He says there is lots of traffic coming in the other direction. Authorities in vehicles with sirens are making public announcements to the crowds.

Silly japanese people. So concerned with venting.

Radiation levels aren't really that much of a concern if you get even just a few miles away. Fallout of contiminents on the otherhand...

Most people don't actually know the difference between Radiation and Radioactive Fallout though.

The current Ratiaion levels at the plant amount to a Year's standard dosage within an hour.

That's actually not even that bad.

I'm in surreal zombie mode right now. I'll just keep posting these for a while.

Would love continued commentary by Dasva, Catastrophe, and others knowledgeable in all this stuff.

Also, in the video, it's almost surreal, the amount of energy it had to have taken to cause such a catastrophic and instantaneous failure.
This case probably but not always. Brittle fracture often occurs like that... things just reach there breaking point and then snap. Though our understanding of materials is alot better and being a nuclear plant take steps to prevent that

There's recently been an explosion at a building at one of the plants, which is called Fukushima-Daiichi, or Fukushima I. It's not clear what the building contained.

Radiation: Techically pretty much all energy besides potential and kinetic energy. Ie subtomic particles zooming around. Minimize exposure by time distance and shielding. Distance reduces exposure alot. Exposure rate is proportional to the inverse of the distance from source squared. So 10 miles away it's 1% of what it was 1mile away. Etc. Of course that's what the source is producing right then. And we will of course pour ***on it to shield it and reduce it to background.

Fallout: Peices of stuff like fuel or building material or poisons fission products etc that emit radiation. Carried on the wind it could litterally go hundreds of miles and can have rather long half lifes. This is worst not only in the distance but the fact these things keep emitting radation that isn't being contained and much closer to you. Like possibly from the inside. This is bad particular since your skin itself actually protects you from a decent amount of the more destructive types of radiation. Plus some of it stays in your body for awhile. Especially if ingested... especially Sr I believe as chemical it is similar enough to calcium for your body to actually use it for your bones.

This makes it sound like they are unconcerned with fallout which would imply that there isn't any and that explosion wasn't from the reactor.

Well if there was they should be checking the weather and evacuating anyone in the direction the wind is blowing for rather decent distances instead of worrying about local radiation lvls... now in Soviet Russia I would expect them to completely ignore that... but not in japan. Actually no cause even in chernobyl they threw concrete on that ***right away. At the cost of a few peoples lifes

CNN is reporting on the wind patterns. It looks like most fallout will go directly off-shore. Whew.

Buzzkill.

But, no, seriously, apparently it'll head into the pacific. Wonder if that could have any effects on marine life...

I just saw that. It's actually decently different since it links you to pressured water reactor system instead of the boiling water reactors used in this case.

Not that much. Little particles here and there will be diluted amongst trillions of gallons etc. It's part of the reason we used to test bombs in the middle of the ocean. Though never anywhere near that close to shore naval vessels do discharges when out to sea.

Would be pretty easy to tell really. So they should already know... how long before we do is another story
