These people are honestly brain dead. I feel really sad for the people in Japan. No one deserves things like this.

One of those people claimed that Japan started WWII by bombing Pearl Harbor. If they had even half a brain they would realise that it started way before that.

Yeah. The war actually started in 1939, Pearl Harbor was 1941.

Such "patriotism" is beyond my understanding.
This is what happens when you make a movie out of something bad that happened a long time ago.

I don't care, after having been to Nagasaki and seen and read some of the horrific stories there, children dying of leukemia, entire cities obliterated.. starvation, cancer... no water.. I've concluded that no group of people, no amount of men, women, children deserve these kinds of horrific atrocities. People can claim to be blind and fight for an idea, but in the end the breakdown of ideas come when people are just trying to survive. Trying to keep their families that they love together.. and trying to suffer through the pain.

People who abscond those feelings make me sick.

I don't want history to repeat itself ever. I'd love to do anything I could to help, even if it's just donations. Every little bit helps in the end. Compared to the problems I think I have they all pale in comparison to the events that happened Saturday. One of the videos I was watching showed the waters going over roads.. I didn't notice it til I looked very close and those little dots running and getting swept into the black water we're people..

I can't imagine how many we're in those cars that got swept away. and that village that was swept out to see with no signs of people :S
They need our help whether the stupid hicks here like it or not. we need to take care of our fellow human beings, especially our allies. If something horrific happened on that scale I'm sure people would be willing.

900 people dead. 9500 reported missing.

I am just stunned at the surge of quakes and tsunami's the last few years in that area, I hope everyone stays safe

It's the ring of fire for a reason. But it is really unfortunate.

We have Tsunami warnings all the way on Vancouver Island, here in BC Canada, though I think the mainland isn't at risk. I know im late to the thread, but damn, 27 pages.

Also, there's some theory that natural disasters are related to when the moon comes closer to the Earth. In 6 days? I Think, Earth comes closer than it ever has before, and last time it happened, we got Hurricane Katrina. I'll try to find a link.

World War II and a naturally occuring disaster have nothing to do with each other; people on the internet are *** stupid, but this shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.

Also, I'm studying World War 2 at the moment.

Germany was violating the Treaty of Versailles by developing an army, and for six years the League of Nations (now United Nations) didn't do ***. It expanded it's territory, and took back some that it lost in the Treaty of Versailles. When it invaded Poland on September 1st, 1939, it had been warned that Britain would take military action.

Britain and France declared war on the 3rd of September. Canada was now autonomous from Britain, so they had to decide whether to go to war or not, for theirselves. Our Prime Minister signed a permanent joint security agreement with the US sometime before this, but we were still worried about being invaded in the event of a British defeat, so on September 8th 1939, Canada declared War.

Blah blah blah, the war was being fought, but the United States didn't join yet. When Japan bombed Pearl Harbour in 1941, the United States, who had no intention of joining the conflict, declared War on Japan within hours, and the Axis alliance (Germany and Italy) declared war on the United States.

I should really read earlier pages to figure out how World War 2 became a topic in the Japan Earthquake thread.

Well, the moon is proven to have an effect on Tides, so Tsunamis are not out of the question. I agree, it seems a bit of a stretch, but it's also incredibly coincidental. I wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibilty, after all, something has to cause natural disasters, and the moon actually does have an effect on Earth, it's not some crazy *** explanation.

Somewhat off topic but: I hate the people living above me. They're doing something upstairs and I jumped thinking it was an earthquake.

You know what though? ***'em.
U.S. Navy/Marines/Airforce/Army(?) Stationed or Close to Japan is helping out with relief efforts and the reactors. So screw the ignorant folks really. I'm glad we are doing something because if one of these plants go.. the effect can be worse then both of the bombs combined right? The japanese don't deserve that again. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy let alone an ally.

Yeah, someone in my Social Studies class was like "IF THEY DONT WANT THE PLANTS TO SPILL, SHUT THEM OFF, GOD PEOPLE ARE DUMB"

and I burst out laughing x.x I felt really bad about the subject, but what a *** idiot. And this is why Nuclear plants should only exist in North Dakota! (in the middle of a tectonic plate, never been a single earthquake there)

The problem wasn't the earthquake.

The problem was the tsunami. The now 41 year old BWR survived the largest japanese earthquake in recorded history with prestige.

Decay heat from the core, even when in emergency shutdown correlates still at about 7% Reactor Power and takes several days to cool down.

That's very smartical, but I agree, it's not simply solved by turning them down.

Let's not have a WW2 / nuclear bomb debate in this thread. I'm happy to have it elsewhere, but let's keep this one on-topic for now.

1555: Andrew Coad in Tokyo writes: "A strange hush still hangs over Tokyo with noticeably fewer cars on the roads. Taxis are operating and trains are getting back to normal schedules. Not such a good story in the stores - shopping today for bread, milk and water in several stores and there was none. The shelves are barren of all the key essentials as well as snack foods. Plenty of beer still, though

Hurray no shortage of beer

1705: A quick recap: There is continuing concern over the quake-hit Fukushima No. 1 reactor after a powerful explosion there early this morning. Japanese officials say the container housing the reactor was not damaged and that radiation levels have now fallen. But experts say it is not clear whether the situation is under control.
