I hope no one here has lost a loved one to multiple sclerosis or is suffering with it them self, but if there was anyone that has experience with this I was hoping to get some advice from them, I don't want to dredge up anything painful but if it can help someone to survive this then I will ask anyways... My grandmother died a slow and agonizing death from MS. The illness fundamentally changed my mother's life. I cannot be more aware of how devastating it and other slow and wasting diseases are, but fairy stories aren't good hope.

When counting calories, does using something like a Foreman grill make a huge difference? I made turkey burgers today with 90% lean ground Turkey, but idk how many of those fat calories dripped out of the pan.
I had 260 calories of it, so just to play nice/round to an even number, I dropped it to 250 lol

If you're really interested, you could measure the stuff. It will be mostly fat and calories per gram of fat is easy enough. Virtually every calorie count on raw foods is a rough estimate, anyhow.

Yea, that's why I only dropped 10, but at the end of the day ended up 10 calories under my count; so even if I didn't; I'd still be spot on.

Your hard core about counting. Even doing prep for a show I would give myself a 100 calorie window. Carbs though, always strict.

Hey guys, I got accepted in the State Police Academy and it starts in a few months. They told us to get fit and in a good physical condition. As a minimum requirement to enter, they told us we are required to do a PT consisting of 50 pus-ups in at least 2 minutes, at least 6 complete pull-ups in a set and a run if 1.5 miles in 12 minutes.
My goal is to make the 50 push-ups without resting, 10 pull-ups in a set and run 1.5 miles in 10 minutes. That at least will take the training officers off my face since is a para-militar enviroment.
At this moment i'm doing 35-40 push-ups without resting, 7 fast pull-ups in a set and running 1.5 miles in about 11.5 minutes.
I'm 5'6", 134 lbs and i go to the gym almost daily just to train for this.
I got a routine set, but i am not a profesional, just going with what feels right to me. If anyone got any suggestions that i can do to reach my goal and surpass it, I want to hear it.
Also diet. If i should avoid something or eat more of something. Thanks in advance.

hmm; well aside from the pushups, you already seem to be at your goal.
Just make sure you keep up with the running really and I don't see you having any issues there.
For pull ups, if you're doing them fast; try doing them slow. You won't be able to do as many, but you will build muscle; and assuming you need to go back to fast (if you can't do 6 slow ones) you'll be able to do a lot more than you're doing now. By slow pull up, it doesn't have to be slow motion. Just come up at a good pace... the negative is where you need to pay attention to. Don't just drop down. This is half of the exercise and where half of the gains come from. Control your body weight and let yourself down slowly. How slow? It doesn't have to be slow motion, again, but just make sure that you're doing work against gravity, rather than letting it do the work for you.
For push ups, try doing them in sets of 30 if 35-40 is your max. Also can consider putting on a backpack with some books and doing weighed push ups. You won't be able to do nearly as many, but your regular push ups will feel so light in comparison when you take the backpack off

Brutally slow negatives on anything are excellent for building strength. They are especially helpful for pullups after you hit your limit on reps; jump up and let yourself down really slow. Repeat.

So finally got some nutrition available for soylent. Honestly, not bad
If the price ever came down to about as much/less than what I'm paying for groceries now, I'd give it a shot (It's $65/week based on 2k cals a day as it is now.)
Though, my only issue is that I don't do quite 2,000 cals. I'd probably do one pack with the oil and 2 without for 1690; and my problem with that is that I wouldn't be getting enough fats. If they had a lower carb version so I could go twice a day with the oil packets, would be preferred.
114g protein day isn't bad for a meal substitute

Anyone have any calorie dense cutting foods? I can't afford to eat 3-4 lbs of chicken breasts a day.
I'm eating 1-1.5 lbs to stay within my budget, but that's 440-660 calories only. Add a can of green beans or spinach, and you're still only sitting at 760 tops at this point (looking at my green beans now; 20 cals/serving, 3.6 servings in the can so only 70 cals. :( That's a penny/calorie! )
Right now I'm just doing filler calories. Eating my chicken, and can of veggies to get what I need from them, then filling in the rest with [insert high calorie stuff here] whether it be pancakes, or a gang of eggs (but at 70-90 calories/egg that has me putting down most of a carton if not all in one sitting, but it's still cost effective at around $2/carton)

Try brown rice and other things similar to it. Lentils are a good source of vegetable protein and some calories, though I find it can be a bit of a pain in the *** to diminish their earthy tones (bacon or ham help, just have to add a little bit of the latter to flavor). I've not yet tried quinoa, but I hear good things about it.

