Just too complicated gaiz :/
By Aixin 2011-03-23 05:47:58
Ok so I'm roaming around on the webz at 6:27am because I'm so tired I can't sleep, and I find this cute little chat thing that they made on the "Official Forums". Someone new came on and started telling everyone that they wanted to level Red Mage as their first job. Personally, I thought that was great. But everyone was telling them not to do it; that they probably won't be able to beat Maat with it and that they should just level White Mage instead because all they'd have to do is survive for 5 minutes.
If you leveled White Mage because you either wanted the cap or because you liked the job or maybe because you really did have difficulty beating Maat on any other job, that's all fine. But to tell everyone that's new that they should level WHM first because it's easy, you'll always get invited to Aby parties and can leech so easily... I think this is why I keep running into Paladins without Flash or Black Mages without Stun. Because those spells, and strategies dealing with those spells, are way too complicated?
I'm mean..
I don't even....

i leveled white mage because i was a terrible new player and was bad at Dd (lol monk/white mage did Tp move every 2-3 mandies in yhoator ); )
i also would spend weeks in valkurm raising and curing people before they added those nomad moogles, that was fun being the beach medic! i guess that is where i got most of my skill from is from that experience, nowadays you find white mages that can't heal if their parties' lives depended on it
my advice generally for new people is to choose a job you'd enjoy but that you are good at it, i think i'd enjoy bard but i am a terrible, terrible bard..

One time I had gotten really pissed off about not having nice things, and I stayed tele'ing til I could offered a Hagun and Kirins Osode at the same time... This is when those pieces were good of course. So that was a LOT of gil o.o I never even went to a party or solo'd cause I just had tunnel vision about those damn things.

Just saving them trouble..
I've known a lot of lvl 70 rdm's that quit the game because of the rdm maat fight..
Inb4 "Suck less"
The others that weren't able to beat it had to level up an entirely new second job to win....
Rdm maat really is unreasonable at 70.. it takes a huge investment of gil for a new person to get all the meds and everything..
and farming up a rdm testimony is gay without sky access.. i've helped quite a few farm them so i've seen first hand lol
yes its an achievement and all that stuff .....
but overall i've seen more people quit over it or just change to an easier job.. than struggle through it..
just my 2 cents

I leveled whm the week before servers went down for dual boxing and I am missing like half the tele's and misc spells unrelated to Proc'ing or keeping my alt MNK alive haha. Back in the day on my first character tele hoe'ing was my gil mainstay :P I have fond memories of it, the first good friend I ever had on FFXI was Jememy on Gilgamesh and he was a WHM so I wanted to be like him :P
If I were completely new to FFXI I dunno really what I would think about it at this point. Hard to look at something from a fresh perspective when you've known it for so long.

A friend of mine got so frustrated with RDM Maat and at the time the only job I leveled was PLD, so I said let me give it a try. So first time playing a mage job was trying to beat RDM Maat. It took me 3 tries, only because I didn't know to stack int gear to successfully sleep him.

friend of mine started with rdm.
he got up till the maat fight. after a lot of tries he lvld samurai and obliverated maat in seconds.
this one fight made him so furious about rdm that he doesnt even tell his linkshell he has lvld rdm to 70.
but if he quit because of that maybe he wasn't a real rdm after all.
when i remade my character i actually planned ahead and lvld mnk to 18 to get subjob quest done (pre-lvlsync and pre-fov-times) then lvld blm with mnk sub till lvl 12 was fast and really easy compared to blm/whm or even worse whm/blm with lvl 1 ....
never leveld whm over 30 though.

All I have to say is if someone is just starting STAY OUT of abyssea till your at the very least level 70. We don't need more lvl 90s with lvl20-30 and even lower skills. lol.. But yea always side with the job you like more if its RDM lvl it, if you cant beat maat on it. Lvl up another job like can abyssea WHM up just for beating maat np then continue on with your preference of RDM.

You can farm rdm tests at the entrance to temple of ughlypee. The spot where you clear tonberry hate. It's also a decent spot to lvl enfeebling macic if you're a 70 rdm. At least it was when I did it in 04'
Rdm maat was my limit break, and I did w/0 any meds, and on ps2. Took a few tries, but it is hardly the impossible task people make it sound. Shallops tropicale for food is a big help. Only thing stopping people would be if they lolabyssea burned their job to 70, and have ***for magic skill. In which case I have no sympathy for you.

To a point i like having the option of being able to get anywhere and everywhere within a second to even a minute... but it does kinda suck for those WHMs who lost such a strong portion of their money flow. Tele's are completely dead other than a random tele-yhoat, and maybe low level tele's. its nice to have that option, but it takes away from the games difficulty.

I thankfully leveled DRG as my first job, not even knowing about the Maat fight. So when I got around to leveling RDM, I didn't have to worry about it. I don't think being able to beat Maat on RDM or not makes you a bad player, just you didn't go through all the trouble to do something that really has no bearing on endgame. Most times RDM in endgame just sits there, cures/buffs/refresh and stand there unless they're low on MP, then just vert and continue on. The most fun I had on RDM was kiting and CS stunning, all of what, twice? Slightly disappointing, but new players can handle it just as well as WHM. Would help if I got around to building gear sets for Nuking, though. >.>;

IDK IMO RDM is one of the toughest end game jobs out there if its being done right. Refresh cycle/haste cycle/debuffing/nuking/curing/kiting(if need be). I always try to make life as easy as possible for the main whm in alliance.
Also I've seen a lot of RDM's get up to maat limit break go O-fer and quit. RDM maat fight is the single hardest maat fight in the game. So yea picking it first is taking the hardest road possible. Especially if you're on Elvaan or Galkan. Not to mention a lot of RDM's seem to only really have done the party aspect of RDM up until then(they haven't done much soloing)
Most of the people who talk trash about rdm maat being easy have either done maat on another job already(so they already know the tempo of the fight and what to expect/have the gil/did it at a level higher than 70, or are just plain full of ***tbh trying to epeen to make themselves feel better about their inadequacies.)
Any new RDM who needs advice on the fight feel free to drop a line. GL on it and if you don't have patience level another job to get through Maat!
