Nah, My friends and I used to normally lend each other gil a lot. On Phoenix I made about 2mil~ a day while afking, and I let my friend have 500k for letting me use his character. Another friend lent me....8mil? to buy some stuff, too. So, yeah.
I guess I need rich friends.

As for buying stuff, I don't usually buy big stuff for people as a rule. Otherwise too many cats would try to use their tails to get stuff from me (since I've always been semi-wealthy) since it's fairly well known that I have a slight weakness for mithra!
That said, for those close to me I would often buy gifts for and such... but only a privileged few! If you're a friend I would often drop small costs like the odd 10-50k or so here and there.

Some of the midrange specialty gear is overpriced too, like MDT gear. That's when you can even find it, heavens forbid I ever find a Coral Scale Mail +1 again.

I was always helping people in game, but I never really gave out gil. I always crafted, PLed, teleported, etc. for my friends for free. Actually, the first couple years of FFXI was spent constantly helping others. Then I joined an HNM shell and I rarely heard from those people after that. :3 They got tired of me saying "Nope, event time!"
Oh god. HNM. I remember breaking my Death Blossom sword in the Tree with my friend. And we Aggro'd Aquarius. Some random dude asked if we needed help, then mentioned that he doubted we did because we do Ixion everyday. I felt so well, powerful? I guess? Popular? lol We dominated Ixion for a good 9months, but I don't think the guy realized I was always on tank or DD...And Aquarius =/= Ixion. <.<