I'm confused what you are looking for. You are cutting but you want calorie dense foods?
btw check out the freezer in your grocery store for bags of frozen vegetables instead of canned crap. You get a lot more, they are fresh, and a pound is a buck a bag every store I go to.
Lately I have been making a lot of ground turkey cooked up with a packet of taco seasoning. Use half pound of it each meal, mix it with a whole pound of frozen mixed vegetables, 1/4 cup of shredded taco cheese and a little salsa. Full for hours on extremely healthy delicious food. Stuffed. It's a huge meal.
300 calories from pound of mixed veggies
260 from half pound ground turkey
110 from the cheese
60 from the seasoning
If you are looking for cheap calories though, maybe peanut butter? Pretty satisfying and calorie dense.

He wants to cut but has to maintain a certain calorie intake to prevent starvation mode and metabolic slowdown.
I personally think people exaggerate the effects, but Vegetto monitors his intake and results rather obsessively, so I'll trust he has an idea of how his body acts.

I think coconuts have a lot of calories with not having to eat a whole box of them. According to google 397 grams of coconut is approximately 1405 calories.

Not sure if this will meet what you're looking for, Tiger, but check out Hummus with olive oil. I'm not sure how many ounces/grams are there in a typical serving, but you can even use hummus as condiment. I think 1 tbsp has over 20 calories.

Phoenix.Amandarius said: »I'm confused what you are looking for. You are cutting but you want calorie dense foods? I'm moving to a cut while simultaneously trying to make a move to "clean" foods.
For example, chicken breast is something I'd call clean. Let's say I ate 1.25 lbs of chicken breasts/day, that'd put me at 550 calories. At this point, I'll want something calorie dense (but that is still good for me. I could easily eat a bag of candy, but yea) to fill in the rest. This is because if I were just to eat a bunch of veggies or low cal foods, it'd get pretty damn expensive to hit my calories while also eating clean.
If I were eating the types of ***I were before that weren't necessarily clean, then I could easily fill in the gap for the rest of my calories; but yea looking for clean eating at the same time.

I'd be curious to know what your definition of "clean" is. It's fairly easy to demonize pure sugar with no other nutritional content, but pancakes are only a short step behind in my mind. Something like peanut butter gets a bit trickier (especially if it isn't real peanut butter). It is commonly used for feeding hungry kids in impoverished nations and for making survival rations for a reason, though.
Related note, I have heard people make a lot of noise about alternate nut butters, specifically almond. Glancing at the jars in the grocery store, I really cannot identify a meaningful difference between natural peanut butter and natural almond butter. Anyone know the logic here, or is it just that certain folks are trying to claim that Jif is actually peanut butter?

Oh, if the pancakes are fine, then I have no problem with that. Just didn't know if they were too considered simple carbs vs slow digesting ones.
I could tear the *** out of those pancakes every day if I'm not doing myself a disservice with it. Basically I've been doing scrambled pancakes. Enough mix to make 16 small pancakes (900 cals), 2 eggs (140 cals), 1/2 cup of oatmeal (150 cals). The thing is way too big to flip, so I just scramble them (This turns out pretty cool anyways because after you let the bottom get toasty, then start mixing, you'll get chunks of crunchy pancake smothered in hot dough/batter.

If you are cutting I don't think you want massive calorie spikes like that. Even if you just had 1200 calories a day, if you ate them all at once you will put on fat. With the huge volume of exercise that you do I bet you can cut and still eat 2500 calories a day if you spread it out and kept meals 500 calories and less at a time.
Same with your protein. It does you little good to exceed 30 or so grams at a time. Your body can't use that much rapidly and does not store protein for later; it just converts the excess to sugar.
I've played around with diet for a long time and just recently got into the high protein diet properly. In three weeks my muscles are ballooning and I am losing more fat. I've been doing gram of protein per pound of body weight. It's basically 1/3 of my calories from protein but I never take in more than 25-30 grams in a two hour window; goal about 200 grams a day. It is a little inconvenient having to constantly go have a little protein every couple hours but I cannot argue with the immediate results.

Try it for 3 weeks then provide your own citation. I can find citation for anything you want and then for the opposite of what you want. 'Tis the internet. Unless of course you have a go-to source for all nutrition advice, in which case why are you asking me for citation and not just referring to them yourself?

I've been doing intermittent fasting for a year and a half now. I only eat once a day.
Started intermittent fasting looking like the left; and got to my leanest with fasting on the right.
I can't really say I put on fat between those 2 pics

As Vegetto pointed out, intermittent fasting would like to have a word with you. I'll have to dig around to find some links to people who have studied the research a lot more heavily than I have.
Nonetheless, in spite of the fact that I tend to be an aggressive jerk, I was asking for a citation exactly so I could compare. I'm open to new data if you have it. I'd also like to see where you got the data about the body only being able to process X grams of protein "at a time," if only to figure out what the timeframe is.
This thread is basically for discussing workouts and dietary intake for people who are trying to or looking to getting into better shape or eating healthier in general.
Any and all questions regarding either of the two can be asked and hopefully answered here as well.
