I'm not sure what the rules for fences are in the game you are playing right now, but in various Harvest Moon games you could use fences for many purposes.
In some having crops fenced in will prevent wild animals from eating your crops at night (or you can leave your Dog outside overnight once it is an adult), keeping animals fenced in while grazing outdoors and also protects them from wild animals. One of the games had some sort of luck thing/glitch that if you put a gold lumber fencepost in a certain plot of land that none of your buildings would be destroyed by weather.

Oh, by the way. I just saw this video on YouTube of a dude dancing mostly naked to the Pirates of the Caribbean theme while singing somehting in another language. I.....I don't know what to say to this...It's almost the oddest thing I have ever seen on YouTube. Although, that "Erection Japan" video still tops the spot in my opinion.
