When I was working at a (now defunct) computer retailer, I'll admit that NOTHING was more cathartic then taking a PC that was getting chucked out back and smashing it to bits. Ever see the inside of a smashed up PS3 up close? Or an LCD TV? I did ^^ I wouldn't pitch the computer, though. Save it and use it as a file server, or internet machine. Digital Jukebox, maybe, or a "classic gaming" machine. I've got an older PC (not that old, mind you) that I use as a Media Center, got like every NES, SNES, TG16, Genesis, GBA, and some N64 games and emulators on...it's a big hit at parties. ^^ Alyria you win 4 internets for Office Space refrence w/ pic.
:) <3 Can I have a cookie now?
You need to first aquire 10 internets to trade in for has cookie.
Correct!! You can come round mine and have some cookies Aly <3
Awww...poor kitty :(
Woot I'm almost there, back up woody! Those cookies will be MINE!!!! MUHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
;-; I was just getting excited ;-; </3

I'd like to see an actual 10 computer...it's gotta be like the HAL 9000 lol THAT thing scored 5.6 out of 10? gotta be something wrong with your harddrive or something =/ should score 9.9\10.. But yeah, nothing wrong with FFXI on Vista! I'm running it on Vista64 myself, and its running smooth. (just dont try to install vista on your 98machine>_>) Kvazz said: Xxnumbertwoxx said: To put it in perspective: I have a Quad-Core Q6600, 4 GBs of DDR2 800 memory, dual ATI HD 4870 512 MB DDR3 video cards in crossfire, and a Western Digital high speed hard drive...and I scored a 5.6 out of 10 on the Vista experience. Two words and she's all over me :) I'm levelling my mule at the moment, WHM1... How the heck do new players stomach this? Yeah, I have no idea...I was decidedly underwhelmed when I got that result back. It works great, though, so who knows? Frobeus said: This topic is no longer about old PC's and failed OS. What about cats INSIDE of old PCs? lol but I like woody plus he is british! lol
But ya I wanna punch alot of humans in the face! That is acceptable X!
Same old same old. Brits getting all the loving! (/sarcasm) Edit: omg that cat is cute <3 The British fail pretty badly @ teeth, so I'd be careful there. However they prob more than make up for it with crazy *** tv shows.
I have good teeth, very good teeth actually; but you are right, it's incredible how bad some of our citizen's teeth is. I know somebody who's never been to the dentist before and she complained about having toothache...

I'v tried and got FFXI to work on Win98se.
Suggestions for if you do not want to upgrade your OS is to run a program called msconfig. Just click start run type msconfig. There are tabs at top click startup & un-check everything. Most likely your running to many other programs in the backgroud and your NiC is a software based NiC and it uses the Processor to maintain the network connection. A new operating system will solve this issue but it's like if your car gets a flat tire you could buy a new car this will solve the problem but think getting a new tier is 500x cheaper. Win98 is not the best operating system to use but it does work. The computer I had sucked bc it's so old infact i had 500mb free drive space left after install. LOL and had to run 800x600 at 12fps max. Alyria said: I'm assuming there's a pic there but my job is blocking it, so gay. Two words. Wooooodum said: Fools for being correct... There's an interesting concept. Winter, the problem is Windows 98. It doesn't have networking support that higher operating systems do; operating systems that simply automatically detect the correct configurations needed to route Final Fantasy XI's servers to your computer. Windows 98 does not do this, nor will it ever no matter what tweaking you do. Unless you can find out the specific port information and the necessary configurations needed to configure your network connection in Windows 98, it just won't keep a stable connection. You can take Ziggz's advice if you like and keep trying, but you're just wasting you're time. I think you've called out a problem on these forums in specific relief, and that is someone asking for help simply just gets snarky answers from negative-minded trolls who really don't know what they're talking about. The pat answer of "Yeah, it's not supported" is just a cop out for not really understanding the problem. A couple of things however: -Strictly speaking, PCs don't route unless there's some kind of dedicating routing app running on it to service other PCs on a network, routers route. - The "networking code" that everyone seems to be talking about is really not the issue. TCP/IP is a standard that hasn't changed in any meaningful way since FFXI was published. Windows operating systems write to that specification. The shell code certainly has changed to make the whole experience friendlier is certainly in that code. In general Vista is far tighter on restricting port traffic than Windows 98 ever was. However the TCP protocol works the SAME way in Windows 98 as it does in Windows Vista. Same with the IPv4 specification. All the ports that FFXI needs is in the manual and that's the same across operating systems AND consoles. -Since you're so knowledgeable as to what "the specific port information and the necessary configurations needed to configure your network connection in Windows 98" are, maybe you'd like to share it with the rest of this world rather than the nebulous hand waving you're doing now. Anyway, I finally got this configuration to work and even windower (which claims not to support 98) is running great. If anyone is sincerely interested in the solution send me a PM, it's a little technical and took a while to do so be prepared. Most of this stuff is available on tech help forums outside of the FFXI community. Thanks to those who actually wanted to help. |
