Since we're having lists, I should flesh mine out:

1 - Charizard
2 - Golem
3 -

Seriously. Tell me that last one doesn't look like it's on SOMETHING.

1.Blastoise (Squirtle being my favorite)
2.Pidgeot(sp?)
3.Pikachu (until 60 then Thunderstone for Raichu)
4.Arcanine (if accessable, if not then Magmar)
5.Alakazam (if not able to trade for one then Mr.Mime)
6.Dragonite (should be a given)

Never went wrong using this set up back in the day.

Squirtle is number 1 favorite, followed by Lucario both are badasses

you guys picking out teams eh?
i went through the game (red/blue) and found the best balanced pokemon team available based on stats and abilities they could learn (including the 1-time-use TMs.)
in no specific order:
1. Starmie for psychic/water, mainly for Recover
1. Articuno is better statwise if you prefer, but i love Recover too much.
2. Snorlax has enough HP and def to last through any fight on the game. teach him some good moves and gotta love Rest -> Poke'flute.
3. Zapdos lightning/flying. mostly due to the fact that he has no weaknesses and is strong to almost every type of attack. he is by far the most useful pokemon on the game. his only weakness is running out of PP.
4. Moltres for fire. there aren't really any good fire pokemon in the first series, but that's mostly due to there not being very good fire attacks. Fire Blast is too inaccurate and everything else sucked.
4. Dragonite has great stats and a versatile learnset. i much prefer to teach him a decent fire move than waste an entire slot on my team for an element/type i rarely use (Moltres).
5. Gengar due to the fact that you can completely avoid a shitload of attacks, rendering many enemies completely useless.
6. Venusaur in the rare case you need a plant pokemon. i usually load him up with enfeebles and send him out first to paralyze/sleep. but he's mostly situational and not as good as the others, but he's definitely the best plant pokemon in the first series.

Victini's a good pokemon, if slightly lacking in moves prior to 41.
Still wish I had a V-Create one D:

Took my Victini a while to really be useful. I went out and got myself Psychic and Flamethrower, only to have him learn Searing Shot later. Mine's currently 71 and he rocks, but, I may or may not keep him in my team. He takes care of Marshal for me, but all his damn Pokémon know Stone Edge and Earthquake. Someone trade me an Abra from their White. Q-Q

I like to use the Zen Headbutt > Psychic combo. I get really lucky and it makes them flinch almost all the time. V can take a Stone Edge to about 50% HP and then finish them off. When all else fails, use a different type, or exploit their secondary type if they have it. In the E4 re-matches, Marshal is by far the hardest.

That's the one thing I love and hate about the new AI as of like, Gen IV. All the Pokémon have a move that is super effective against what they're weak to, and then they spam the ***out of it. -.-;

They really do D: That Hydreigon at the end was so annoying, if it used anything other than Dragon Pulse twice in a row I could of got more than one Dragonbreath off per revive. Fast also, though my Scolipede was a bit underleveled at the time to compare (and my Zekrom has a -speed nature).

lvl49 haxorus was my answer to that *** hydra...since he started with that coffin I sent haxorus out, dragondancex2 and proceeded to OHKO his entire team, moveset on haxorus is Shadow claw, Dragon claw, Dragon pulse, Dragon dance. It has a +spd/-Sp.atk nature iirc, need to check

Edit: Zekrom is making me sadface, even with a beneficial nature its looking kinda bleh

They balanced this generation nicely, so you don't get any terribly over powered pokemon, just some are stronger than others.
