I don't have any evidence to refute it or back it up, since the current episode out when I began watching the series was "A Dog and Pony Show". I've seen macros/posts on 4chan refer to her as Ditzy Doo on occasion (I think it's a cuter name anyway x3).

At the end of the episode, an impostor derpy (same color, same mark, only difference is purple hair) is shown briefly leading the birds back. Of course, it's possible (probable, even), that this isn't Ditzy, but I always took this as a joke from the animators.

I'm not sure when WWU was written, but the first instance of derp-eyes was near the end of the very first episode. I doubt that it took /b/ very long after it was released to notice the (supposed) error in animation, so it's entirely possible that they were referencing Derpy in WWU.
Or not, I'm just making speculation.

From Fyre-Flye (Lauren Faust) - Ha! I lurk around a bit and I noticed the Derpy phenomenon. As far as I know, her wall eyed moment was an accident -- or perhaps a layout artist entertaining him/herself. Who knows? Background ponies have no name, and their butt symbols are picked at random, so she can be Derpy if everyone likes. A later episode references a less-than-intelligent local pegasus named "Ditzy Doo" so maybe she can be her if we ever need to show her. But I would not want to step on everyone's Derpy love.
