Random Thoughts.....What Are You Thinking?

Happy for their success! I only play it very casually for the FF elements, but the gameplay is not for me. Every game gets a big population boom before an expansion, hopefully they keep it fun enough to retain them. Maybe they could use some of their gains to help their other MMO! (not. lol)

Well, no company actually expects to retain the booms surrounding expansions/updates. Modern MMOs especially try to appeal to a wide variety of play styles, so it's just a matter of throwing multiple kinds of bait to either keep players on the hook and encourage the rest to come back periodically. They require heavy development teams and a crapload of hype to grow their player base.

XI is mostly in the diehards only stage of life. They can offer us less because we need less incentive to stay. XIV will get to that point eventually. Circle of life and all that.

I'm only speculating here, but the end life of both games will probably appeal to different groups. The XI remnants include many of the more hardcore players who multi-box and/or have endgame linkshells to tackle content. The XIV hardcore players will have less to shoot for once gear growth stops, so the remnants will likely be casuals who enjoy taking their time with the other aspects of the game since so much of that can just be soloed at any pace.

Yeah but its not fair, we all pay sub fees too and we should get stuff accordingly. We need that new expansion dammit! Time mage and chemist in 2022.

Think the main thing with this one is it isn't actually related to the expansion. That's still a few months out and returnees for endwalker won't start until September or so. All these players are coming from WoW dues largely in part to big wow community members like Bellular, Asmongold, and Jesse Cox making content for the game after they tried it due to WoW sucking eggs

I just wish they'd bring back the combo sub discount for XI. Paying $8/mo for xiv and then $13/mo for xi feels wrong

Some folks I know in a rural town are only getting about 2 Mbps download speed from their internet provider, yet they're paying (in the hundreds) for 25 Mbps down. You'd think they could pay for the 2 or have their internet upgraded to get 25. The provider says they're at the end of the street so all the internet is used up by the time it gets to them. I don't even know what to say to that.

My point is: I really wish it worked out so that if we aren't getting the service we're paying for with FFXI, it would be cool if we were paying for the service we're getting.

That makes the most sense. The expansion will bring all the ex-subs back to race through the story in a pay period and then they'll leave again. I'll say this about XIV: given my complete and utter disdain for WoW, I'm happy someone's finally killing it.

I'd be a lot more likely to sub to XIV if it meant I didn't have to tear my wallet away from one to make the other feasible. It's just so hard for my brain to justify subscribing to more than one game at a time.

That's why I wrote "more likely to". It's not like it's the only reason I'm not, but the limitations of the free trial are pretty unbelievable. I can't send /tells to friends? I can't reply to /tells I've received? I think there were a few other things that made no sense to me as well.

My 'friends' actually pushed me over the edge on the weekend. First time I got to see them in just short of a full year, and they spent most of the time trying to goad me into playing with them. I'm officially to the point where seeing the letters "XIV" automatically makes my blood boil, just like "WoW" did to me in high school.

I tried. People would send me messages when I would be looking for a party and the game would be like "Can't let you do that, Star Fox". I remember feeling particularly bad that people might think I was ignoring them.

When I inevitably find out that Nigel isn't voiced by Tim Curry, I'm going to be disappointed. Does look like they put some effort into this game, mind you.

Yeah, for an obvious Smash clone it doesn't look that bad on the surface. It's hilarious that it has rollback netcode and Smash doesn't, though.

I'm OK with games ripping off Smash. Smash is really easy to learn, easy to make a bunch of unique characters for, and easy to accommodate multiple players at once. I'm happy it's slowly becoming an entire genre itself. Especially since the original Smash Bros are probably going to take a long hiatus after Ultimate.

Day 1 progress. GPU removed and backplate taken off. There's 2 stripped screws on the mounting mechanism(thanks ncuckia), so I'm waiting for some goldsmithing dremel bits to arrive tomorrow to take those out. Also missing my last set of fans which was supposed to arrive 2 days ago.

Went on to install my Shtola bracket, gut everything (850w psu and CPU cooler especially) and cleaned the place up.

Then installed the new PSU (1000w t i t a n I u m) and slapped on the CPU block.

Now I'll flush the rads to make them usable for tomorrow then go to bed. Operating on the 3090 is going to be torturous and spike my blood pressure.

I never heard about that.

I always liked him, but I fell in love with his performance in Red Alert 3. Everyone looked like they were having so much fun doing the live-action cutscenes in that game.
