as a boosted chi blast. Countered a good bit of his hundred fists and ended up winning.

If you can get someone to help you with doing Shiva Prime to get Shiva Claws, I would suggest that and doing it on Iceday. It sounds stupid, but the paralyze effect kicking in can make a huge difference in this fight.

Something else that will help if you absolutely have to is to de-level to 69.. go do an escort quest and pop the exp scroll you get from it mid-fight when you're hurting. Of course being 69 might put you out of some pieces of gear, but you'll get it all back once you use the scroll. Instant recovery :D

For skilling up what I've done recently is go to Kuftal til 190 ish. Then go to The Boyhada Tree, MNK/DNC and mix Robber Crabs with Mandies (mainly for speeding up Evasion skill) - Careful though, Mandies link like crazy. Also: Pay attention, Don't pull Aquarius like I've done on plenty of occasions:

Also, to everyone else.. Question of my own.. the skill up food, does it work for guard? I know it's last to proc but used a few of them and not seen any guard skills :(

Actually, using the skill up food on WAR the other day it seemed to adversly affect my skill-ups.. I seemed to get less skill-ups under the effect of food than when I wasn't..!?!

Any fancy trick i'm missing or am I just unlucky??

Definitely get some saltenas/elshenas while skilling up melee/defense skills (respectively). Having used these when skilling up dagger on THF in Abyssea, I can definitely vouch for their effectiveness...and being a cook, it certainly doesn't hurt my wallet either. ^^;

I did it as a Taru 66 and I used:
Wivre mask,
Spartan cesti,
Peacock Charm,
2 dodge earrings,
Scorpion Harness,
Horomusha Kote,
Raja's Ring,
Ecphoria Ring,
Amemet Mantel +1,
Life Belt,
Aikido Koshika,
Vampire Boots.

Obviously opo opo for sleeping to 100% too.
No blink band
Carbonara for food
H2H and evasion were capped.

Boost > RR > Boost > sleep > boost > sleep > boost > sleep > boost > sleep > boost > dodge > focus > engage (at a a distance) > boost > chi blast > WS (can't remember which I used, sorry) > Chakra > hundred fists > vile elixir macro was mis spelt so didn't go off > WS when 100% tp > tried to use wing, but he was dead.

I got lucky, and that's how MNK Maat's tend to go, but following this strategy without the mistakes that I made, should get you a win once you cap skill. If you have any bonus pieces like AF to use while you use focus/dodge then re-equip other gear, great. Blink band is also a viable option to evade an extra couple of hits, but I didn't bother.
Remember that haste gear is useless in this fight, since it's only WS and hundred fists. The gear I quoted gives +~35 to acc and eva, and +30 to Att. Also gives a good base def (don't use counterstance).

DON'T put a boost macro in front of your ws. you'll lose time and that's invaluable.

I used a blink band, stoneskin torque, and shiva's claws on iceday. The rest of my gear was just stuff that I had from leveling.

-edit- The shiva's claws are what won me the fight, it has a HUGE proc rate on ice day, saved me from taking SO many hits.

I slept to 100, focus, dodge, boost, hundred fists, chi blast, Howling fist, fought to 100 tp, 2nd ws when he hundred fisted, tp wing, 3rd ws.

Thats how I planned it, I also had a vile elixer, and a vile elixer +1, it didn't work out how I wanted, and it also took like 8 tries.

My maat fight.

If you can burn your whm to 70 (could prolly do it in under a day...) it can be done really easily ;3 did my mule's with all the skills at 0 lol. just kite it then cure yourself when you need to >_>... afflatus solace makes things insanely easy.
