Internet providers to act against online pirates

Quote:

U.S. Internet service providers, including Verizon Communications Inc, Comcast Corp, Time Warner Cable Inc, Cablevision Systems Corp and AT&T Inc agreed to alert customers, up to six times, when it appears their account is used for illegal downloading. Warnings will come as e-mails or pop-up messages.

If suspected illegal activity persists, the provider might temporarily slow Internet speed or redirect the browser to a specific Web page until the customer contacts the company. The user can seek an independent review of whether they acted legally.

Up until now, it seems like the ISP's have more or less allowed this kind of stuff to go on. I've heard of a few people getting warnings, but nothing more than that. I think the act of slowing internet speeds or permanently redirecting users is new. Just thought it was interesting and applicable to recent conversations that have gone on here. I do have a couple of conversation starters:

1. I torrent a lot and am more or less pretty safe with it. It's been over six months since I had any problems whatsoever with malware. I don't use an IP scrambler or any of that extra stuff, is there any legal way my ISP can tell what I'm torrenting? As far as I'm concerned, the mass majority of people who have been busted were using limewire or other crap like that.

2. Any personal stories about being contacted by your ISP would be appreciated.

They've been doing this for a long time. Every now and then they'll have a news story like this to try and scare pirates into not downloading.

ISPs don't want to do it, they're strong-armed into it.

They key word is MIGHT slow internet speed.

If you don't mind me asking, what service did you use?

This was like 8-9 years ago in the days of Napster.

I think Cable One was our interwebs back then. Never got a C&D after that. Thanks, torrents.

These statistics are so stupid and exaggerated in my opinion. A LOT of people wouldn't pay for the things they download. This is akin to McDonald's offering free cheeseburgers for a day, and then claiming they could have made one trillion dollars in revenue if everyone paid.

Yes, but one trillion burgers wouldn't have been consumed if they weren't free.

Internet should stay anonymous imo. Yeah some people use it for "illegal" activities. But how about you go after the websites that are hosting it instead of trying to play big brother and policing the internet. I feel this is just a small step down a very bad road.
