numerators and denominators are treated like they're in parentheses. For it to be -7/3, it the formula would be:
(-5/8)u + 1/3 = (-1/8)u + 3/2
which it's not.

I'm going to assume that she meant 1/8 * u, as if she meant 1/(8u) I"m sure she would have typed it that way.

so, yeah: it is.

Denominators with terms are always under the summation they're in parentheses. They way she typed it is the way that works out to -3/7.

I think we can both get to 1/2u=-7/6. Which is viewed as 1/(2u)=-7/6.

You're making the assumption that she meant the "u" to be under the denominator.

My calculator even disagrees, and I can type it in exactly the same way. (it's a little more advanced). We'll leave it as she typed it 1 way, everyone but you managed to understand what she meant and solved it as such.

It has a term in the denominator. Viewed it would be 1/(2u) not (1/2)u, which is what you are getting. I'm sure she did mean it the way you think it is, but that's my reasoning for why I got a different answer, because I assumed correct use of invisible parentheses.

I got the correct answer for how it was written. I got the wrong answer for the way she should have written it because this site is a terrible way to format fractions.
