Quote: Earlier today, it was discovered that Square Enix had filed for a trademark of the name "Square" which cites the many methods of video game publishing we see in the video game industry today. It seems Square Enix is pursuing a re-branding effort as "Square". Thanks to users on the web, including deanbmmv of Reddit, we've discovered that the Square trademark looks very similar in description to the trademarking of Square Enix.
"Square" Trademark: Computer game software; video game software; sound recordings in the form of optical discs, magnetic discs and semiconductor ROMs featuring music and fictional stories; audio visual recordings in the form of optical discs, magnetic discs and semiconductor ROMs featuring music and animated fictional stories; prerecorded compact discs featuring music; prerecorded video discs featuring music and animated fictional stories; mouse pads; straps for cellular phones; video game controllers; downloadable musical sound recordings; downloadable ring tones for mobile phones; downloadable wallpaper graphics for mobile phones; downloadable electronic publications in the nature of magazines, journals and newsletters in the field of computer games and video games. Providing on-line computer games; providing on-line video games; providing information on computer game strategies and video game strategies via computer networks and global communication networks; providing information on entertainment in the field of computer games, video games, card games, animated cartoons, comics, novels and magazines; providing on-line non-downloadable comics; providing on-line non-downloadable magazines, journals and newsletters in the field of computer games, video games, cartoons and general entertainment.
Square Enix spawned from a company merger between Square Soft, and Enix. Square Enix also owns Taito Corporation (Eidos), which has been compiled into Square Enix Europe.
Perhaps a future press release will clarify this recent trademark filing, until then keep calling them Sqeenix
Link.

Instead of dropping the Enix, they should just drop the nix, and call themselves Squee.
Maybe add a few more e's.
I'm aware that it's not grammatically correct to put the apostrophe in "e's", but I feel it's warranted to eliminate unnecessary confusion. tl;dr: "Go f&*k yourself grammar Nazis."

Squaresoft said: No that's it.... That's the last straw. We aren't making chibi cell-shaded FFVII vs FFVIII: Part 3 - return of the fanboy's crystal chronicles. You've tried to milk our franchise for 10 years now and this is ***!

Ever since Square and Enix combined the games have gone to ***. Should have left well enough alone. Square made good games Enix made good games. Its like when 2 hot ppl have an ugly baby. Just no!

FF7 is so overrated
they should remake FF1 with PS3/360 graphics and voices.

Voices ruins games. Lazy kids need to learn how to read. Meh some do it well but if the voices dont match the character it can really throw alot off

They always sound kinda bored or like they're just reading the script and trying to get it over with. Don't they realize it's the same thing as a normal acting job? Need to do well to get more parts >_>

There are certain character archetypes in japan that don't translate well in the west. As a result a lot of the english voice actors don't have experience with that type of character and it just sounds off. It's generally the overly cheerful and spastically energetic types.

Wouldn't they already have the trademark to the name Square? They were called Square, not Squaresoft, originally. Squaresoft was just a different brand name for localization.
Like seriously why would they need to acquire that trademark again?

Nope. They already listed several reasons why they aren't. There was an interview somewhere, but can't be arsed to find it.

Mainly cause so many groups own so many different assets it would be a nightmare/impossible to get all the rights to put the game together, long story short

Changing their name back won't stop them from making shitty games.

How could they put out any of the Compilation they did if they don't have IP rights?
All of the key people involved in the game are still with Square anyway.

Square was headed downhill before the merger.
Aside from their blunder with Sony Pictures, could you elaborate on what was degrading from their trend of games?
I suppose FFX would be a hint, but it was still decent.
