Zelda kinda did that in Link to the Past for SNES.

Go find 3 jewels. Now go beat these 8 dungeons. Now beat some more in the dark world.
3 vs 8, and on LttP, there was transition during it, not just navigating back and forth throughout the map like a gopher.

After.

Of all the games I played growing up this CS really stands out looking back. I didn't really get into gaming/rpgs untill the PS2 was out so earlier games were all seen while looking back, maybe thats why none of the FFs really stand out to me.

That was mine too... Zell was rediculous if you just spamed his 2 button attacks during his limit break and Quistis's white wind was similarly crazy if you kept her with high max HP.
