From what I've seen on BBT (which isn't too much), yeah Sheldon's smart, but he also whines a lot and bickers about dumb things like eating food on the wrong day or someone sitting in his cherished spot. He'd be too busy complaining over the details to really be too useful. Again though, this is just my observation.
