I just had a lightbulb moment regarding old school vanilla FFXI and the official game. Draylo, I think you'll like this.

What if SE made another server, that you had to start fresh on and couldn't server transfer to and from, that was vanilla FFXI? Just like blizzard did. You would still have to pay a sub fee, but the money from that would go toward supporting official/current retail so that a better flow of content can come out.

I know, I know. It won't freaking happen. But in my mind it's such a good idea that it's silly Square Enix doesn't jump at it.

It is a good idea. It would make money. It would be fun.

That's really the long and short of it. There are so many things that would make money, that aren't done because they don't make enough money. If a thing breaks even it is a success. But that's not how it works. No one will invest 5 minutes into anything if they aren't getting 7 figures.

I'd rather they redid the whole game to get away from the archaic systems, give it a huge UI and graphics lift and then a new expansion. If we had to start from scratch to get that, starting from rank missions to Zilart etc with all new graphics, I would so do that. I think I would die of happiness to see that.

You would think thats true from a business perspective, but why then would they remaster and remake some of the most obscure games like FF crystal chronicles or chocobo racing.. I can't imagine they thought they would break 7 figures with that.

Remasters have essentially zero cost. it's mostly AI and zero marketing. And automatic pre sales due to fans already knowing they want it. Only numbers I see were 16 million copies sold and it's old data.

It really isn't a good idea. Vanilla old XI was bad and needs to stay in the past where it belongs.

I want to make it clear that I very much align with your beliefs regarding 75 era retail.

I’m just saying that an official vanilla server seems (to me) to be sitting right on the table that SE is sitting at and they’re not grabbing it.

I could be wrong. I am not a tech guy - at all. But feasibility of it being a reality is within reality compared to a remaster.

And I know old FFXI was ***. I was there. I remember the old native movement speed, for example. They can keep our current movement speed in the vanilla server. They can keep shemo and shami to store seals in port jeuno. All the QoL adjustments that improved the game can come, except for the ones that changed its foundations and hurt the authenticity of it being a vanilla server(think: home point warps.)

I mean, I’d *** take it if it meant more subs to the game and it increases the chance of an actual expansion.

Alas… an expansion seems to be out of realities reach as well, regardless.

Even "requires a verified character to post" can't stop the god damn crypto bots apparently

I just want to know what the possible ROI for this could be that it justified the effort. Like, AH doesn't use a stock forum system, someone had to figure out how it worked, and decide the potential investment in time was worth it.

These spammers are obviously targeting XI players, and obtained these peoples login details for the website from some other database. If I had to guess, it's linked to Horizon somehow.

There is no way they are just shilling crypto, it's going to be a trojan or some other kind of attack to RMT their accounts and gil.

Maybe their passwords got compromised and sold somewhere.

I wouldn't be entirely shocked to find a private server owner doing the shadiest ***like that, nor the people using the same *** names and passwords.

A person with a 10 year old AH account is exactly the type of person playing on a private server, so it tracks.

I also wouldn't find it hard to believe if miners are slid into private server installs.

But therein lies the problem: who gets to decide which QOL to keep and which QOL to omit? Everyone has their own opinions. Some people would complain if it isn't exactly the same as it was. A lot of people tend to forget as well that a lot of the fixes over the years were to exploits. Do they keep those exploits as they were? Do they remove them? Is that "true to the vanilla experience" if they remove them? For example, I would argue that PlayOnline Viewer could be removed, but I've also seen people want me dead for suggesting that, because "PlayOnline Viewer was part of the experience".

That's why it would never work. No one would be happy.

If they started the game from scratch, they'd be better off instead learning from their mistakes and making a smoother experience from the get-go. Don't make it resemble a specific era, make it a completely new, yet familiar, experience.

That was what HorizonXI promised, and why so many people joined right away. But then they pulled crap like "monsters below level 10 don't drop items" and "you can't fish until you're level 15" that make no sense.

Cooking 110 get! Mwahahahaha! I crafted 48 Smoldering Salisbury Steaks with no breaks for 106 to 109 (and 10 Behemoth Steaks).

Then there was a stack of Behemoth Meat on the AH so... I splurged and made 12 more Behemoth Steaks!

I will admit that the PoL viewer was part of the experience, but it wasn't a positive part.

It is the main reason that I keep missing the return home campaigns.
